CV1 upgrade to Pimax 4K + PSMove / Kinect positional tracking

@crony - thanks but have seen this and checked, it is not a Piplay recenter but SteamVR recenter - which are not equal. Since Piplay resets the HMD gyroscope [ + a camera position to front again / PSMoveServices ], when the second only default view in application [ camera still remains drifted, so when using a positionalTracking - it simply needs a Pimax recenter ! ]

Does it cost anything?

PT ? yes, big investment  [ since you are here, I suppose you already have a Pimax4K ]

  • used PSMove controler & PS3Camera => 10$ [ but PSMove is needed only for first configuration / if you could borrow for a day then only camera = 5$ ]
  • driver with full licence - to have all further upgrades without time limit => 8E [ but works in demo mode up to 10 minutes = 0$ ]
  • a little PLA plastic for my 3Dprinter => couple of cents [ but a pingpong ball will be more then enough ]
  • a 12VLED => 1-2$
  • time

Ah, I was refering the the driver4Vr program. I might have to cancel my nolo order because it is taking them weeks from when they told me it would ship, and it seems as though ceiling mount support isnā€™t there yet for the pimax 4k.

I was wondering about the hollow plastic golf balls.

Also some have used the ping pong ball with ir led & sometimes with only half ping pong ball.

I like the solution as it has options and can be done with a pingpong ball [ or something round, probably golf ball, or a PSMove on HMD - better but heavier and inconvinant ] - do not requires a customized specific hardware [ that only one company produces which costs a lot, or is unavailable to purchase ], and I also like it because in general it works
[ problem with slight drift of gyroscope, but if it is realted to Pimax H/W - then OK, understand = no easy workaround -> then just having a shortcut / keyboard / controller button to ResetView [ PiPlay recenter ] is some kind of a solution, OK I can click from time to time [ but don`t need to pause, alt+tab -> Pimax -> click -> alt+tabl = back to APP ]

@pho3nix just to let you know, a PSMove controller is not needed to configure PSMoveService. It can all be with the virtualHMD (ping-pong ball, etc).

Iā€™m surprised you only use one camera. Do you not find it too jittery? I suppose the larger size of your 3D printed ball probably helps.

@cinkoxid PSMove controllers can definitely be used at the same time as the virtualHMD but I donā€™t know whatā€™s planned for the Leap Motion implementation. You probably wonā€™t be able to solely use a Leap Motion for simultaneous head and hand tracking but thatā€™s just an educated guess. However you can use a virtualHMD and the Leap Motion at the same time.

OK - thank you ! I was following [ by wire ] the @DaleyTech tutorial - so it doesn`t even require any PSMove controller with VirtualHMD to setup - so it is even much easier to SET UP !

Yes, one camera because I didn`t even know what will happen - will it even work or not [ not many informations online are available ] - but after I made it to cooperate - yes, could add another one, but still as a cockpit user [ as @Oculus uses one tracker in front ] for me to use 2-4 like in YT tutorial will be more problematic [ those wall-mounts in a small room ]. I suppose 2 PS3Camera in front corners could make all posisioning more precise ?

Yes that should improve the tracking. Itā€™ll also help prevent loss of tracking by occlusion.

OK - thanks ! I`ll add second PS3Camera in near future - since it can improve the trackingā€¦
@zelmon64 - PSMoveServices is a really nice SW, especially the VirtualHMD !
but still one thing remains: the HMD gyroscope orientation DRIFT - any suggestion ?

@pho3nix Iā€™m afraid thatā€™s down to the HMD and whether it has a magnetometer or not. If it does then it just needs a better calibration. If it doesnā€™t then the only option would be to try to incorporate one somehow or use something else entirely for the orientation. I donā€™t really know anything about the Pimax HMDs so I donā€™t know what to suggest.

so probably a PSMove on HMD [ using its sensors with disabled P4K sensors - hard to say if can be switched off / freepie injection for more axis should do the job ] may be better for driftā€¦ or some other controller, you think a kinect / leap - can manage to do both [ position with rotation ] ?
I also donā€™t know Pimax spec. about magnetometer, or is there recalibration somewhere hidden in SW [ as debug tool is in Chinese ]

I was having simmilar problem with Mobile Gyro on GearVR so I use EDtracker for rotational tracking and was much better than mobile Gyro sensors. Here is some video with similar hybrid EDtracker+IRclip.

thanks ! I agree that trackIR [ freetrack + IR ] could be a good alternative [ for position + rotational tracking ], but then how to setup this as a steamVR HMD with P4K ?
[ probably as using GearVR, or other Cardbox = VRidge is the solution for SteamVR, but as P4K cannot work as WIFI phone display in VRidgeā€¦ ? ]

No, my point is to show how it is possible. Opentrack have support for steamvr so basicaly if you setup your P4K and Pingpong as SteamVR pass it true Opentrack which will allow you to aditional fine tuning and to set up recenter key.

It is an idea to try buypass problem with third part tracking software. Opentrack is freeware so no expense at all.
Same goes for EDtracker whic is in assens arduino based and parts for it cost less than 10$ for most advanced gyro sensors and there is lot of tutorials and EDtracker software for precise callibration is free for DIY made EDtracker. So if it is work with IR clip same princip should be to made hybrid ā€œEDpingpongā€. Just giveing you ideas to try solve problem.
Iā€™m guesing Pimax dont have such advanced software for Gyro as EDtracker and that is reason why is drifting so much.

There is also possible to set up Pimax inside opentrack directly and than do it like in hybrid video only set up as directional source Pimax like rift 0,4ā€¦ I donā€™t know exactly this is the options and need to be tested. I believe some of tham should work if not all of them.
Not cost anything just time to play with it.

Yes, @wormeaten but do you have any video + tutorial [ step by step ] as a proof of concept [ or checked it and confirm that works ] that Pimax 4K in SteamVR uses this as a solution for PositionalTracking ? or just couple of small step videos [ one of EDtracker, another for something else = that combined together should make it possibleā€¦ but no one really did it [ maybe just couple of small issues is pending from monthsā€¦ ]? I would be glad to see.

OK Pho3nix all of my post here is product of my mind and some experiance in other field like DIY headtracking systems. Opentrack, NoIRfacetrack Freetrack production of IRclip or removing IR filters from PS3 Eye. I didnā€™t buy proper VR yet, experimenting with mobilephone and CardboardVR but tracking all the news on that field and as I learn on headtracking that TrackIR are not worth that 160$ when I could make my own for just few bucks.

Iā€™m encouriging you to try something I see somewhere else someone try already or combining some of my experiance which could work in that way. For example I notice SteamVR support as source in Opentrack so need to try.
With that PSmoveservice I donā€™t have personal experiance but found lot of videos where its working.
I found this guy and he is Polish like you so try to PM him. He got lot of experiance with it.

I could direct you with some links but need to be more specific I could help you with my research I already done or some experience.

Yes and about Gyro I believe it is just Pimax software issue to be better without drifting. So we need to make pressure on Devs.
