I have an Asus ROG g751jy laptop that runs the pimax 4k beautifully but have issues with the 8k.
Gtx 980. Requires a mini display port to display port adapter. First one I tried piplay did not detect the headset. Bought a Startech MDP2DPMF6IN adapter and piplay picks it up fine, but no display on headset and light stays red.
Skyrim vr opens and movement is detected but still no display, only on the laptop screen.
Was wondering if anyone got through similar issues or if there was a certain brand if adapter I need. The Startech is display port 1.2 compatible
Laptop I believe is rated displayport 1.2.
Have tried pitool standard and beta, have latest drivers. Lowest htz rating and minimal resolution tried.
Thanks for any help
Maybe smart smoothing will help.
Voodoo was able to do some gaming with a 1050ti on a desktop with the 8k.
Somebody also reported a conflict with piplay usb drivers once.(malfunction but not performance)

Just to mention it, lighthouse tracking should be disabled

Will do another full removal of all pimax software and reinstall pitool, maybe do a reinstall of windows.
Will try what I can before I buy another laptop
Sweviver has a video on 8k laptop gaming with a 1070 without brainwarp, which is about 30% better than twice as fast as a 980m

May just go for a 2080ti laptop, but Asus don’t make one with a displayport. Only mini.
Can anyone confirm a mini displayport adapter will be ok or should I have native large display port?
Mini DP works. I recently purchased ASUS ROG laptop with mini DP and 2080. Have no issue using it with my 5k+.

What brand of adapter cable are you using?
You could try if a firmware upgrade helps. Although I haven’t read that anyone else with a 9XX card needed it.
The tool states that it is for preventing freezes/blanks screens on boot, but on an off chance you could give it a try since it enables some DP features.
Note: My 1080 required the update today, but no problems with the 5K ever. The 980 being one generation behind, might benefit more.

@mojojojo nVidia FW upgrade don’t work on laptops.
@Mikenz666 it looks like your laptop have a GTX 980m which does not do direct mode that is required by the 8k. That’s why you don’t get a display, you’d have the same problem with a Rift or a Vive.
I have a Clevo P870DM with GTX 980 (desktop) with mini DP to DP adapter, took the cheapest one Amazon and my 8k is working well.

Ah ok, that’s a shame as the pimax 4k worked so well on it
Will do an upgrade to a newer laptop by the looks of it.
Thanks
Thanks for the info.
When it comes to Vive & Rift people are actually reporting success with using the displayport.
Performance wise there isn’t much to expect, the GPU is only 30% better than the 1050ti tested here, of course all the other components are worse than the desktop.

Interesting, I didn’t know that it was possible to disable direct mode in SteamVR. So @Mikenz666 it’s something you may take a look at!

Using mDP port is often stated as the secret sauce to solving the problem with the Vive, so not much help.
What I am wondering is if @Mikenz666 can see the grid lines with only SteamVR running, which would mean it’s at least somewhat working.
Thanks, I will read up on these and report back
Used the Pimax 8K on a Gigabyte Aero 15X. Il2 and Assetto Corsa with a mini DP to DP adapter. CPU is a i7700HQ and GPU was a 1070 Max-Q. It was usable but, I would have the 1070 Max-Q as a minimum and if looking at todays gaming Laptops - I would be looking at a HK or K based CPU.
I now run the Aero 15X with a eGPU RTX2080. I does better and I think the more powerful cpu’s on todays laptops with an eGPU would be the ticket. Why? Thermal Throttling that’s why. With the laptops CPU and GPU internally running you will be running temps up into the 90C mark which will then introduce GPU and or CPU throttling. By buying a laptop with a mid range GPU but top end CPU and then using a eGPU - the laptop will run with the eGPU much cooler in the 60C mark and thus not suffer throttling issues that plague high end gaming laptops.
That is if you want portability. If not - just build a desktop which will be much cheaper and not suffer the laptop issues.
My i7700HQ runs at 3.6Ghz which isn’t enough and then the mem is only running 2667Mhz which again is not fast enough. Such is the portable life.

Am looking at either a 1080 or 2080 laptop, I do have a powerful PC but travel alot.
Possibly the Asus ROG G703GI
It doesn’t have to be high graphics, just something that can fill my vr addiction.
They do make a dual 1080ti laptop with external water-cooled gpu’s but is a bit large
The 2080 G703GX is a bit expensive
See if you can get something with an Inter i9 9980HK or similar.
Gigabyte AERO 15 Classic-YA
It’s the single thread speed that counts and it is paired with a 1660 GTX. Might not be as expensive as the RTX models. Ram is still limited speed wise.
Problem with laptops is size, thermals and price for package. You pay through the nose for the portability. For me - I’m not sure what I’ll do but have thought about having cases at my 2 locations and then just taking internals with me for the desktop.

Traveling with PC parts is a good idea but I’m living out if motel.
There isn’t too much difference between 1080 and 2080 laptop gpu’s?

Would this be recommend? It’s 8th gen i9 and have one locally for a good price. Good cooling on these as it’s not intentionally compact

You’re comparing 2080 max-Q to 1080 non-max-Q, there are laptops with 2080 “desktop” too:
