The game itself has been around since the 80’s. It doesn’t matter which specific release we are talking about. We are talking about the mechanics of core gameplay. The GAME of Elite has been around for a very long time. The graphics etc might have gotten better with each release, and some depth of play added, but no, it wasn’t a game which was developed for VR…
Not to mention that Elite Dangerous was released on 16 Dec 2014 and the Oculus Rift didn’t make an appearance until 28 March 2016 - almost a year and a half later! So “promising” future VR implementation has absolutely nothing to do with the original design of the game.
Elite was a very good game LONG before VR rolled around.
Your best advice is to go to the Elite Forums if you want a review of PVP vs PVE. Its a “rich” topic to say the least…
But for me, I’ld be happy to play with other people (PVP) if it wasn’t for the fact that I had to play with other people.
Ganking aside, folks will do pretty selfish stuff (like hogging the pads at outposts). Unfortunately, the people that suck are much more memorable than the people who don’t. I play PVE in a private personal group or a public group (mobius)…
I don’t get what’s with the attitude. Aren’t we all friends here? The only thing Elite of 84 has in common with E:D is lore, a few basics and ideas. “The game” has not been around since 84. One game came out in 84, then others came out… and 35 years later here we are. Old and playing the fourth game.
Dont just take my word for the dev for VR topic. Here’s a video where DBOBE himself tells you that E:D was developed for VR. Not Oculus, mind you, but VR. Oculus came along, but VR existed long before that. Elite: Dangerous - David Braben Interview - YouTube
edit: That’s all I have to say on this topic. This won’t lead anywhere
When we are talking about game design, it doesn’t matter which version your are referring to. Whether it be the original Elite of the 80’s or the more recent Elite Dangerous.
The game was originally designed without any concept of VR. The original game concept is much the same as it has always been. You fly around and trade/fight/mine/Run missions from the cockpit of your ship(s). That basic game concept has been with us from day 1. That is how the game has been designed. That is why the game has been such a long-term success. The VR component was only recently added.
Regardless of which release of the game you want to focus on, the underlying GAMEPLAY is basically the same - and it has NOTHING to do with VR…
That’s easy: None. Combat in ED can be very expensive, particularly if your combat skills are not top-notch. I mostly play Solo, but since I’m on the Distant Worlds 2 expedition, I’m playing in a non-combat explorer’s group (Fleet Comm).
True, but VR makes the game a lot better, without really changing the game itself. If you haven’t seen this funny video (nsfw) it’s quite a good take on ED in VR…
Odd: I find a reference to DW2 from October 2018 but nothing about anything current. What the heck is DW2? Is it a current event or a map that anyone can follow at any point? But FleetComm is apparently mostly filled up because of it? I’m a bit confused… <well, nothing new there!>
Between FleetComm and Mobius (sp?), it’s nice to find a couple of pve groups, thank you!
DW2 is an expedition to the far side of the galaxy, to a place call Beagle Point, named after Erimus Kamzel (the explorer)'s ship (The Beagle) to reach the spot, where (before engineering) you could go no further (away from Sol). A few years ago, I went on the original DWE, which took me something like 5 months to get there and back. I barely made it; my ship’s hull was at 6%.
It’s a bit late to join; I should reach Beagle’s Point in about a week, after ~10 weeks of flying between 2 and 4 hours (most days).
Sounds like fun but it looks as if sign ups were officially closed on Feb 17th, so I missed it. Never knew they had anything like it!
Thanks for the info!
Some of the locations are quite beautiful. In this shot, I’m leaving a planet inside a bright blue nebula. The stretching is due to this being a left-eye-view from my 8K.
Thanks! That’s my favorite ship, an AspX, “Into the Black”. Many players think the Asp is an ugly ship, but it has the best view of any cockpit.
I’ve been flying it mostly, since the original DWE, even though I own a dozen or so other ships. I’ve upgraded it with purple engine exhaust, purple lasers (which I hardly ever use), tailfins, and an iridescent paint job.
I’ll share a few other recent shots…
This is a neutron star with jet cones that can super-charge your FSD (an engine power up)…
