CPU Requirements? Does VR require a big jump in CPU or mainly just gfx card?

Hay all

My main question is that I do understand that a big jump in Gfx Card is needed for the Pimax 5k+ and VR in general, but what about CPU?

— Does the 5k+ and VR in general require a big jump in CPU power or is the taxing of CPU not jump up much at all when going from flat to VR for the CPU? —

Been offered an i7 8700, wondering if its enough when matched with a 1080ti which will be upgraded up n up in the future.

EDIT:- The main games I’ll be playing are Elite Dangerous and heavily gfx modded Skyrim.

Your cpu should be good. A pcbuilder friend (pro shop). Reccommends 6 cores for 4k gaming.

The 1080ti will be good but just don’t expect maxing demanding titles.

I have Ryzen 7 2700x 16g ddr4 3600mhz (general rec on Ram 3000mhz) with zotac 1080ti mini

I can’t speak on ED settings. But a few hereare ED players.

@fresco can give you some great details on SkyrimVR

The gfx card will be an EVGA FTW3 1080ti although theres no big diff between 1080tis it is the fastest I could find, just not water cooled.

Which Intel i7 does yours equate to? not big on AMD comparisons, always used Intel.

Thx for your great reply man!

It seems your i7 8700k is similar in Game performance to my r7 2700x according to Techspot.

Also compares to the i7-9700k

General rule is that 8700 (6 cores I think) for single core processing is about 10% faster (4.7GHz vs 4.3GHz) than Ryzen 7 2700x (8 cores), but the difference is becoming less in multi core scenarios where Ryzen 7 outperformes 8700. For gaming 8700 is a bit faster, but I’m not sure the difference is that much noticeable. It also depends on the MB performance, how fast you can run the memory, number of M2 HDDs etc. For me AMD platform (X470 or X370) is more flexible for general OC comparing to INTEL.

Personally I don’t really want to jump off my trusted X79/LGA2011 platform, but it’s becoming obsolete for VR considering number of PCI-E available on it and Pimax requirements. Still not convinced that it’ll be much difference, but started to move to AMD X470/2700x/3200 OC memory + RTX 2080. anything else like THREADRIPPER platform or quad channel i9 systems are out of my reach at the moment :frowning:

Mostly gpu because of the resolution. Many tests show that once you get above 1080p, things become more and more gpu bound and cpu matters less.

I run 3 cores (4th reserved) on a 7600k and can hit 70-80 fps on a 5k+. 6 cores should be fine

which game? what sorta gfx settings and which gfx card?

Cheers man

Space Pirate Trainer, generally messing around in the SteamHome.
Sairento was more like 65-70 for most levels.
Right now I’m pretty much just running the stock settings, 1x PiPlay, 1x SteamSS.

Just got mine last weekend so I’m hoping I might have some more time to actually optimize and tweak this weekend (as well as play ) .

ya on a 1080ti I’m assuming then too?

yup, i thought i’d mentioned that but I guess my brain’s a bit sleepy.

I went with the EVGA Hybrid 1080ti. I spoiled myself this generation.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-9700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-8700K/4030vs3937
The i7 8700k has 6-cores and 12-threads and is 3.6ghz with max boost of 4.7ghz.
and the i7 9700k has 8-cores and 8-threads and is 3.6ghz with a max boost of 4.9ghz.

And the price difference is just £4.99 with an effective gain of only 5% and 3% user benchmark.

Which is preferred in VR?, are threads important? or more cores?

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8700K-vs-Intel-Core-i9-9900K/3937vs4028
Also I’ve read the new i9s run super hot! like 100 degrees hot! and the gain of the i9 9900k over the i7 8700k is only 14% effective speed and 20% user benchmark.
But as I said, run super hot plus a big hike in price of £110 so thats a no then.

@asonkin65 @Heliosurge

Simple Truth Cores more than threads but for 4k gaming at high refresh my Pro Builder Said 6 cores is what you want.

As for threads as in virtual cores (hyper threading & the like) depends on the game. Sometimes this slows things down.

Yes it seems intel is taking the lead of late with space heaters as the i7 8700k runs quite hot as well.

I’m building solely for VR… MAJOR VR Addict since I got a PSVR and itching for FOV as the current FOV in headsets (used Vive too) just annoys me the whole time I’m playing any/all VR games.

So the 9700k would be the better option it sounds? 5 quid more so no biggie.

Could be one of those A/B comparison times and as you say, depends on game… Mainly Skyrim and Elite for me but I’m one of these people that says a good game is a good game regardless of type/theme/style etc but cockpit games are pretty damned fun if done well so thats a CPU intensive game type same with large open world games I’ve read.

Thumper and Polybius will be wicked with a proper FOV  real Psychedelic zone your head out stuff when it covers the peripherals too

I’ll bet. I’ve been waiting for it to be released for the PC. I didn’t even know they were planning a VR version. That is awesome news!

I did a search for it a few months ago (yet again) and didn’t find it. I just bought it off Steam. I’ve been wanting to play it ever since Nine Inch Nails used it in their Less Than music video. If you’ve never seen the video, you should watch it… The girl is hot, even though she’s just staring at the screen all glassy-eyed…

Excellent! Minter deserves the support!

They’ve released a few of their other games in VR too now, including Goat Up! :open_mouth: hahahah
