8KX connection problem?

Seems to me, problems flashing the Vive was one of the issues, but that was a while ago and my memory sucks. But I seem to remember those same people finding out that they couldn’t flash their motherboard, either! First remedy of a motherboard issue is make sure that the Bios is the latest, and we were all doing that, no matter what board we got.
I haven’t been playing with the x570’s yet, so here’s hoping!!!

  • 1x not directly connected although PiTool said “connected”. Did “Reboot HMD”, and it launched :+1:
  • 1x Steam “VR compositor.exe” crashed after appr. 1 hour of driving ETS2 in VR. Game itself continued. No freeze, no blue/black screen or the like. CPU @50°C, GPU @70°C at that time. I Alt+F4’ed the game, SteamVR re-started itself properly, I relaunched the game, drove another 20 minutes.

It is what it is…

Could be

  • mainboard related;
  • PiTool driver related;
  • SteamVR related;
  • NVidia driver related;
  • any other chipset or Windows whatsoever driver or background app / service related…

:man_shrugging:

As long as the PC itself and apart from the 8K-X and SteamVR is working well, without freezes or blue screens etc., and as long as such things don’t happen once every 10 minutes, but only once or twice per week, well, then I’ll just have to continue, see, and wait.
Might be that one or the other update of any of the above-mentioned components fixes the crashes.

Just for info, for @PimaxQuorra too, perhaps Pimax is able to investigate from their side on such and similar issues.

Thought an odd thought.
Like MrAhlefeld posted, the only way I can get mine to run properly is to actually leave the USB 2.0 plug hanging in the air, while the USB 3.0 is plugged into a USB ‘C’ port.
From what I understand, the USB 2.0 plug is just for power and can be plugged into an external USB power block. Have you tried using a ‘C’ port for the USB 3.0 and external power for the USB 2.0? I’m thinking that this may give you longer gameplay? Might be worth a shot if you haven’t tried it already.

You know I just realized today I may have a problem. Coming from over a decade of intel based systems I heard that these motherboards need a bios update to work with Zen3

I bought the Asus TUF Gaming Plus.

If I dont have the new bios im screwed.

Not necessarily:
There are boards which allow access to the BIOS at least, even with the “wrong” CPU, so you could be lucky to do a BIOS update this way.
But it certainly depends on the manufacturer and the mainboard.

So, have already a look at the correct BIOS version, download it to an USB-stick, and then give it a try. If you can enter the BIOS, it could work.

Depending on the Mobo some can update the bios through a usb port possibly without cpu.

If not a local pc shop can likely flash the mobo for you.

If your near Guelph, Ontario. I recommend extreme-pc as he is and his team are experts in Amd systems.

So the Tuf Gaming Plus didn’t have the Bios Flashback feature, but the TUF Gaming Pro does.

I asked Canada Computers in Barrie what if they would flash it and hey said $50.

So i just got the Pro for $50 more and will flash it myself sans CPU. On the plus side I get one extra usb 3.2 Gen 2 port and built in wifi 6 for connecting my Quest 2 to. :v:

Also I did the most responsible thing when I was at the store. As I was leaving something caught my eye. So i walked up to the counter and there they were. Not 1, Not 2 Not 3 but 4 different RTX 3090 cards. They were screaming at me “Buy US!!”

I quickly clutched my wallet and ran out of the store.

What’s funny is that on their website they are all listed as out of stock. So they must literally have just got them Or some thing more nefarious

Well, if one can pass on Raytracing and DLSS, then the new 6900 XT would be the better choice anyway: Still expensive, of course, but far cheaper than the 3090, having 16 GB VRAM, which should be sufficient for the next 3-4 years, needing noticeably less power, and being only slightly slower than the 3090, depending on the use-case.
As I’d need simple raw-power for VR, the 3090 is out of the race for me since yesterday, completely, besides being much too expensive anyway. For me, it now depends only which of these three GPU is earliest available for a reasonable price:

  • 3rd place: 6800 XT (best Gigabyte Aorus with AiO-watercooling; or ASUS ROG equivalent)
  • 2nd place: RTX 3080 (best Gigabyte Aorus or ASUS as above)
  • 1st place: best 6900 XT (same here)

For the moment, I first ordered a Ryzen 5600X this morning, hopefully really on stock and available… If it is and shipped, I’ll look for a fitting mainboard.

Right for the moment, both prices as well as availability of high-end components is worse than ever… and I fear it won’t get better in the upcoming months due to Corona…

Okay, I am giving MSI another try:
MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi

I had a look at comparable ASUS und Gigabyte mainboards, and I wasn’t really convinced… either they got a little worse ratings and comments, especially considering the loudness of the new chipset fan, or they were at least 20, 30€ more expensive… considering the fact that my whole upgrade now is the most expensive one I ever did in terms of CPU (always <200€ in the past) and mainboard (always <120€), I think, it is not really necessary to invest (much) more than needed…

So I’ll see. The Gaming Edge gets quite good comments, and well, if it doesn’t work well, then I can return it within 30 days. Should be sufficient for the first evaluation.

I chose the Asus TUF Gaming Pro as it has Bios Flash back and seemed to get good reviews.

I had an MSI Z97 Gaming 3 for 6 years. Didn’t really have any complaints…I just wanted something different.

The CPU already arrived this afternoon :partying_face:

Hey everyone, new here and not sure how to create a new topic but I just got an 8KX and I’m having issues. The HMD worked flawlessly for the first like 15 minutes then the HMD started flickering a white screen over and over again. I reinstalled SteamVR, Pitool, even tried using the beta version of Pitool but no luck. Sometimes I would get an error message in the beta version saying that the DP connection is weak or something. I tried different ports on my GPU, tried a different GPU, tried different USB ports, even the “VR Ready” ports on my motherboard. The LED on the 8KX would be purple or red with the chevron in the front flashing green. Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Will

Welcome to the forum!

Can you post your system specs Nd motherboard model? Pitool version

Absolutely. MSI x570 Godlike, EVGA FTW3 3090, AMD 5800x, Pitool v1.0.1.263, and the latest FW on the 8KX (don’t have it plugged in right now)

I would recommend updating to pitool 2.087 v2.0 in this topic and try out Pimax Experience

https://community.openmr.ai/t/pimax-vr-experience-version-0-84-0-0-beta-available-now/33811?u=heliosurge

2.087 v2 pitool is newer but will tell you in pitool there is a new version (ignore for now next official beta will be higher than 266)

The low signal message on Display port means one of your other ports in theory should have s stronger signal.

Are you using the extra Usb2 cable on a wall plug usb power? As there is the usb3 cable and the other usb is for extra power.

Got it, now I have PiTool V1.0.2.087, Pimax VR Experience v0.84.0.0, and my headset firmware is V2.1.255.294. I’ve got both USB cables plugged in, the one with the blue end is plugged into VR ready USB and the other one is plugged into a wall plug for extra power. I’m experiencing the same symptoms where the headset is periodically flashing a white screen. LED on the headset is purple and the chevron is flashing green. I’ve tried different ports on my GPU as well.

Update: I don’t know why this would make a difference but when I changed the refresh rate on my monitor, that made everything work!

Good to hear some games do seem to be affected by monitor refresh rate

Love your CPU Choice. :grinning:

Any issues with performance? is it awesome?

see my topic about my insecurities with the 5800x here

https://community.openmr.ai/t/so-i-just-realized-im-a-sucker-may-have-overpaid-for-my-ryzen-5800/33818?u=drowhunter

The 5800 should be a good choice as the 8 core 16 threads Ryzen have been a nice choice( I have the 2700x and am quite happy with it).

Prior even the 6 core 12 threads have been a nice for gamers.

However yes it would be good to hear from someone here in there thoughts of the 5800.

I have my new built with the X570 Gaming Edge from MSI in service for one week now, and so far, everything is working perfectly. I already drove for ten hours or so in VR, no disconnects, no USB issues, no crashes. I just had to “convince” my 8K-X once to launch and wake up by restarting it via PiTool, but that’s all.

In total, I am quite satisfied with the new setup and the new installation - and hopefully I am not celebrating it too soon :wink:

Any news from you, @drowhunter ?
