8k to 8k X upgrade options

Hi Pimax team/@deletedpimaxrep1 ,

I have backed the 8k, however, I am interested in upgrading to the 8k X version.

1, Will this be offered to existing 8k owners as a seperate “bolt in” upgrade in the future?
2, Does the 8k X allow the user to play with a single display lead where GPU limited to use the 1440p quality setting?
3, Is there any incremental cost or option to receive the 8k early and then the 8k X after? (I do see others talking about it and even mentioned by Pimax, but is there an “official” stance on this?

I would happily back the X version if point 2 and 3 is met/possible.

Many thanks and well done so far, you have a great chance to make your product the true benchmark. I for one hope it’s every bit as good as it can be

Andrew,
You would better get PiMax’s attention by adding @PIMAX-Support, @PimaxVR,and @deletedpimaxrep1 to your post. that will direct you question to them directly.

Done, thanks for that Jim

really would love to upgrade to X, IF the X version has the function of upscaling lower resolutions and if its possible to use it with 1080 or 1080ti. I will not buy a SLI system. Because of that i backed the non X Version as early bird. if there are more informations about the X version i would maybe upgrade. Would be nice if its possible just by adding $200 to the pledge.

That’s the only reason I didnt back the X version. There is absolutly no info on it and its not available for another 8 months. I figure get tge 8k in dec/jan. Try it out and if you really feel the FOV and lenses are good enough to go that step further then upgrade to the 4k X retail version as soon as its available. Its nearly a year away

From what I can gather from the Kickstarter (KS) comments tab on the KS page, Pimax will send 8K backers an email survey to poll them what they want to do. If this is correct, it sounds a sensible idea.

Here is the quote from the KS page:

''Q: I would appreciate some extra clarification about the option for 8K X backers that receive an 8K to later exchange for 8K X:

  1. Will the exchange option incur extra costs at the backer’s expense for shipping the 8K headset back to you, or shipping/customs fees when sending the replacement 8K X to the backer?
  2. Will the original 8K device that the backer ships back be upgraded to 8K X and shipped back, or will a new 8K X device be sent as a replacement?
  3. Are there any other caveats that we should be aware of with the exchange option?

Congratulations on meeting your kickstarter target and looking forward to seeing an 8K X on my face in the near future!
A: Thank you for listing the mini-faq for X backers!

  1. For our Kickstarter backers, we will take care of the shipping costs. We can discuss with you later in terms of custom for a reasonable solution.
  2. It depends on how will we handle the original 8K units. Let me double check with the team and get back to you.
3 We will send you a survey by the end of the campaign to collect detailed information from you, and then prepare the shipment.

Yeah but I was also told, as an early bird back of the pimax 8k, that we’d be offered to exchange and upgrade at a later date.

OK, so based on the above, I have switched to the X version. Even if it cannot be run on a single DP initially (I would like to hold out for a volta Ti as have a 1080 at the mo) steam VR allows for down sampling so could be a stopgap in the meantime. Mind you, deffo want the non X as May is a long time to wait until!! (and I am too impatient for then ha ha)

I just ordered the normal 8K full kit for Dec/Jan delivery and will sell and upgrade the headset only in 8 months when the X proves itself. By that time I’m sure the 8K X will be available on their website anyway

Take into account that the 8K X may reach well beyond the price of what we see now.

The dilemma is pay now or possibly more later.

It could also go in reverse, pay now, see the 8K X for cheaper later because maybe competition will arise.

Next Gen GPU’s are also needed so there goes more money.

Lastly, we all could get nothing because we are all rolling the dice at this junction.

Agree with everything you said.

Here’s my take on the situation now the dust has settled and reality has set in. If we’re paying big money, it would be wise to take Pimax’s advice and go for the 8K, even if we paid ‘more’ for 8K-X to reserve it in May 2018. (Worse case scenario is we get ripped off the price difference between the 8K and 8K-X as 8K-X never materialises). Best case (if the 8K-X project fails) we get refunded the difference and lose no money. However…

My hunch is Pimax will keep their word, and send us a limited run on 8K-X models (300 or so globally) but then not produce any more for their website store until NVIDIA Volta is well established, which if we need the Ti model, will realistically be 2019 launch window as Ti usually comes at least 6-8 months after the top level new series cards are launched.

I’ve been reading Kickstarter and Pimax are disuading pledgers over their keen interest in 8K-X, the reason being: 1) it doesn’t exist, and 2) there is far less profit margin in selling a niche product (8K-X) rather than mainstream (8K-X) that a little old 1080 can handle just fine. Pimax want numbers, numbers = profit, profit = more investement in tech years ahead like 8K OLED with HDR.

So I hope a good and fair compromise, is we do get out 8K-X models next year, but likely on the unspoken understanding they are ‘one off’ Kickstarter project models that are so advanced (GPU demands) the final more polished 8K-X model (that won’t need two cables) probably surfaces 12 months of so later for the wider public.

So in effect, if Pimax can deliver, I believe 8K-X model owners will be prototype testers, which is fair enough as this is a Kickstarter project after all and we’re all pioneers together.

The question is will it have scaling options? You cant go wrong with that. They have it in Piplay now for the P4K. you can choose 1080p / 1440p. I don’t see why they wouldn’t have that option? seriously considering upgrading my pledge

I’m in the same boat. Backed the 8K, want to change to X version, as I didn’t realize the difference at the time. Willing to pay the difference, don’t care if there’s a delay between the 8K and 8K X delivery, I just want the higher bandwidth option because of the applications I develop.

This is my concern… I literally just investigated Pimax properly today (I had unjustly marked them as facebook spam because their advert kept appearing for the last few months(?) every 30 minutes in my feed) and have 24 hours left before the end of the Kickstart.

If possible, I would like to aim for the most future proof version rather than a neutered version knowing that it will be able to accept unscaled, native input from future cards in a year or two’s time, more powerful than the 1080ti even in SLI…

edit: @304 I was literally just about to click the pledge button when I saw the “already gone” pledges at the bottom of the page and found the 8k X, leading me on a quest for knowledge… I was disappointed to find that not only is the Pimax 8K not 8K because of the half height verticals (which I knew beforehand), but it’s not even 8k horizontally because it’s an upscaled 1440p, which is going to be roughly 2540 horizontally (minus scaler errors, smoothing and artefacts which inevetably reduce this figure even more…) so it’s possible that the 8k (running at 5k) with a CLPL rather than OLED will give a sub 5k quality experience… I just saw some closeups of rendered figures and have to say the 5k and 8k are very close…
And the 5k is 90Hz, isn’t it?.. (can someone confirm this?)

Nope, apparently they can’t even get 90hz working stable on the 5K headset yet. They said “it’s more stable than the 8K” (can achieve 85hz stable I think where they only have 82hz stable on the 8K).

With just 3 months to shipping (18/02 as delivery date listed) it’s going to have to be a firmware/software fix… The hardware must surely be already baked.
