There is a lot of discussion on which is better for controllers, thumbsticks or trackpads and even if maybe there should be one on left hand and the other on the right hand etc.
But wouldn’t the best choice be to simply combine them?
Microsoft already does this for their windows MR platform.
looking at the designs, it appears they are identical and that a pop out circular panel will allow them to switch the design between the two modes in production, which is cost efficient.
Having both on the top sounds great but will require full redesign, not sure if they will go there, and be able to keep the 2 buttons on that face as per valve design spec.
I would note looking at the controllers that i wouldnt mind seeing concept art of the underside. It looks like it has 2 cap sense and maybe 2 triggers? rather than valves 3 caps sense 1 trigger.
If decide to do like this, please make 2 prototype, swap position between track pad and stick to compare the comfortable of using track pad because I think it have to use bigger area more than stick. thanks.
To be honest I have a rift ans I really like thumbstick but if you look now all companies tend to switch to trackpad and even oculus with the Santa Cruz headset will switch to trackpad.
So I’m not sure at all that having both will be good for the weight and ergonomic because if you tried the occulus touch or knuckles it’s super nice to have small weight, ergonomic controller that’s so so natural…
And this Ms controllers are way behind to ergonomic point of view.
Other idea on kick starter, I think like this too, make stick to be module.
Or we make the track pad and stick to be a module part which can be swapable, not sure about technical.
You can divide the trackpad into 4 buttons on each corner depending on where you hit it. The thumbstick is only one button, like the dualshock analog stick.
