8k+ just arrived today (Ordered Mar 27th) Impressions

So I rolled the dice on the open orders from March 27th and my HMD just got here today, after some UPS hell, not Pimax fault on this one, UPS said 2-3 business days, then they sent it all over the place for 2 weeks.

Coming from a 5k+ I am VERY please so far. The SDE is completely gone now, to my eyes at least. Having a Reverb really showed a stark contrast in good SDE, and I have been left wanting all this time with the 5k+.

Tried a few games today, Thumper, Alyx, and some vr porn, all of which looked just as good, if not better than the Reverb.

The comfort kit though is a game changer.

The way it cups the entire forehead takes 100% of the stress off of your face, like burying your head in a pillow is how I could best describe it.

I have the old vive DAS, and it works fine on the 8k+, it really changes the pressure spots on your head and redistributes the weight well.

Though I have only been playing with it for a few hours now, I am totally satisfied with the move.

I will be looking to do a more indepth review later on, but as of right now, no regrets at all.

That’s great to hear! Do you notice any distortions?

To be honest not more than the 5k+ in my eyes. But to be fair, I have not really had much issues with them on there either, I don’t think I am very sensitive to distortion.

If I am Iooking for it, I can see it on both displays, but during use I don’t notice it at all.

Great @Cofn42! What’s your thoughts on colour and blacks vs the 5k+?

Close to on par with the 5k+. I do find the blacks are a bit better, have things set to the normal +2 -2 and the black on menus and such is pretty good, I have yet to fire up Elite Dangerous yet and see how space looks.

Colors too, reltively on par, if not a little better. The colors in Thumper really seem to pop, more so than I recall on the 5k+, gonna try hooking the 5k+ back up tomorrow and see if I am remembering things right.

Glad to hear you are satisfied with the comfort kit. I just ordered one for my 5K+.
I am really satisfied with the 5K+ still and it works ok with DAS + apache strap but the comfort kit looks promising because I use a second Vive mask on it right now wich is not perfect.

Fun fact: You can’t buy a comfort kit at the moment but you can order one at aliexpress - mine got shipped now so they have it in stock. That’s typical Pimax for you.

A lot of times I’ve been tempted to buy an 8K+ while waiting for my 8K-X. But hopefully the wait is worth it for that native 4K

Don’t think it will better than the Reverb, but should be somewhat comparable

I got sent a picture of a big pile of comfort kits from Pimax a couple of days ago.

I guess it might have been one open box with a comfort kit in it and a hundred empty boxes  but I think it was actual stock.

At this point I am leaning towards the “better” side as visuals are, to my eyes at least, sharper on the 8k+. SDE is the same. Clarity is on par or better, while the image is slightly “softer” than the 5k+, it is still better than the HP. Maybe it is the added FOV that plays tricks on the eyes, but I am just overall more impressed with the image on the 8k+

8k+>Reverb in picture quality is very surprising and very encouraging for me who wait for the 8kX!
Did you had time to check again colours and black levels against 5k+?

2 reasons I decided to go with the 8k+ over the 8kx.

1st was the native refresh, it is 75 and I just felt that may not be good enough, not since we have gotten used to 100+ in most cases. I know the 8k+ is 90, with the promise of 110 coming, and that is good enough for me.

2nd is my concern with a 2080ti being enough to fully utilize the 8kx. You have to drive the card pretty hard to go max settings on an average true 4k game, so bumping this up to x2 as much, I cannot see it being viable without a 3080ti and I am just not willing to put out another 2k on a video card.

Pretty sure the 8k+ is the sweet spot, for me at least.

I will try taking a look tonight, been busy the last couple days, have not had a chance to even put on the 8k+ again since my initial playing around. /sigh

Are you planning to order the MAS separately or stick with the headstrap of the 8K plus?

I have the Vive DAS and I am thus far satisfied with it, I find the audio from it is decent enough and it is rather comfortable once you add the VRCover rear cushion.

That said once the MAS is released and reviewed I may end up snagging one.

I am not a fan at all of the included headstrap. It is not comfortable at all in my opinion. I really thing that Pimax should have made the MAS a priority from the beginning, not something to put out at the end of a 3 year cycle.

VR immersion only works for me when I can forget the headset entirely. So it has to be comfortable and feel like wearing a ball cap if you will. Something that just kinda disappears.

So I mucked about a bit with the 5k+ to compare tonight and I can honestly say things look better color and black level wise on the 8k+

They are not OLED levels obviously, but they are an improvement.

It has got me thinking about something too. I do my own professional projector calibrations, so I am going to fire up a few of my color test pallets and see if I can make things better by tweaking the PiTool. Likely sometime next week if I have time.

I am curious if I can tweak things to make the more accurate or not. Time will tell.

A user tried to calibrate his 5k+ with great results it seems. He also linked his ICC profile :

What about glare and godrays? Are they any better compared to your 5k+?

They appear to be about the same to me. This is one thing I am pretty sensitive to, I seem them on both devices.
