3D Printed facial MOD for Pimax Low IPD Pinch Club members

So thanks to @peteo for posting info on 3D printed facial interface mod for the Pimax I finally begun experimenting with it on Pimax… https://community.openmr.ai/t/3d-printed-plastic-facial-interface-mod/17665

I have an IPD of 60.0 and I’ve had to use a lot of foam tape around the nose area of the Pimax along with VRcover Samsung OD+ cover to actually use my Pimax without pain. While the foam tape works, it looks horrible and it constantly needs repairs. Today my 3D printed facial MOD for the Pimax arrived and I began experimenting.

Above, I purchased the full set plus the individual parts. For the Pimax to work with my IPD and face, I need to angle the Pimax a little bit up… so I used blacktape and foam tape to link the full face mod to just the lower piece of the mod…

I then attached VRcover cushion to the modded mod onto my Pimax

NO MORE PINCHED NOSE PAIN!!! I played a couple of games for about an hour of time and no nose pain and good visual! Though I did now find that the VRcover facecusion too large and the original Pimax cushion too small. I’ll have to do some more experimenting. I have other face cushions to try but I’m also thinking about doubling the foam tap I used between the two 3D printed mods. Once I find the perfect layout, I’ll then I’ll finalize everything with glue because right now I’m using a lot of black tape to hold things together.

I’m really happy with the 3D printed facial mod!!! And I’m glad I bought the full face mod plus a second set in pieces for me to experiment.

You might also want to consider adding a counterweight to the back of the headset, as I’ve previously mentioned in this forum. I’m using my 8K with the original 14mm face-pad and straps with zero pressure on my nose and cheeks, with the simple addition of something you can easily cobble up. If it helps, there’s a professionally made VR counterweight available, which is also linked in my previous posts. If you can’t find it, just PM me and I’ll provide details (so I don’t clutter up the forum with repeated info).

I tried 14mm VIVE cushion then moved up to 18mm VIVE cushion. That helped but I still required a fair amount of foam tape around the nose area for comfort but also to angle the Pimax up a little to achieve best visual for me.

I read that and I’ve been meaning to try it. Now that I got the Pimax to where I want it with comfort and visual, I think that will be my next experiment. I’m using @Davobkk headstrap and that does a real good job of balancing and spreading the weight across the top of my head. The Pimax is already really light so with his headstrap, it feels to me like I’m wearing a baseball cap. But I’m still going to experiment with that principal of counterweight like you suggest. I think I’ll tape a wrench or two to the back to see if it improves comfort. If it does… I’ll check out that professional counterweight you mention. Thanks for the tips!!!

After a few more experiments I think I finally found what works best for me… I am now using VRcover’s original Odyssey face cushion and not the OD+ face cushion. I also cut a piece off the original Pimax face cushion to fill in the nose area. Presto… works great and looks good too. I used black tape all round the Pimax unit because I hate ANY light leak! Using a small cut of Pimax face cusion in the nose area also greatly reduces light leak under the nose. There is still some leakage but it’s very very little and I have no pain and still able to breathe through my nose comfortably… that’s also important for me

The end result is… no pain on the nose and optimal visual. With the 3D printed mod the HMD comes out a little but inward towards my face… and that feels better for me. I wish I had a 3D printer because now I know what I need, I could print that up as one piece instead of joining two 3D pieces together… but never the less… I’m very pleased. I’m no longer embarrassed showing guests my foam tape Pimax system. This looks much better than what I had before.

I find it mind boggling that Samsung puts out a cheap gearVR that just fits. For me at least . yet Pimax cant put out a 700 dollar HMD that fits the masses without a bunch of modifications. How much you wanna bet the HP reverb fits nearly everyone without these kinds of mods?
