A Review of the 2080 ti 32% improvement over 1080 ti

I can only laugh at the people trashing the new RTX cards because the improvements of game tests on 1080p are “only 20%”. xD

This is so wrong on many different levels…

First, game tests test games not graphic cards, they test the whole system!
Let’s imagine a game where the rendering pipeline takes 50% CPU and 50% GPU time (f.e. 5ms + 5ms). Increase the performance of the GPU by 100%, and the effective general perfomance only increases by 33%! (5ms + 2,5ms)

Second, even a GTX1080 many times is not fully utilized at 1080p. So no wonder that the RTX cards cannot improve much at such resolutions and already high frame rates. The higher the frame rates, the more dependent on the rest of the computer system they become.

Be smart and look at the tests that actually test under circumstances relevant for VR (that is high resolutions).
Those tests show 50% over GTX 1080 Ti and 80-100% over GTX 1080.

Even without Raytracing, DLSS, Foveated Rendering, and bunch of other drastic improvements of the new architecture, the RTX 2080 Ti is a no-brainer for anyone who wants to run a new VR headset like the Pimax.

KBash and smash all you like - for high res , future tech and demanding VR the 2080TI is the next step over my 1080. and I think it overly positiv that we finally dont just get more fuel burning HP but a step to better tech.

It’s just my opinion, but if you got the money and are a tech freak I can’t see why not to get it… sure every year brings us better tech so will 2019 but with that focus I would still be playing air borne soldier on my C64.
I will get one, without a rush and should a comparable product be there at the time the 8k arrives - it will have a fair chance to compete. But will there be one?

DAMN it ran the Star Wars Demo over 30FPS on a home computer :computer:!!!

The 2080Ti is a good purchase considering the 1080Ti is pushed to its limits with these Pimax headsets. Not saying the 1080Ti will not be good enough, just you will have to mess about to squeeze every last drop out of it with PiTool settings, Steam SS and lower in-game quality settings whereas a 2080Ti is the cutting edge of what NVidia have at the moment.

Even 10% boost could mean the difference between the odd annoying stutter vs smooth gameplay at these resolutions and that to me is worth it because a stutter in VR breaks immersion and can cause sickness compared to a stutter on a monitor.

The only other choices available are more delays (e.g. 7nm, RTX 3080, Foveated rendering) which is fine for those that can wait it out.

This is my reasoning as well. Chasing every frame I can. Delidding and upgrading to 4000mhz ram soon btw.

@VoodooDE is going to test 2080ti SLI for VR ASAP (cards are still shipping)
It’s going to be very interesting!

In the Virtual Reality department, he says he is very surprised with the 2080 Ti. He has a Lenovo Explorer. 2880x1440 Resolution.

In Fallout 4 VR, with the 1080 Ti he was around 50s FPS but with the 2080 Ti he is doing 90 FPS. Same with Rise Of the Tomb Raider, 90 FPS with 2080 Ti while he had 50s FPS with the 1080 Ti

He is even saying that the card has still margin, because it is not working at it’s fullest. But he doesn’t recommend it due to it’s massive price.

Cheers

Ok hang on has everyone seen this ?

He’s saying it’s like almost a 100% improvement ???

I’ve not heard that anywhere else. Wtf??? This is HUGE news if true.

You sure you got it right?

Imagine this with Star VR. One card per eye. Customized screens. OLED 90Hz. True 200 FOV

And a second mortgage…

Yeah well the cards are already a rip off so whats a little more for the Star Vr One?. Hell prices just droped in my country for the 2080 Ti. 2500 NZD. Thats $1000 more than the 1080 Ti at launch. WTF? are they made from Unobtanium?

You have to take into account the Lenovo explorer I think it’s 1440 x 1440 per eye. The performance will be more costly on the Pimax headsets, due to large FOV, so it will not translate as good, but it seems a good performance increase for VR at least.

I would wait for SweViver take on the 2080ti though, I trust him more.

I agree I trust SweViver more.

But yeah the important thing is the increase percentage here so I’m not too concerned about the pixels rendered. This result is truly groundbreaking if true and will send ripples throughout the VR world. I’m surprised it’s not been picked up on! I wonder if someone who speaks Spanish can clarify with this chap?
