5k or 8k for video, the elephant in the room

I will probably be using more than 80% of my time in the headset to watch 180/360 degrees 3D movies (yes, adult content). I have a disability that makes it impossible for me to meet women so this aspect of VR has really changed my life and made it possible for me to experience a taste of what most normal people are experiencing here in life. I am really happy that Pimax is improving the technology so this experience will hopefully be even better for me.

Anyways, this seems to be a controversial topic as it has been discussed very little by the testers, and what they have said has not given me confidence that they have thoroughly tested this aspect of the headset. It makes me sad that MRTV joked the question away in his AMA, and SweViver also joked about it pretending to not know the name of the video he had watched. I know this is something that is really important for some of us.

Could any of the testers please make a serious comment about this? I have an early backing number and have to make a decision soon. What I would be interested to know is how big is the difference between the 8k and 5k+ watching these kinds of videos? Could they possible take pictures through lens of a video like they have done for games? What would you chose in my position? I also like to demo VR to people who visit me so if the difference is very small I will probably go for the 5k+ as I doubt I can play many games on the 8k on my rig.

Please use a video like Czech VR 183 5400x2700 when testing as this is a free video from the studio who has the best technical quality on their videos.

Thanks a lot!

Mate, SweViver said on forum and ama that the 8K is best for this. Thanks mrtv though it’d be good to get another view.

It’s been said a few times for videos 8K is better because of the SDE but for games where you want decent graphics all over the place 5K+ is better. Also FPS is the issue (8k can look just as sharp with higher Pitools but games need to render each little bit of graphics and effects). I think that’s not a problem therefore for just playing vids.

See what mrtv comes back with, but until then I’d say all indications are 8K for that.

I know you are thorough… And I suspect your gonna test it over and over again  I’m liking your dedication Sébastien

Thank you so much! It really means a lot to me.

Also, I know that SweViver said 8k was best for videos, but it would be good to know a bit more details like how much better, why and how he tested it, because there might be a big difference depending on the video etc.

Another advantage of the 8K in this application its “warmer” LCD color. That would help make skin tones more vibrant.

Also, have you truly given up on real women? I know of a woman (of good background) who went on “missions of mercy” to help a quadriplegic friend. This was a man (nice guy) who interacted with the world by typing (on a BBS, years ago) by blowing through a straw.

There might be options you haven’t considered.

@George would understand; he helps people with disabilities and his interest in Pimax is how VR can improve lives. He might not have considered this use of VR.

Thank you for your positive comments. Unfortunately I live in a very small place (have to, because family live here and they help me a lot), so there are not a lot of women here to begin with. I have tried some online dating, and it is nice to have someone to write with, but no luck meeting any. Maybe in the future when VR is more developed I can at least meet real people through VR and maybe take it from there. Got to keep the hopes up!

I will be spending ~80% on VR180 or 3D movies (not adult) shot with my 3D camera (Lenovo Mirage), so it’s very important for me as well. I know you have the Lenovo Mirage camera as well. I can give you a tip: in SkyBox player you can change the Zoom to zoom out and the clarity will be MUCH BETTER. I find good quality VR180 videos the most entertaining experiences in VR right now because most games don’t have realistic graphics yet. So please treat this very seriously. I can recommend you this awesome 3D movie - YouTube You have to download it with the 4kdownloader program, in the mkv format at 4K. It runs very well in the SkyBox player in cinema mode. You can also try some VR180 videos from the Amaze VR app. If you need help I can assist you. Good luck and thank you very much for your effort. I really appreciate it.

@flobv dude, sorry but if you are using the skybox player (which has BY FAR THE WORST playback quality even with SS, best intuitive control though) I doubt that you can test anything in a reliable way.

@noro Well I tried also Deo VR and I found SkyBox better and more comfortable to the eyes , no eye strain. What better player would you recommend ?

Eye strain is very strange and should not happen at all with DEO which is is a great install and forget player. (Sounds like you have settings issues) Which VR device are u using at the moment? If you are on Oculus try whirligig especially if you look at your own footage, loads of options take a lil to get the knack of it though. (fortunately the dev has tutorials on YT) It is also worth checking out if you on another brand HMD but I discovered some bugs that are not existent on Oculus devices.

Hands down best picture quality is still simple player vr. U’ll need the latest LAV codec to play 5k, 6k. Anything else should work right away. @Enopho has found a free link https://simple-vr-video-player.en.softonic.com/
otherwise it’s around 6 bucks on steam

Again we are not talking % in comparison to sky box, we are talkes MULTIPLES in picture quality!

Since I got the Oculus GO I don’t use any other headset for watching videos. Before I was using the Oculus Rift. I will check if Simple player or whirligig is available for GO.

Has anyone tried THIS tool which allegedly increases video resolution ?

Best whishes, i really understand the situation. Best of luck👍
