Anyone sticking with the 8k?

I think what we also have to bear in mind that quite a number of the Berlin attendees said they preferred the 8K.

I think also to get a better compare need to have color warm & brightness(lux) match & such.

As some of these settings being different will appeal to different folks by what they see.

Don’t forget eye tracking and foviated rendering, that could give a good performance boost as with Star VR.

i dont know what to choose yet.

Pimax 8k seems to have more positive things, better contrast, blacks and colors, no color banding and no dot patterns,

but pimax 5k has only less jagged edges and clearity. the two things makes so much difference to make us change from 8k to 5k+?

+1 : i pre ordered a 2080 Ti. I’m eagerly waiting for @sweviver tests with the 8K. If the benchmarks and confort is there, i’ll stick to 8K, otherwise i’ll pick the 5K+

I keep going back and forth. Two things that bother me:

  1. by the time the hardware allows us to push the 8k, the panels will have upgraded significantly as well! I’d rather an 8k with upgraded video screens.
  2. the 8k does NOT accept an 8k input so when we can push the hardware, I’m going to be looking at the 8kX!
Also, readability is important to me now.
Obviously, I’m hoping to get some RTX reviews with the Pimax before I have to make up my mind.

I’ve addressed that here: http://community.openmr.ai/t/dear-reviewers-i-still-have-some-questions/8286/3

And in the live AMA last night with MRTV directly, video link is there too.

Before seeing the reviews I also thought I will stick with the 8K. But now I’m quite confident that I will switch to the 5K+ and I’m very thankful to Pimax for providing this option.

After the reviews I don’t see the point of the 8K any more, since the 5K+ does the job on the same level or even better, but is simpler. The upscaler trick seems not to work as intended. The image quality is not improved, the SDE is already quite low on the 5K+.

The next big thing should be the 8KX together with foveated rendering. I think Pimax will experience trouble with selling the 8K because the 5K+ will simply steal the show.

And only on old games, since new games will always be demanding.

I am really curious how the 8K(X) will pan out. Either they just want to get over it and ship it out, then it will be exactly as advertised, rip out the upscalers, plug in two cables & bridge chips and off you go.
A limited application device for watching movies or using your desktop in VR due to being really sharp, if no greater demand is directed at the GPU. Play meaningful games ? Don’t think so, would end up being a slide show with 13 FPS. Or just won’t even start. But you couldn’t really blame Pimax for it, that’s what you asked for and what you get.

Or they actually do the Plus thing - look at the opportunity, and where to go from the 8K. But honestly, without Foveated Rendering coming alive and a proper eye-tracking solution (be it the one they’ll offer us for the 8K/5K+ or not) I do not see how we could hope to really put the 8K(X) to greater use until 2022 when the GPUs may have caught up.

So it will perhaps end up as a tech demo ahead of its time, which will be made obsolete by the time it could be utilized properly.

Will probably stick with 8k. I will be waiting for the complete package with basestations and controllers anyway because i don’t have a Vive kit. By the time i get all of this next summer, i’ll be able to sell my 1080Ti and get a next gen AMD card that could beat the 2080Ti.

it’s all a waiting game now.

Future proof is a non excisting thing when it comes down to computing. What you buy now, has to function the way you want. Upgrading a pc component never was satisfactory without upgrading many other parts. Everything has to match in a way that the new cpu or gpu or memory is fully taken advantage of. Same goes for your screen.

I’d not bet too much on waiting for the testers to get the RTX 2080ti as its delayed a week after launch and they started to send out surveys this morning. Only a few lower backers got them so depending on your number you may or not make the cut off date for choosing.

@TheHolyOne
I’m afraid I’d lose a lot of money on this deal. So I will endure the time with the 8k until brainwarp or something like that comes along.

8K loaner to 8K X, nothing has changed except for the fact that the 8K X may be unusable for anything strenuous and may get replaced before it has a time to shine.

backer 6000+ here, i have some time

@deletedpimaxrep1 Are there 5K+ ready to ship for the first batch of backers? I am #32 and am thinking about switching.

Backer #6 and have just been through 24hours of major head scratching to make a quick decision (first world problems! lol)… I’ve just responded to pimax shipping email and decided to switch to the 5K+ and get the hand tracker too.

I had decided on 8K a few times today but overall I feel as a general VR user who plays anything, the 5K+ seems to be the best fit for now.

I think the 8K has potential still but as an 8K+ or if the 8KX with a better design than first proposed. Without the current upscaler limitations. If/When that happens I can decide if to sell the 5K+ then and get the next best HMD.

Yeah this is not easy… Do you think they will ship the 5K+ within the same timetable?

Nothing said to indicate otherwise, we know they are making both HMD’s now but only pimax knows quantities in the batches, for all we know they are making more 5K+'s than 8K’s…
