8KX 120hz native 4K mode using FFR and 90hz normal fov native 4k input mode

Since the 8KX displays do refresh up to 120hz, is there any way to use FFR to increase the frame rate of the 8KX past 75hz-90hz?

Say, on the 8KX since it was reported that 80hz native 4k in large fov mode is in beta Pitools being developed now.

Can’t Pimax cut some fov off for 90hz normal fov native 4k mode to work, if 80hz native 4k in large fov is working in beta pitools on the 8KX, as cutting off fov for extra refresh rate works for the 5K+ and 5K super?

And then using FFR 120hz refresh rate on normal fov native 4k mode should be possible, in the middle of the display and the periphery could be rendered in 1440p. This is exactly like Varjo does rendering, without the fused displays (high res in the middle and low res on the outer edges)

Unlikely I would think, unless the upscaler is some kind of fancy FPGA.

Surely it would be a simple enough task of uncapping the FPS limit from 90hz to 120hz and just enable FFR in Pitool?

FFR works on the PC (gfx card) not the HMD. The same number of pixels are sent. It’s the pixels per second through the cable that is the bottleneck. FFR (and DFR) do not help with this in their current implementation.

@PimaxQuorra could you please find out if it is possible to uncap the display refresh rate on the 8KX in native mode seeing as the 8KX displays are 120hz capable (going by the fact the 8KX and 8K+ work in 118hz mode in upscaled mode so the displays can refresh that fast)

If the FPS limit was uncapped, then using FFR it should maybe be possible to achieve 90-120hz in native mode on the 8KX, especially if Pimax enables 90hz mode on normal fov native mode on the 8KX.

So to put it simple if you could ask the pitool engineers:

  • Is uncapping FPS limit in native input mode (no upscaling) on the 8KX to the displays refresh limit of 120hz possible?
  • Can Pimax implement a 80-90hz setting for normal fov native input (true 4k mode) on the 8KX without using the upscaler?
  • If FPS limit on native mode is uncapped to 120hz, then using fixed foveated rendering to achieve stable 120hz without using the upscaler might be possible on the 8KX, by using FFR setting and a 90hz setting on normal fov native input (true 4k mode) if that was implemented.

Hello,

Thank you for the suggestions, we will forward to the Pitool Engineers, but not sure all of these can be apply via the firmware.
Besides research on the firmware to achieve, it might relate to the lenses.
Somehow, all of these are worth a try tho!

Sincerely.
