I’ve been asking on the kickstarter and apparently it’s a stupid question, but I need someone from the Pimax team to clarify for me. How will existing VIVE controllers interact wirelessly with the Pimax 8K? Does the Pimax 8K have built in bluetooth for communication with the controllers/base stations or something? Or are we going to need to purchase separate (USB) dongles in order to connect our existing VIVE accessories. This should be extremely simple to answer at this stage in development, all I want is some clarification that I don’t have to go drop an extra $100 after purchasing just the HMD.
I am not looking for speculation on how you think this might work, I am looking for a direct answer from a Pimax employee (preferably one of the developers).
Thanks in advance, I do have great hope for this headset but the fact that it’s been so difficult to get an answer to this seemingly simple question is a bit off-putting.
Vive controllers use a dongle like steam controllers not bluetooth from my undestanding. @SweViver can clarify on this.
@deletedpimaxrep1@Matthew.Xu@bacon will the kickstarter headset have valve dongle built in for wireless connectivity? Or will vive users need to obtain dongle?
Yep, that’s exactly what I’m wondering. According to one user on the kickstarter:
“The controllers connect to the watchman chip inside the Pimax8K just as they would for a Vive or any other Lighthouse based tracking solution.”
I hope this is the case.
Edit: and ya, I don’t know much about the inner workings of the VIVE, so I just assumed it was bluetooth. But ya, you got the point of my question which is what’s important lol.
Pimax, HTC, Oculus, and many other VR companies are use dongle, not bluetooth.
You don’t need to buy other connection devices, Pimax 5k/8k headset compatible with Vive controllers and base stations.
Where did you ever get the idea that you need to use a dongle using Vive controllers??? I have never seen a post from Pimax saying this! Can you direct me to this information . I think your wrong.
I believe a bluetooth dongle (or build-in bluetooth on your motherboard) is being used with the Vive, but its being used to automatically start up and shut down the lighthouses when opening and closing SteamVR. This dongle was not provided by HTC.
The current Pimax prototype units require a Steam dongle for each controller to use the controllers wirelessly because the dongle built into the Vive headset is not present in the current prototype Pimax headsets. Based on Matthew’s response, the shipped headset will not require those separate dongles. Am I understanding that correctly?
The Vive shipped dongles with early release & you can buy dongles for them. The headset like the steamlink has a dongle built in. Really though we should say Valve’s controllers. HTC built the Vive with Valve’s help to be steam compatable.
