How the hell is the 2080 beating the 2080 ti, and a 1080 ti beating both.
What I noticed in PC Gamer test results that RTX 2080 pretty much exactly matches GTX 1080 Ti in gaming performance. In other words, if you are on the budget maybe some cheap 1080 Ti can serve you as well for lower price (as all RTX seems to be inflated now).
The Orange Room test assesses whether a system is capable of meeting the current minimum requirements.
Perhaps overtime with driver updates it will change a bit? and its basically as capable as it can get.
i was literally just looking at this and a 1080 ti is 150 euro cheaper than 2080 with same performance…
…and if you buy a used, 3 or 5 month old 1080TI with about 1,5 year warranty left, it’s only about half the price of a 2080…
i would be pretty skittish about buying used. do you have any recommendations
I’ve always had good results buying used. Just be sure to get the receipt given or forwarded to you. Most companies are requiring that as part of the RMA process if something does go bad.
Like even looking on ebay i see someone selling used talking about selling it because they are upgrading to 2080 and sounding really homespun but then its quantity 1 of 3 left. so guessing miner??
Jayztwocents’ video is pretty damning to me. Looking at the 1080ti FE vs 2080ti FE, you’re talking 10-15 more frames in 4K on some older games. I can’t imagine that scenario gets better with games like DCS or Elite which don’t use the typical AAA engines.
Considering I’ve been moving closer to the 5K+ > 8K X upgrade path, I am much more inclined to see about a second 1080ti and with any luck doing one display per GPU. Who the hell knows though- feel like the picture changes every few hours around here
RTX 2080 vs GTX 1080 Ti reminds me 5K+ vs 8K dilemma. With 2080 you get RTX (but God knows, if it will ever be useful), but 3GB RAM less. With 1080 Ti you get proven tech, no surprises, but also no improvement in the future. The GamersNexus video @Mr_Teatime posted above is quite detailed about this comparison.
The only problem I see is that amazon.de lists 1080 Ti from 800 to 1000 euros, which is not price I expected, but now after 2080 is revealed, I guess they can keep it that way.
In my opinion, these cards are crap. Absolute crap. You’re seeing changes of 30% over the 1080 and maybe 20% over the 1080ti only in some cases, even when talking the 1080 TI against the $1200 2080 TI.
This explains an awful lot about the Embargo, the focus on Ray tracing, and the b******* pre-orders. They knew these cards sucked beforehand.
Also of note: These reviews seem to be focused on the Founder’s Edition RTX 2080 Ti, which is overclocked. A standard 2080 Ti will have lower performance.
I still plan to upgrade my 980 Ti to a 2080 Ti, but I’m going to wait a bit to see if the price drops. Given the reviews, it might.
Guys, for VR, and especially for those of us getting a Pimax, I think, we need to look at results at the highest resolutions (for supersampling).
For example, look at the 4K results:
It is clear that the higher resolution you go, the more advantage 2080ti has, which I think is very important for VR for supersampling.
If you have a 1080, it looks like 2080ti is almost 2x performance at high resolutions. Switching to 2080ti could mean unplayable 50 fps in a game on Pimax 5K+ turns into a smooth 90 fps. OR for already smooth game, it would allow to supersample more for even sharper image.
mindfactory.de has them a good chunk cheaper than that. edit from 684 euros.
i in ireland got my last gpu from them. which tells you a lot about gpu prices here.
Thanks for these performance links guys.
I found the Futuremark VRmark tables found about halfway down the page on link below very interesting.
Previously posted above:
NVidia wasn’t worried about leftover cards because they forced all their overstock onto their manufacturing partners.
I told ya all…
In any case, tomshardware is often one of the most affordable regarding benchmark numbers and correct setups and measurements.
As far as I see it, better wait for the next Nvidia architecture…in the meantime, until developers get used to fully squeeze the new Turing architecture, features and render pipeline, a 1080Ti bought on the cheap used market will do more than enough with a Pimax 5K+ (thanks to the stupid Nvidia fanboys that rushed to sell it )
Not good for VR, unless it pushes foveated rendering development/deployment.

I think @SweViver 's tests with the 2080ti will be a critical second check on this. If it in fact turns out that a single 2080ti doesn’t allow a big enough gain to make the 8K run well enough beyond 1.5 (where it meets/starts to supersede the 5K+) then it will become LARGELY about how far Pimax’s software updates can carry the ball. Otherwise the 8K won’t realistically start to shine till- what- 2020? And I say this as a person who wants the 8K to work
