VR News for 2024

@Atmos Sure, Xtal also managed to provide a well-performed wide FoV, and even the Vision series of Pimax got it done to an acceptable degree. Yet, it does seem to come with more challenges than normal FoV because otherwise one of the players in the 4K per eye headset market would have said 30 PPD suffices, let‘s add our unique selling point at providing for a 140 degrees hFoV.

I believe wide FOV can cause more motion sickness. It also causes more game compatibility issues, because some games aren’t designed with a large FOV in mind. Also if highly canted displays are a requirement of large FOV, that is even more complicated, and game developers need to get involved to get the best quality out of it. That would only happen for the VR company with the most marketshare.

Crystal and crystal light here. 103 horizontal which is the maximum rendered fov.

Problem is, most of the experienced Pimax users already know how the super wide hFoV of 150\160 works for them, because they have or had a Pimax Vision series headset which offered exactly that. So I am not sure if Pimax would be afraid of users experiencing this kind of issues, because they already know that while these surely transpired at the time in some cases, most users and the (vast) majority of games did cope well with the demand of super-wide FoV headsets.

Yeah that is crazy bad for them to do. The base model isn’t really that appealing at $1900 us and around $2600 us.

At the end a lot depends on implementation. If they implemented many of the aspects which make a good headset in good quality, then it may be better although specs could suggest that e.g. a Super is super(ior).

But the first round review with Brad, etc. did not go without bruises, as I recall, so will it be worth the price tag ? I don’t know. Varjo also has hefty price tags, and in their case while the hardware seemed to have been good, the software spoilt the party somewhat so it is difficult to make suggestions on these niche highest end headsets.
