Best quality settings for STEAMVR ive found

I thought so also, but just changing the value of 0.300000000000000111999 +what ever to 0.25 also has the same effect for me - on start up it changes that again (supersampleScale).

Just my 5 cents maybe Steamvr autotunes it by the gpu speed which vary a bit every time. Theres an autodetect gpu speed setting in, if I remember correctly, under the steamvr/settings/developer options.

That sounds reasonable!
I will set that to 3000 and I think there was an option for detecting gpu speed - but haven’t touched that before…
Maybe that will do the magic.
But is the Steam\config Settings permanent for you all? Maybe it’s just the supersampleScale that is Autotuned, since after the first try’s I just reduced it to that as a change and maybe had the wrong quotation marks also. As stated above.

Personally I don’t know since I have never messed up with those config files. I can check tonight to see if the values change.

I just checked it.
It is like you said. It starts detecting GPU Speeds - adds them up and does the average on each start. It’s rewriting my config in E:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config each time.
That taken into account is used to set the ā€œsupersampleScaleā€ : 0.30000001192092896 as an example
This is also visible in the menus right here:
grafik
I can fool it into thinking better but each start does an average and goes near to what it believes is the value for my GPU (2080TI).

Even though its the path where I should be editing my config

Edit: If you open the config file with a good editor (that auto updates) then you can see the slider in steam live changing the values in the config file.

Do you have the ā€œauto-adjustā€ feature enabled? From the screenshot it looks it is disabled (Benutzerdefinierte Auflƶsung aktivirien), or did you just disabled it to get the readings? If you want to set the SS factor to the fixed value, you need to disable it and set it manually.

If you have slow gfx u can try set SteamVR ss 11.111111111% (0.1111111111111 in config file)
Its will give you 3x3 pixel patterns (instead 2x2) but u can use higher Pitool SS in this case, and this means bit less artefacts.

4x4 patterns - 6.25% SteamSS (0.0625 in config) for VERY slow gfx. And may be blury enough.

It’s a 2080TI from EVGA FTW in The ATMs of a i9900k - should not be lower end.

@risa2000 if I uncheck that box, then I don’t have an option to set the values - so checking enables setting it by hand in the steam many and I thought that would be correct? Do I need to uncheck and then set it in the config?

( it says above that steam will Serbia automatically and then the checkbox seems to opt in on manually setting it. None the less having it checked resets the value each startup as it queries the GPU speed and the adjusts accordingly the Supersampling.

You should have it checked, and set the value manually. If SteamVR rewrites the file even then, then I would expect that this file does not actually apply.

That seems to be the case.
It’s checked - moving the slider Alters the config immediately. But it does Alter does values every start up. I noticed because on first try my resolution was equal to the examples mentioned above for 5k but changed.

That’s why I tried all possibilities- only the ā€ždon’t editā€œ default file keeps its values. I thought I had noticed this before and only the one in the user appdata file would do the job - but there is no config and it’s not mentioned by the vrpathreg.exe file

Hey good news Steam works, sorry about that - I’ve only copied-pasted settings from Gared’s original post into my SteamVR config, and from there into the forum - no additional quote characters added by me.

Might be text encoding / formatting change / UK keyboard when added to the forum page, ideally would be better for copied config details to remain in plain text format :+1:

Hmmm I’ll check if my user config settings have changed tonight

Yes @sweviver said something before about Gpu profiling in Steam

I been playing around with this values and yes, the difference is huge, in my case for the steamvr.vrsettings; I paste all the config with the settings posted by Gared and calculating by myself when you change Pitools PP on and Off. Very important to stop steam to reconfig (reset) your steamvr.vrsettings is putting READ ONLY and that solve the problem. Thanks Gared for this trick, I been messing around with 0.50 Scaled and it is really cool if you GFX card support it. :sunglasses:

Yes the steamvr.vrsettings file in the config folder has been reset :frowning: Have not tried the setup again since last post, so may well be blanked on Steam launch?

I’m going to put the settings back and set just the file to read-only. Making the entire config folder read only seems like a bad idea with all the other files in there.

I’m also wondering if simply adding the Read Only attribute would help. Might need to adjust the security tab instead, because if Steam apps execute with System privileges then it might be ignored. I’ll have a look around, others must have encountered this

OK I believed it blanked because I found a syntax error I put in with the last edit, my bad. After careful checking I’m hopeful it will not repeat - no manual changes to the file properties for now, which I would always prefer to avoid

If ur setting file reset every time - it mean syntax error or invalid parameters. If u set read only setting will NOT WORK anyway.
The only parameter that is overwritten by itself is gpu speed testing related. If your file is written correctly, it will never change if you did not touch the settings during the session.

PS:If you write down a parameter in your file, the same as specified in the default config, then this parameter will be deleted as useless (duplicate default). If you do not want something like this to happen - just set read only. But make sure everything is spelled correctly and the file is not reset.

I might have already said this in this post but when I see you guys talking about this…
Its been a year, A YEAR (8k received 22d oct 2018 and my settings are displayed in all my videos description) than I am using those kind of settings and most ppl was like ā€œwtf, is he blind?ā€ and I first used my 8k with a 1060gtx6Go with those settings of course.
And with all the drama about 5k+ vs 8k and stuff and I was like "guys, how do you know who use good settings, SS doesnt make it all’.

All fine today since correcting a mistake - I had missed a comma at the end of a line.

Thanks to your suggestions, and also to @neal_white_iii for inspiring me to completely reset my setup for comfort. I had a long session with excellent performance, decent visuals, and far less blurry eye / eyestrain requiring me to constantly fiddle with the headset position.

Still need that MAS and CK, but far more bearable while I’m waiting thx :+1: :+1: :+1:
