I think he said he had his contact lenses in but you could be right. It’s a bit similar when people say a headset is so comfy and then you see them adjust it every 5 seconds.
But there is so much adjustments to make maybe Marks meant he needed more time to set the diopter, eye relief, tilt and where it rests on the head before making any definitive observation.
I can see this being Sebastian’s daily driver unless Valve pull something special out of the hat.
And it’s £1600 including tax and shipping which isn’t bad although I think all HMDs should under £1000 to sell in volume.
Pimax may ship a Super to him, but that doesn‘t mean it‘s ready. Pimax have shipped supposedly ready for release headsets to youtubers before which then effectively acted as alpha-/beta-testers, giving Pimax valuable feedback while making them emotionally attached to the development & refinement process so when the device finally was ready for commercial release, they could hope that the youtubers would feel sympathetic to the device and give it a relatively positive review as it had turned just a little bit into their own „baby“. Bigscreen also did this quite extensively with their Beyond.
I used the Crystal super quite a bit over CES, and it’s very close to ready. Literally all that was is needed for me to use it full time is just improve the distortion profile a bit which already happened on Day 2 of CES. The brightness and clarity blows away anything else I have seen, it was actually pretty shocking to go back to the Crystal light.
I think the idea that it’s months away from being ready is absurd tbh. The eye tracking was working fine btw, it just wasn’t enabled for the public demos as the auto-ipd was off but I never use that anyway. Doing the eye tracking calibration and testing it there, it was working fine for me.
It’s just improve the distortion profile (which was already totally usable from day 2 tbh), and get auto-ipd tuned in. Mura is on a panel by panel basis, one of the units had no mura and another had quite severe mura, this is the same as PSVR2. I’m not sure what else isn’t ready tbh, and I certainly don’t see why it would take months to be ready.
I like it a lot, I will be getting one when I can but mostly for VR dev stuff. The brightness and FOV make it an inferior choice for gaming for me personally but it’s still a fantastic headset. I did find it pretty unstable on my head tbh, I couldn’t get the strap to sit right but I’m sure with some more tinkering at home, and the usually modding that I have done with literally every headset ever, then it will be fine. I have very fine/silky hair so soft straps really struggle to grip onto my head.
It’s a very good headset though, colours look great, OLED is lovely of course, the size and weight are nice (although personally the impact of it is massively over stated and I don’t find a huge comfort difference between it and say a quest 3). For dev stuff, with the flip-up design, native steamVR etc, it seems like a dream device but for gaming I definitely want a larger FOV and better brightness (although I heard the brightness will be improved at launch).
I think if it checks off a lot of boxes for you then you will be happy, although personally I think I had too high of expectations for it (mostly due to youtubers to be honest) so I ended up a bit underwhelmed when I did get trying it. Also Shiftall only let me try it in environments that were clearly selected to minimise glare, so that was a bit concerning but I can’t blame anyone trying to give their product the best impression they can and I could already tell the glare is better than Valve index for example.
I was very very surprised by the Play for dream. Their PC streaming (no native connection) was also surprisingly good.
My main concern is how 1:1 the rip off off apple is. I don’t think they will actually be able to release in the west, but who knows maybe they will fly under the radar. I heard rumours of getting AndroidXR on it in which case it would be a great device.
The only issue I had with it was the controller tracking needs some work still, but like considering it has ringless controllers that are already tracking relatively okay is very impressive as is. The lenses were very nice also. It’s a very interesting headset and seems well done. If it had a native DP connection I would probably be all over it, but as it stands I’ll wait to see what AndroidXR devices come out and I have the Quest 3 to keep me ticking over in terms of spatial computing needs for now.
I assume I tried the brighter version then, as I tried it at the same time as this video. The headset wasn’t painfully dim or anything, I would say Quest 3 level which is very usable but for me personally brightness is super important (I would say much more than the average person, so counterbalance my opinion with that).
Honestly, 2025 looks like a great year for VR hardware and I think there’s something out there to cater for everyone pretty much. We’re in a good position of it being “Which suits you best?” Opposed to previous years of “Which is the least amount of trade-offs for you?”. Personally, the crystal super is the headset I want but I can 100% understand and see why someone would go for the Meganex, Quest 3, Visor, Play for Dream etc etc instead. It’s a good place to be where there are many valid choices.
Definitely! Also the fact that current headsets are pretty good already makes things just way more relaxed in general. Before, I could get really frustrated about Pimax f*cking things up because that would mean I would still not have good VR, still staring at pixels, distortion etc. Now I don’t mind too much, happy with my AVP. If anything even better comes along this year, great, if not, fine too.
I have not seen anybody mention the 50 PPD module, so I do not believe it was being demoed. So we will have to wait to learn if it is worthwhile or not. It would be the biggest reason for me to choose the Crystal Super over devices like the MeganeX 8K or others.
On the Play for Dream I will wait until it becomes available in Europe via proper channels and then let’s see what the deal is. It is nice that it can mimick the AVP but it needs to perform the full PCVR job for me to be a contender. Too much money for a mere gimmick or service risk if not sold officially in my country.
I am pretty certain it was clarified as the 57ppd version as it was said to be around the advertised 120wide. And was confirmed to be around the advertised 120w by Seb & Mark using testing hmd.
The 50ppd is aiming for 135wide and was not at CES from what I recall
Added a space between your text and the YouTube link so it displays correctly.
I agree and have thought so from the beginning that 200wide is a waste to aim for. 170 to 180 max as tally said 220 is max and majority of ppl will not have 220.
Very thorough evaluation considering being at CES and given more time then usually able. Very valid points made.
