Have a GTX 1070 so I’m looking at cards to upgrade to right now. There is no way I can spend 1200+ to get a 2080ti so my 2 options are 1080ti or 2080. Looking at bench marks it seems that the 1080ti is almost identical to the 2080 in most games (non VR) I have not really seen any VR bench marks comparing these 2 cards. Also the big wild card is whether the 2080 will also be able to use Pimax’s tenser core algorithm, what FPS increase it will provide (same as the 2080TI, or less?) and how many games will even benefit from it.
@PimaxVR Can we get some more info about the tenser core algorithm. All the games that it supports, what is it’s performance on 2080, 2080ti and eventually 2070?
The conclusion I came to is that it is best to wait.
I might not be able to run my all my games on a 1070, but I still don’t have enough information to make a good choice for GPU and I’m betting the prices will come down a lot in a few months.
I second the wait suggestion.I suspect that the 2080 will be a better option, but only after the prices drop to more sensible levels (and they should drop faster than the Ti versions because Nvidia is making more of these chips because TSMC is bottlenecked and the 2080 has a smaller die). Overall, I think DLSS will improve the performance of the 2080s substantively, but maybe not for VR (but you’re still going to play regular games, right?). I’m not holding my breath for decent frame in any ray tracing game at any resolution higher than 1080p though.
I think the conclusion of this article is sound (also, I rather like the PCB & cooling design of Asus cards):
I would go with the 2080 just for the ability to use the variable rate shading on games that support it. As far as DLSS in VR I believe it should work in theory but don’t quote me on that.
More benefit to it than just DLSS. One VR game supports VRS and you get a nice benefit from that. Also 4 quadrant distortion control, lossless memory compression and a host of other things that can benefit VR.
IF the 2080 and 1080ti were the same price it would be a no-brainer. My suggestion is to wait for a nice selection of AIB 2080’s as they are cheaper and potentially better. In the next month or so there will be a lot of them to choose from and the delta between the two less.
I think the 2080 is a complete waste of money… but that’s only my 2 Cent.
Even the 2080ti is not thaaaat far better than the 1080ti, at least considering the price, but
I get if Enthusiast want the best and are willing to pay more than ist worth just to get 20%? extra.
You will get “cheap” offers of the 1080ti new and even more off if you buy it used.
To get a 2080 used is not probable right know, since nobody is reselling it with a little off.
I suppose the 2080 is ± same than 1080ti in terms of performance.
Don’t get if someone wants to pay double for most likely almost the same performance…
Well, and to wait….not sure about that… look how long the 1080ti is out and it just dropped the price recently a bit due the introduction of the RTX series. My bet is on non significant price drops in the next two years.
And because of the high Prices of the RTX series the 1080ti also most likely won’t drop any further.
So get a used (better non mining raped) 1080ti and be glad to have saved a shitload of money.
I have the GTX1080 … while I am going to wait a little longer for more reviews to make a definite decision, I’m fairly certain that the unless the 2080’s becomes significantly cheaper (doubtful), I’m going to purchase a used 1080TI on ebay and wait for the RTX3080. The 2080’s don’t appear be worth the cost for marginally added speed. It’s like upgrading from the VIVE to the VIVE PRO… it just doesn’t make sense!
Just looking at the Memory Express here in Canada and the only reason the 1080ti is cheaper than the 2080 is because it is $150 off(Unless going for a blower). Also now that the 1080ti are not being made anymore they only carry 3 different ones where as a month ago there were at least a dozen different ones to choose from.
Edit* Newegg Canada seems to have a better selection, probably because they are an American company.
If the price is comparable then you have better VR support on 2080, DLSS and RTX, plus VirtualLink, which are all a bit dubious features. On 1080 Ti you have 11 GB memory, which is not dubious, but I have not heard yet about the game which would require it, and already proven design with variety of cooler options. Long term 2080 has more appeal, but I am afraid that 2080 is shortlived - new features are not coming with enough performance to justify their existence. Even 2080 Ti is questionable from that point of view.
That’s why I’m considering E-bay… I would buy a used 1080TI which is far cheaper… I’m counting on others to upgrade to the 2080 so I can purchase their old 1080TI cheap!!! Besides, I’m also going to have to purchase a VIVE just for the controllers as well. I could wait until Q2 of 2019 for the controllers but since there’s no guarantee that Pimax will make that ETA… I ain’t chancing it considering Pimax’s history on accurately making ETA’s is kinda dim!!!
If the prices and availability were similar, I’d say go with the 2080. The extra memory capacity on the 1080Ti rarely matters, but they have similar bandwidth. The multi view rendering is crippled to only X differences so only works in the not ideal coplanar mode for Pimax; the 2080 should be capable of independently angled multi view rendering. Features like the variable rate shading will help with a few titles at some point in the future (rumour has it, that’s actually supported in In Death). The more heavily advertised features of ray tracing (too slow) and tensor core based resampling (mostly advertised as DLSS or denoising) are less relevant, but might help at some point; at worst, ignore them. Either way, though, you’re likely to find better prices and perhaps have more information (including upcoming support) if you hold off a while.
