8K X gets incredibly hot to the touch near the DP/USB Plug at the HMD side - anyone else noticing this?

Hi everyone!
So i recently noticed the 8K X started to get really hot where the plug enters the headset, right on the top/left side.

I wrote to support to see if this is normal and they said yes, the 8k x does run hot and they gave me an experimental .293 firmware with different config files supposedly. Now it’s running so hot that after 2-3 seconds i can’t keep my hand on it.

I noticed this from the the first day, when my brother touched it accidentally and i didnt even try the USB to power block or tundra adapter at that time yet, and it’s still the same 3 days later.

Can anyone else confirm theirs is running hot to the touch on that side of the HMD? I purposely ordered an infrared thermometer to see how hot it’s getting but another user said if it gets hot to the touch, it’s over 40celcius.

EDIT: I have added an Internal Self-Powered USB 3.0 Hub and added the 2 USB cables from the 8K X to the USB Hub, since i was getting usb conflicts and other strange issues. I also updated to the latest Beta as well. Every since doing both, the temps have come down to a much lower range than before and I can touch it without it feeling as hot as it did before. I got a FLIR camera to check the temps and they didnt go over 48C. It may seem like a high temp from the camera’s image, but to the touch the headset feels mostly cool to the touch with a very slight hint of heat at the connector area. I attribute my temp issues to USB Power issues mostly I think although the new firmware may have added some config data that lowered the temps somehow, although I do believe it was mainly due to the USB power more than anything.

From my 8K review:

Hopefully it won’t be very hot inside the 8KX either :slightly_smiling_face:

I didnt notice heat inside, but the fact that it is getting this hot will eventually cause components to fail, including this housing. Not sure how long it’ll take but by the feel, we may start seeing problems sooner than later.

It is good that it is not as hot inside as outside.

On the whole, yes, this gives rise to some concerns. On the other hand, nothing bad happened with my 8K in six months.

Hopefully you will soon be able to measure the exact temperature with a pyrometer for comparison :beers:

You mean 8K X, not 8K, right?

Yes, of course, because I’m also waiting for 8KX, and the heating issue bothers me a little … :slightly_smiling_face:

I have the 5K+ 2018 model, 5k+ Blue housing 2020 model, and tried the 5k OLED model, none of those came close to the heat as this 8K X model.

Looks like we need a fan for the 8KX case

Maybe the fan module they were supposed to come out with - lol

Although I do have VR-N-Chill Fans. That might be a decent idea except those fans are so small they dont really do much

… and the fact that the 8K-X doesn’t have a top USB port anymore

@MikeJeffries So I tried plugging my X in, and just removing the thin USB. It’s no longer very hot. It is however very slightly warm, almost hard to tell, and noticeably less than when both USB are plugged in.

Its weird because i saw the headset clearly powered on with either usb in the pc (i can see the Power LED on with either of the USB’s in), although i didnt try to run a game with only 1 USB plugged in.

I have a feeling the 2nd USB may just be for the USB Hub to power the 1 usb port possibly?

Has anyone tried playing games on the thicker USB cable and the DP cable only?

The VR-n-Chill manufacturer recommends NOT using the HMD ports on the Pimax, because it introduces electrical noise in the headphone speakers. You need to (1) run an extra USB cable, (2) run the fan off of a battery pack, or (3) use the headset USB port and a wireless headset. I’ll be using (3), at least until my DMAS arrives.

With my DAS i never had a problem with the vr n chill fans, on the 5k+ thru the top usb port. But i didnt try it on the 8k x

I have the same issue of left side getting hot. To the point that when I first use it, my left lens tends to get foggy for a while - never the right side. I suppose the air inside gets hot and then condenses on the cold lens.

So i asked support and they said if the. Lenses fee the heat then its a problem but not if its just on top. You might want to contact them

So a few things changed. 1st i added an internal usb 3.0 self-powered hub to connect the pimax usb cables to since i was having usb conflicts. It seems to be a little power hungry

I updated to the latest beta from yesterday.

I got the flir camera today as well but surprisingly today the headset feels ALOT more tolerable and it doesnt hurt to touch the connector any more. Although it is showing over 40C on the first pics ive taken.

See below. It is getting hotter though. Ill monitor it because maybe it just hasnt gotten to the high temps ive felt before which was alot more than it feels like with the pics i took below

A few minutes later. Its got a little hotter. Still doesnt feel like it did before.

Another few minutes later 48.6C showing

Ill try again after a gaming session because even now it doesnt feel as hot as it was before. Hopefully it really doesnt get worse than this because at this temp it feels tolerable and i can touch it without it feeling too hot
