CES 2018 - 8K Prototype details

Hi. Backer 2870 here. Backed the 8K X and chose to receive an 8K unit and return it later on, so I guess I might as well volunteer to get an early one to give feedback and spread the word. I’d suggest to send the early 8K units to mostly 8K X backers, because they wouldn’t be frustrated if their units felt unfinished or subpar. They’ll get their backed 8K X model regardless.

Btw, regarding that VoodooDE guy above me I can honestly tell you that there’s just not any other content creator in Germany dedicated solely to VR. His channel even has less of a fanbase than mine, which I wouldn’t call successful at all. So yeah, the “most successful” German VR channel is outplayed by pretty much any mediocre German Youtuber. :stuck_out_tongue:

Kind regards
Axido

Hi Thoms

Xunshu will be doing a vote for the best group of people to beta test the first batch. I’ll put you on my list for sure. Cheers

I agree truth if you truly wanted to guage a youtube channel imho you would need to maybe use a baseline like this.

Language Estimated population of target audience. Viewers divided by Estimated language population.

So the German youtube channel could end up with more viewers vs many or all English base channels. At least going with % of potenial viewers in a native tongue.

Thomas is not a pro speaker (horrible pronunciation of english terms) and not much of an in-depth tec guy for sure, but he is very humble and sympathic, motivating a lot of people with his oozing love for VR in Germany. (which is stil a niche at least compared to other youtube content) That‘s what I like about him and he should be proud of. I really enjoy his stuff, like to hear what he is gonna say about the first batch.

Thanks for the nice words guys.
I know that it is VERY hard to be successful with a German only VR channel. Germans are hard to convince to spend hundreds of euros in a new technique, but I think I really do my best! I spend around 4-5 hours a day to get people into VR.
Having nearly 4000 subs for a german VR channel is not easy, but there is no other extremely active VR channel with nearly as much subs.
I know I can’t compete with English speaking channels with hundreds of thousands of subs, but well, we will see what future brings.
People in Germany love my work and it’s nearly the only source for German gameplay, unboxing, VR hardware and VR weekly news.
So I hope you will vote for me and we can get a “Pre-Pimax” for the German VR community.

Isn’t it another shoddy article from uploadVR? In my understanding Q2 was never mentioned as a release date for the 8k, only for the 8k x (which was already scheduled to release after May.). Updated ETA for the 8k is still to be announced.

It was mentioned by @deletedpimaxrep1 that current projection for 8k would be delayed til March while they evaluate possibly new hardware(to help ensure quality release). But are going to maybe release a small batch of headsets to help testing.

The Article is mainly just reporting on what was reported here in the Forum. Kevin @ Tom’s Hardware released an article on this & RoadtoVR has as well. Just looks like UploadVR is jist catching up with their Article’s release.

@deletedpimaxrep1 wrote they will make a decision about the refresh rate in March, still there’s no news on the updated release date (it will obviously be after March, but it’s to be announced later in January, and it is not clear if there will be an option for (early?) backers to get the current HMD earlier). Also, I don’t know where they get this: “Q2 appears to be the estimation for only the first batch of units right now”.

Will all backers vote on that?

It would most likely be a vote on this forum and the 8k vr facebook page. Just like they did for other nominations

But dont take my word for it

Hi Thomas, I can confirm that your channel is popular in the VR community in Germany, and it actually was your hands-on of the 8K which gave me the last push to seriously check out the 8K at the time and I then decided to drive all the way to the VR Days in Amsterdam to get my hands on it for myself. Well, now I am an 8K and 8K(X) backer…

@Matthew.Xu: I fully support the suggestion to hand over an 8K sample to Thomas for a review on his Youtube channel ! He in general is positive, not looking to find the tiniest flaws to feast on them, but a VR nerd who just enjoys the technology and gives his honest views from a VR user perspective.
As many have suggested before, the other two who come to my mind would be @SweViver and Linus, and of course Tested.

@Matthew.Xu, @bacon:

To represent the Spanish-speaking community, so big, I would like to propose the web in which I participate, Real or Virtual, to review one of the firsts Pimax 8K; the web was born and maintained by enthusiastic fans like me and that, nevertheless, has come to be the most visited in Spanish, fully specialized in virtual and augmented reality and independent of any economic interest. Among our members we have professionals in virtual reality, game developers, audiovisual media and artists. We do interviews, comment and analyze in depth any subject of both hardware (as the Adhawk, which I mentioned to Pimax) and software.
Three people from the web, including me, were going to interview Pimax in Barcelona (Spain); pity that it could not be, because of the political instability of the moment.
Nevertheless, our collaborator, “OMG”, was able to interview them in New York and try the Prototype 3 of the Pimax 8K; because of this, we both became backers, like dozens of other users.

Did I mention that Juanlo, the creator of Real or Virtual is also backer of the Pimax 8K?

Another person that I would like to propose is the well known divulger of the RV in Spanish, “Jugon Virtual”, that being a producer and game designer of the studio that won the PlayStation Talens award in 2016, Tessera Studios with its “Intruders: Hide and Seek”, game for PlayStation VR, decided to dedicate to its channel on virtual reality, Jugon Virtual, with which very enthusiastically follows, with his partner Caty, all the hardware and software developments for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Pimax 4K. They also won the prize to the best RV divulgers of 2017 in Spain.
I coincided with him while we both did interviews in the past Barcelona Games World 2017.
He organizes events and conferences such as the “VR Gamer Spain”, and also virtual reality eSports competitions, the “VR League”.
Jugón Virtual also speaks perfectly both English and French, as well as Spanish, and would subtitle his videos.

I would also like to recommend @Alehandoro, that although does not have many users on his Youtube channel, because he has just created it, is very consulted for his high technical knowledge on hardware. Some users told me that he was one of the first and main promoters of the Pimax 4K in Spain, dedicated to answering questions and solve problems of the first users about the Pimax 4K, of which he did help tutorials; I know him more as one of those in charge of analyzing hardware and software in Real or Virtual, so he would not be a bad candidate either; users are very confident in their critical, but fair, analyzes.

Tested would be my choice to get a beta unit. They are very fair and make awesome video content (and have a lot of followers)
