Aspect Ratio Pimax 5k+ in SteamVR

I just want to ask a stupid question:
The Pimax 5k has a resolution of 2560x1440 ie an aspect ratio of 16: 9. Why on the other hand in steamVR does the SS regulation show a 4: 3 resolution (or even 3: 2)? Even if you set SS in SteamVR with the closest resolution to Pimax which is 64% we will have 2560x2100 so with an incorrect aspect ratio and a greater waste of resources to calculate 5.376.00 pixels (2560x2100) instead of 3.686.400 (2560x1440) … Am I wrong about something or am I not aware of the real functioning?
Thank you

I am also interested in this. If you set the aspect ratio correctly you get less jaggies

Because the VR application does not render the image at the physical resolution of the panels, but at “suggested” resolution, which takes into account the supersampling factor and the aspect ratio for the transformation needed. For Pimax in particular the resolution at which the image is rendered depends on several factors:

  • FOV setting in PiTool (Small, Normal, Large)
  • Parallel projection on or off
  • PiTool “Rendering Quality setting”.

The final image is always smaller than the physical panel res, because there is a need for a horizontal margin to cover the image repositioning for the different IPD.

In short, the physical panel resolution has no direct relation to the resolution at which the image is rendered by the application.
