AMD Zen3 5000 Series CPU Discussion

yeah, refresh, click buy, site crash, sold out. it’s like rtx 30 flashbacks.

Which reminds me, is the ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING a reasonable motherboard for an 5950x? Any experts?

I would buy that or the crosshair (more/faster USB ports is a plus in my book)…

But always watch a few reviews…

luckily the x570 boards has been out a while so there’s plenty of reviews, I’m just trying to find a reasonable compromise between “why would you buy a mother board that costs less than the cpu” and “just good enough” and what we see of the reviews with the 5950x is usually in the first category.

Judged by the price - no .

Asrock Fatality series boards seem decent as well. But best to do a wide comparison of reviews and features and layout.

Skimmed this thread, could do with some help, not been keeping up with all the info about at the moment.
I have about £2000 to spend in upgrading My PC.
What I have now is…
Intel® Core™ i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz (8 CPUs), OC 4.8GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
DDR4 2666Mhz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080Ti water cooled
7 HD Drives
1 CD Drive
1000watt PSU
May I ask what would you suggest for an upgrade mother board and CPU, and maybe a GPU, OR wait a bit longer to see what is happening with benchmarks on Mother boards and CPU/GPU, and maybe wait to see what is going to be the best GPU I can afford with My current budget .
Looking at the 3080 GPU with only 10G memory looks a bit under spec, and the 3090 looks a bit over priced.

Honestly at this point I would wait and see how things perform.

I would consider at least with CPU consider Amd. With GPU I would wait for more independent benchmarks and see where things are at.

Wait for some:

  1. reviews of Ryzen 5000 series with 500 series motherboard and memories!,
  2. reviews of AMD 6000 series GPUs (and in particular how it copes with 1)
  3. reviews of Nvidia 3080Ti (or whatever Nvidia is going to put up against AMD 6000)

Now is a good time for waiting .

Yes, looks like I need to wait, just trying to get a good start :+1:

considering the scarcity of ryzen 5000 and rtx 30 waiting is not a bad idea, past December it should be much more clear what’s up and down with the gpu’s and things will start coming in stock.

if you plan on going ryzen 5000, then you could look out for a deal on ram, reviews says that 3600 - 4000 mhz should work nicely with them.

makes me happy i got 4 sticks… but that wendell is talking about 2x16 as being the sweetspot makes me a little less happy, i don’t really want to halve my ram

If you use your pc for high resolution VR gaming (8kX or high SS settings) there is no need to upgrade to a new mobo/cpu bundle yet. You have a decent core cpu, eight real cores, with a nice clock already.

Invest in a good memory (min 4000MHz, low latency) and see which module configuration (2x8/16 or 4x4/8) gives you best dual rank performance. 32gb is not yet needed if you game only (except some crazy skyrim texture mods or Fs2020) but it’s definately more future proof. First try to push your memory (if already dual ranked) to the max.

Then invest in a fast ssd. If your mainboard supports nvme ssds, go for it (use a slot with pci3.0x4 physical lanes, look up the manual). If not, buy a cheap fast (mlc faster than qlc and more durable 2.5” ssd). In comparison to the hdds you have thats already a big improvement in workflow and response and also level loading.

If you have the money, go for a 3090 with three 8pin (look for min 350w bios for that card available) and a water cooler and use your custome loop to cool it. If you do not watercool, most 3090 get so hot that they throttle. Thats the fastest and will last for a couple of years, but of course the most expensive. You could also go with a 3080 on water and save 700 bucks. A high wattage 3080 will almost catch a 2x8pin 100watt less 3090.
If you want to wait for the 3080ti, fine. But you will have to wait many month for it to arrive.
Of course you could wait for amds 6800xt (best value out of the three offerings) but history shows that amd so far has crappy vr support and the infinity cache is not a miracle for greater than 2x4k resolution.

If you want to buy a new system, go with the 5600x or 5800x. And make sure your mainboard is an am4 b550/z570 chipset and the ssd is a nvme pcie 4.0x4 one.

If i would have your cpu i would not change the whole platform. But with my 7700k @4.9GHz, i am on the border of upgrading.

First of all: invest a few hours to tune your system (cpu) to the maximum stable frequency and do/watch some comparisons online. All i saw so far is that in high resolution vr gaming your cpu is always waiting for your gpu. The benchmarks amd hypes are up to max 4k and with special amd mainboard and rx6000 gpu features (boost, full memory access) enabled and crippled memory timings (3200MHz)

According to the vid (once you listen to it at 0.5x speed ), the difference is not about how many sticks you have, but how many ranks you have. So, using 4 single rank 8MB modules, gives you 4 ranks in total, while using 2 single rank modules gives you 2 ranks in total. Apparently the new Zen likes 4 ranks more than 2.

On the other hand, if you have dual rank modules (e.g. 16 MB modules), then using two dual ranks modules gives you again 4 ranks in total, but packaged only in two modules and connected over two slots. This way you get the best of the two worlds as having only two sticks seems to be better in getting the timing and overall stability of the memory bus, than having four of them.

You need to have at least two sticks to make use of the both channels on the memory controller.

Important piece you maybe missed: dual rank ram is faster than single rank. If your 4 sticks are already dual rank modules, you can get rid of two with a few percentage performance gain. If your sticks are all four single ranked, you will loose performance and size if you get rid of two sticks

Edit: Risa was faster

I have 4x16gb not sure how that stack up with the ranks, assuming it’s dual rank that would be 8? how does that stack up?

Its a physical property of the module. Look up the spec sheet.

This is exactly the question many are asking themselves right now, under the GN’s video. Just wait, I believe they are going to answer that soon :slightly_smiling_face:.
