8K, 5K, 4K SDE comparison

Not sure but keep in mind what i presented is speculated on how they could have done it.

I added a couple of pokes to your reply.

Why is 8k still listed as 90hz? I thought they were having some #ort of issue with it.

One more clarification. When you compare 8K and 4K for example must be different magnification factor of the lens. 8K and 5K lens magnification factor is only 2/3 of the 4K/Vive/Rift lens magnification.
What that mean in practice? That means if 4K/Vive/Rift lens magnification i x3 on 5K/8K should be x2.25 magnification. Magnification is increasing size of pixel and SDE grils. So for example on 4K and 8K comparison where PPI is same size (807). So to get some numbers to compare SDE in value we will use this formula PPI/lens magnification=VR SDE value remeber higher is better.
Vive/CV1 - 470/3=157 - 100%
4K - 807/3=269 - 171%
5K - 539/2.25=235 - 146%
8K - 807/2,25=358 - 228%

So to get picture how this is effecting on SDE and this photo is proving even it is not corectly filmed under same condition.
on 5K and 8K numbers should be smaller not bigger but even it is not corectly filmed to get exact same condition it is prove smaler SDE so this numbers I represent to you shoving exactly that.

According to this even 5K will not be a bad choice.

I’ve pledged for 2*8K headsets, but I’m torn as to whether I should downgrade to the 5K. I don’t know how much faith I have in the upscaling module. I don’t know what kind of latency it will introduce, and whether fine detail in the distance will be blurred. The pictures displayed here are not controlled enough to really tell the story. The color temperature is different, the contrast level is different, and as @destraudo mentions there’s a chromatic effect on the photo of the 8K.

I’ve always played games with AA turned off, and tbh 1440*2560 native is enough of an upgrade from the occulus and vive that it’s worth it on its own, combined with the 200 FOV it’s a no brainer. I just don’t know whether it’s worth an extra $100 to reduce SDE at the cost of image sharpness and lower latency. i’m not holding my breath for foveated rendering either as by the time that sees widespread adoption the next generation of headsets will be ready.

I don’t think the latency will be noticeable, it’s not in the Pimax 4k and I highly doubt it will be worse in the Pimax 8k. I do own an 1440p headset too (deepoon E3) and compared to my Pimax 4k the SDE is quite bad, at least in my experience. So my advise would be to go for the 8k for sure.

I changed my pledge from Pimax 8K to Early Bird Pimax 5K. For me the most important thing is the 200 FOV. And according to the numbers and pictures above, 5K will still have much smaller SDE than Vive or Oculus…

@deletedpimaxrep1 Did you ask the guy?

I have been looking carefully at my LGG4 1440p LCD screen through various cardboard goggles one with 90 degree field of view and another with about 110 degrees ,As the screen has the same PPI and PPD as the 5k has (with just half the field of view) it seem a fair comparison .
The pixels are hardly noticeable and the SDE on the LGG4 LCD screen is heaps better than the vive . even with the stronger magnification of the 110 degree cardboard viewer , add to that the fact that there is no up-scaling I have gone for 5K model

I have the same phone. :beers::sunglasses::+1::beers:

Me too , bought it on Aliexpress almost for free. Hope I wont get Boot-Loop :frowning: .

I took mine apart and put copper heatsink tape and thermal paste over the cpu/gpu ( as per youtube videos ) ,not had a problem as it runs a little bit cooler ,

One remark or question. There are only like 350 Pimax 5K unit pledges chosen by backers. And about 4500 8K units.
So will Pimax take the same care regarding 5K units development as for 8K, which are much much more desired…?

Same everything without the scaler and different screen so coming off the same production line (with a modification )

its literally the same product minus the scalar hardware and with a lower res panel. The industrial design tooling etc would be identical to 8k.

You need to know 5K nad other 110° FOV VR solution are not the same because diferent lens magnification so PPI and PPD are not the same.
G4 or Deepoon E3 or Pimax BE got 12,8 PPD and Pimax5K got 17 PPD. If you are asking how here is the answer-
G4/E3/BE have 1280 and 100° FOV per eye so PPD is 1280/100=12.8
5K have 2560 and 150° FOV per eye so PPD is 2560/150=17

With SDE is little diferent but simmilar issue. G4/E3/BE got same PPI as 5K but to get some number value of SDE you got calculate lens magnification in simmilar way as FOV in PPD. I was explaining that few post earlier so I will here just ad in comparison this G4/E3/BE vs 5K.

Vive/CV1 - 470/3=157 - 100%
G4/E3/BE - 530/3=176- 112%
5K - 530/2.25=235 - 146%
8K - 807/2,25=358 - 228%

As you can see 5K got better SDE ratio because different lens magnification.

@deletedpimaxrep1 @bacon @Matthew.Xu can you guys please reply to the following questions concerning the SDE:

  1. Is the pimax 5k shot shown here the oled or clpl version?

  2. Why does it look like the 4K has better resolution than the 5K, is this correct?

  3. It seems like the 5K’s SDE is not too bad in the picture, not very different than the 4k or 8k, can we expect this level of SDE on the final product?

The 4K definitely has a higher perceived resolution/pixels per degree, because it actually has a higher number of pixels (8,294,400 vs 7,372,800) and it’s also condensed into a 110 degree field of view instead of the 200 that the 5K has.

Hmmm… not good to know… but the 4k requires a lesser graphics card than the 5k? Even though more pixels are driven in the 4K?

Can @Matthew.Xu and @bacon reply to my other questions please?

  1. Is the pimax 5k shot shown here the oled or clpl version?

  2. Answered by evertec. Thank you

  3. It seems like the 5K’s SDE is not too bad in the picture, not very different than the 4k or 8k, can we expect this level of SDE on the final product?

I’ve given up asking xunshu. Seems he never replies to anything.

Hi Yulius, bacon and matthew will answer your questions. Thanks!
