Will there be a retail version of the 8k X

While the 8k is pushing the HMD envelope in many ways, on paper it doesn’t seem to m ake a big leap in terms of image quality(2x resolution but also about 2x FoV as the 4k).Unfortunately I was too late to back it, but I’d like to purchase it as soon as it becomes available. Is Pimax considering the 8k X to be more of an experimental product or a likely candidate for mass production?

@deletedpimaxrep1 @Matthew.Xu

They have said there will be a retail version of the 8k-X timeline wise? I would guess maybe 2019 q3 or q4; it might be later or earlier than my guess.

I have added 2 pimax team member pokes who can answer better.

As an 8KX backer id like to know too. In the survey I asked for an 8K to be “loaned” to me as soon as that was available but after having tried the Samsung Odyssey and being sorely dissapointed im pretty sure the 8K is the minimum resolution id accept and 8KX being the sweetspot (Yes ill need a 3080ti).

I ordered the 8KX and I have 0 clue if it will even happen now.

It’s a straight-forward modification to the 8K, so I’d say that if the 8K ships (and I think it will), the 8KX will almost certainly follow. I don’t think you need to worry any more than the rest of us. :slight_smile:

@Rage @generic if Pimax is able to stick to its original timeline you as, 8K-X backers, should have your units 3-6 months after the 8K model ships. With the 8K under development they probably don’t want to and PR guidlines prohibit them from giving out any specific dates, which is understandable to me but certainly frustrating to others.

@Heliosurge, thanks for modifying the post. I don’t know what Pimax’s strategy is for the 8K-X, but assuming the first batch of 8K-Xs is delivered in 2018, it seems unlikely to me that the company would release a model with identical hardware 6-9 months later without any further innovation.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to come to a good conclusion about what Pimax’s intention with the 8K-X really is. Either they are willing to take a financial hit, releasing it to a small communiity of backers for PR reasons and/or to gather information for future headsets. Or they are hoping that there is a big enough market share of early adopters who are willing to buy it at this point in time.

All I would hope for as an answer would be if the 8K-X model is intended for public release (yes/no/maybe).

With no mention of a 4K-X and only small upgrades from other companies, the only longshot in terms of providng a better headset with improved image quality could be by Varjo, Q4 2018(probably very expensive and not for gaming).

I’m rooting for Pimax to deliver an outstanding product, so I can upgrade from my current 4K model.

The 8k-X is being developed as requested by the community. Due to current gpu strength it requires top consumer cards out currently. 1080 ti min to possibly sli.

I would be curious on Amd Vega Frontier & 56/64 cards.

This 8k-X KS release is more intended atm as developer. They have said they intend to release the X later for consumers. So unlike the 5k/8k the 8k-X KS model will not be the same as the consumer release.

Now @deletedpimaxrep1 might be able to give an estimated release if all goes well after 5k/8k models have green light to start shipping to backers. I would guess the 8k-X consumer version might release in 3 to 6 months after the 8k-X KS assuming 1080 ti or next gen gpus able to drive this crazy beast.

Edited possible timeline. Consumer 8k-X might be out 3 to 6 months after the 8k-X KS model release.
