HP Reverb with a resolution of 2160x2160 RGB per eye should clearly be slightly superior to Pimax 4K 1920x2160 per eye with upscaling.
8KX and 8K + are not inferior (and somewhere even surpass) the HP Reverb in clarity and SDE, as I noticed from the current comparisons through the lens.
Accordingly, 8K + and 8KX should be better than Pimax 4K, in any aspect.
Of course, I want to compare directly with Pimax 4K.
Hope @Sweviver someday makes this comparison.
(Maybe he still hasn’t got Pimax 4K?)
Awesome thanks for the help and I definitely look forward to some further comparisons. Might wait to see if an 8k+ or 8kx comes up used eventually vs jumping on the 5k+ or 8k right now.
That is difficult to say as there are so many other improvements that you might not be as bothered by a bit of downgrade in static image quality. For example myself? I am quite happy overall as the quality drop is not overbearing like going from p4k to og vive and og rift.
Yes some tough decisions ahead. There is also a reverb for sale locally with controllers for $650 that is kind of tempting to have 6DOF tracking similar clarity and a higher resale down the line when it’s time to upgrade.
I would kind of lean towards that over the 5k+ with nolovr which I’d take over the 8k I think. The fact that the artisan is also available now for about the same price makes it tougher. I think going to the larger FOV would make it much harder to go back to something with less but am also worried I will be disappointed with picture quality. The 8kx would definitely be the best but not sure I can justify double the money right now.
I will definitely keep my eyes open for an event around Toronto area to try them out. From my research it looks like if you can deal with the intricacies of owning a pimax and are mainly playing seated Sims vs room scale VR there simply won’t be a better option any time in 2020.
How about waiting for 5K Super?
New housing, 180hz, MAS included, just $100 difference. I think this is a better solution if you want MAS.
BTW, is 8K still available? It was discontinued a while ago AFAIK.
Modular Audio Strap. It’s an adjustable ring of hard plastic with foam inserts. The MAS is not yet ready to ship, so headsets currently only include the “cloth strap”.
Hi @Century , i can make a comparison, unfortunatly it’s different when trying them, i have the 8k+ and have owned the 4k and Reverb version 2.
Clarity wise the 8k+ is on par with the 8k, so not as good as the p4k and the Reverb although the SDE is better then the two. I hope pimax will improve the upscale algoritm just as the 8k, wich gained in clarity over new pitool versions.
The reverb wins significant in clarity over the p4k when supersampled, steamvr 200% and target multiplier 2x, it’s just like a 1080p Monitor but the FOV is really bad…
Yes, the fact that the clarity of 8K + corresponds to the clarity of 8K really confuses me, because this should not be, given the better panel 8K +.
In theory, 8K + was supposed to win 8K without much strain.
At the same time, in all comparisons through the lens from Sweviver, we observed 8K + equality with HP Reverb in terms of clarity and SDE ( if not superiority).
Therefore, all this leads me into some confusion …
Given that the same panels are in 8KX, I am already beginning to fear for image quality
Yes i didn’t expect that also, but i wouldn’t be worried about the 8kx. As Sweviver and people say the sharpness is amazing on th X, it can only be the upscaler.
8K+ uses a hardware scaler on default. Although the panels are 4K, the game image is still 1440p. There is no way a rendered 1440p image can look equal or even close to a native 2160p image.
The 8K Plus’ strenght compared to 8K and 5K+ is SDE, which is more or less gone, and very similar to HP Reverb but with with twice the FOV and larger sweetspot.
Once you have 8K+ and 8KX side by side, you realise the massive difference. For me and many others (especially sim ppl) its a massive difference. For some people its just a minor upgrade, depending on what you really play, how important clarity is for you - and maybe most importantly, how good your real life vision is.
And btw, the 8KX looks identical to the 8K+ once you enable the scaler. Its all about native vs upscaled resolution.
Ive still today never tested the Pimax 4K to be honest.
At Shanghai office I was too busy and totally forgot it. In Florida we had no unit available
There could be many reasons:
Two canted panels probably makes the rendering different from one panel aligned straight to your eyes.
It still needs resolution optimisations (original 8K looked really bad compared to how it upscales today with later firmwares. Its looks way better now.)
You should adjust the MaxRecommendedResolution to at least 8192. Makes the image way sharper.
Also running anything lower than a RTX 2080 will make the SteamVR Dashboard look poor, unless you manually adjust the GPU values in the SteamVR config file to above 1500 on each row.
