The oculus cv2 that was announced a while back would be at least 170 fov, and with vari-focal lenses.
That would most likely launch next year Q2 no later than q3.
Pimax will need to have a polished device both in hardware and software by then.
A very tall order.
I think as a pusher of VR, Pimax have already achieved a shift in the industry.
A year ago HTC, Oculus, Google and others turned their sights at the budget or mobile market, to increase the much needed adoption. Now that the hardware is done, they are now talking about wider FOV and higher resolution as their next goal. That I imagine is largely due to the Pimax 8K threat otherwise they would have all made small increments in features to sustain profit and recoup all the R&D that has gone before. Pimax went straight to 8K and 200 Fov, the max limit forcing their hand. Equally, I think the Pimax 8K is impacting sales of the Vive Pro as people want to see if a huge leap is possible.
In addition to Pimax pushing the industry past small leaps, there are many side products and spin-offs being developed to overcome the current tech short comings. e.g. Variable focus, retina resolution, eye tracked rendering.
However hardware is not the #1 driving force behind VR. That is software, software and content is always king. As we know there are many gamers around today with high end kit but the VR/AR software is not at a level to make them switch over. Including myself.
Also the OS’s we use need to be fully VR/AR too and Microsoft and Apple will not get serious for another 5+ years or until the hardware really revolutionizes our productivity and entertainment.
But as a gen 1 owner I am looking for something a bigger leap to upgrade to.
I mean most company would try to maximize their profit and reduce their development cost. Instead of release developed tech all at once they do it slowly over a few iterations. Especially when they all thinking the same thing, longer lasting streams of money. Until someone different comes along and really shakes things up.
I wont expect 8k to be the perfect hmd, but it will set the bar high enough the big brands will have to scrap their current plans and really bring out the beef.
Yes, I have been following SID Display Week for tidbits of info on that. They did show the same high PPI panel but it was on a 70" transparent flexible panel. Very impressive. There is a Youtube video floating about that shows it. This is the same joint tech (I think) that will be used for VR and I predict a single 220 degree wraparound screen that targets both AR and VR. The advances of visual technology is really hotting up.
We also have Oculus Connect coming up in a few months which they may announce a Rift 2 and most likely a Santa Cruz update too.
the Pimax 8K/8K-X is definitely making competitors announce early developments on the public forum.
What I think many miss. Is what some have said here as well.
Oculus & Htc(valve) brought VR into the spotlight & spent a fortune to do so. They made it easier for those who followed & made headsets.
Pimax could have focused on competing with the existing headset Market & had an easy winner in making a 4k v2 with the goodies in the 8k at more standard FoV & a much wider gpu support.
What they are making targets high end users whom want the next real step in VR. But yes they are no longer under the cover of anonymity. A quality release before the hounds catch up is a must.
LG has been hanging back with there Ultragear steamvr headset & guaranteed it will likely be much more of a step up over Vive Pro (and the Pro Audio will work lol)
I think I had a few words on a different post highlighted when I clicked reply to Pimel, I then changed those words to what I actually wanted to quote in my comment.
Where I think the Pimax UltraFoV headsets could be perceived as competition is against expensive ones like HeroVR.
While HeroVR will have top notch optics & other higher end things for $5000-10k with 1-2k/year maintenance fees. If the 5k/8k is as they say good enough for those using headsets like HeroVR. Then some will branch off for a more affordable headset.
I don’t know if this headset will really change the VR schedule that Oculus or others set out for themselves. The demands on computing power are so high when using high res screens and large fov that it doesn’t fit in this time frame for them to lure in a very high amount of users.
Pimax is great for us enthusiasts with a fat enough wallet but it won’t draw in casuals and that’s what VR needs to really take off I think
On the spot, I’ve just check all new things in the steam VR section and except for beat saber not so much AAA/quality content… for the time been VR seem just like 3D in TVs. After spiking VR software market is stalling. Audience is low and dev cost high not a great recipe for success.
Unless they inject a lot of cash 100million+ I don’t see Pimax been a major player in VR, the 8K is not a mainstream product.
Assuming everything goes well, Oculus and Htc would have two options. They could match the specs of their gen 2 headset with the Pimax 8k (or atleast come close). Or, they could compromise with lower fov, but higher pixel density. These are just some of my guesses though. Who really knows what Oculus and Htc would do. They could be partnered with a display company, and end up bringing some crazy curved screen headset. Who really knows. It’s all just speculation.
Developers are afraid to do vr games and with news that vr is dying again will not help.
I just dont understand why developers think that all players want to play games with vr controllers and full room scale. Why dont do more vr seated games like deus ex mankind , dying light, dark souls, shadow warrior, divinity original sin 1 and 2. Normal full games with option to vr.
That IMO is the best way forwards for developers. Normal games that support both Monitor and VR. Not Ark Survival Evolved or Subnautica VR which are after thoughts and poorly supported but a decent VR option.

I think VR is still a niche market. Until more headsets are out there, we won’t see a lot of new games in VR, except for flight and driving games. Enough players in those markets have VR and it’s a much more compelling experience.
