The VR runtimes have to be optimized for BigNavi and infinity cache first. The larger the resolution the less it might work well but that has to be seen in case of VR.
When the VR render targets don’t fit maybe caching same resources for rendering stereo can turn it for the better.
Looking at frame drops and so it felt like 50/50 and 6800xt totaly new so no update drivers when this test was done.
Interesting choice not to use the new Ryzen processors to see if SAM or Rage Mode helps in VR at all. I would love to see the benchmarks run on an AMD system to see if that helps the 6800XT.
The RX 6800 XT delivered 152.52 unconstrained FPS with 6 Warp Misses and 259 dropped frames (5%), although none of its frames had to be synthesized.
The RTX 3080 delivered 145.20 unconstrained FPS with 7 Warp Misses and 7 dropped frames, and it required 173 (3%) synthetic frames.
Dropped frames are more noticeable than synthetic frames and the RTX 3080 delivers a smoother VR experience for Fallout 4 although it also suffered warp misses.

honestly 3080 for VR is a waste of the money. 10GB is a big joke and after testing few games I can for sure say that for VR 16GB is minimum.
I have 3090 and in Assetto Corsa Competizione with smart smoothing I’m using over 15GB VRAM with 160% supersampling.
3000 series is a new generation, and 10GB is not enough already so whoever wants to keep 3080 for next year or even two years will be disappointed

Actually, the software does not have to be optimized for big navi. Still, I agree VRAM is a big deal for Vr at higher res. That’s why I chose the 3090. It’s a lot more money, but I’m confident it has enough power and Vram to be a hseful card at least through the next generation.Besides AMD really annoyed me when their 6800 launch was even worse than nvidia’s after they’d spent a couple of months telling us that stock availability would be much higher than the rtx3000 series… If they just had the guts to say “ you know we’re going to have trouble meeting demand and due to pandemic inspired issues we just aren’t going to have the stock right away”, I would have been OK with that. But don’t tell me it’s not going to be a paper launch and then make it a parchment paper launch.
Guess we will se now when other manufactures come out with 68000xt how many they had at start.
Im just happy AMD is competitive, because this increases the chance we’ll see that 20GB 3080Ti
One consideration that should at least be in the mix is so far we’ve found turing and ampere are yielding much better experimental results for potential future firmware improvements.
Do tell us more, what type of firmware improvements are we talking…?
That’s as much detail as I can provide. Just know some future enhancements potentially will not function on architectures other than turing or ampere.
PS: I too am extremely happy AMD is competitive again.

Lol…This is why I tell people that I will never switch away from nvidia even if amd had better performance. Its the fact that nVidia just had so much more mature software and invest so much in bleeding edge tech like VR , DLSS and steroscopic rendering for years.
I cant deal with cutting edge new feature not being compatible with my AMD card.
Well that makes me a little happier to have upgraded to a 3090 instead of an AMD. But in the long term I wonder how wise that is for Pimax? AMD is extremely closely tied to directX 12, and all the development tools that come with it and which will be transparent to developers for Xbox and PlayStation. I think pimax would be well advised to be as compatible as possible with amd cpu and gpu iterations.
In the meantime my MSI 3090 should arrive tomorrow. It looks like it’s been money well spent.
Yes, that is true. At least for the next two years until the next generation comes, NVidia might still be the better decision for VR. That’s why I am very close buying a 3080… I think, 10 GB will be sufficient for now, because, yes, 16, 20 or 24 GB might be better for higher resolutions - but the 11 GB of my 2080 Ti already suffice largely for any game and VR I am playing so far. And increasing either FOV or SS even with a 3090 will result in a too significant FPS drop I fear in the games I play (Truck sims, Elite D., RPG’s @vorpX), or I’d have to reduce graphics quality which isn’t an option for me, neither. So in the first instance, I just want to get as close as possible to constant 75 FPS - increase of FOV or SS probably is something for the graphic cards of 2024/25
Nevertheless I am still hesitating a bit and curious about
- reviews and benchmarks of the 6800 XT with Pimax HMD’s, especially 8K-X and in comparison to a 2080 (Ti);
- reviews and benchmarks of the upcoming 6900 XT begin of December. It still might be I can get almost the 3090’s performance for a cheaper price, and all of my games except Dirt Rally 2.0 need Parallel Projection and therefore don’t work with FFR or any other special NVidia VR feature… so… no real extra benefit from NVidia on this point at the moment…
