Wait do the glasses frames that come with the Kickstarter not come with prescription lenses ?
Its called the Customized Prescription VR Frame.
To me that sounds like it comes with prescription lenses, otherwise it is not customized or prescription it’s just a lenseless magnetic frame.
That is really misleading. What use is a frame with no lenses?
They should partner with Zenni.com to product the frames and include lenses. You can order a prescription pair of glasses from Zenni for $6.
Because of the bulk order Zenni could probably make the prescription VR frame custom for every backer for as little as $4-5.
Pimax should definitely do this. I’m assuming most believed they were receiving prescription frames.
Then why write the word CUSTOMIZED and the word PRESCRIPTION ?
Customized means there is something unique about each pair (…the prescription lenses).
Prescription means that it has your eye prescription to allow you to see things just like a person with perfect eyesight would.
It’s a customized frame for the HMD. It’s used for prescription lenses. The name can seem deceiving but do you really expect expensive prescription lenses to be free?
No I expect them to put $6 prescription lenses in there from Zennioptical.com
You can order prescription glasses for 6.95. They are also located in China like Pimax and if Pimax wanted to order nearly 6000 units I’m sure they would give them a discount and they could include Prescription Frames as the stretch goal for less than $6 dollars a customer.
These glasses are $6.95 USD and are prescription glasses.
Prescription lenses aren’t “expensive” if you purchase them from a manufacturer, they are a total rip off if you buy from your optometrist or a 3rd party.
As someone who has used Zenni multiple times I highly recommend them and believe they would be a great partner to Pimax. They would be able to handle this item (and stretch goal) without needing many resources from Pimax and have the facilities to make the frames and lenses cheaper and faster then Pimax could
So you expect a VR company to take everyone’s prescription and personalize every frame for each order? Do you think they have that kind of staff? I don’t. I guess they could create a site for that and partner with Zenni but I’d rather they spend their resources on the hesdset itself before doing that. Pretty sure they’re not shipping those frames until after the headsets go out anyway, so there’s time. If it’s “only” $6.95 then i don’t see why you can’t do it on your own, since you seem to know how to do it. Some people’s prescriptions might call for special types of lenses, so it won’t be that cheap. Also keep in mind the lenses are going to be bigger than normal glasses, so I don’t think it’ll be as cheap as you think. Zenni would have to do extra work to make something that unique.
They are sending out a survey anyways, I’m one section in the survey couldn’t be enter you prescription ? They could forward the results to Zenni, give Zenni a headset and tell them to make a mold and fulfil all of these orders. It’s little to know work for Pimax. Also, it doesn’t have to ship with the headset fine to be delayed until after.
Also we cant just do it on our own because Zenni doesn’t have a Pimax 8K frame designed. If they made a design for the headset we could order our own I would be more than happy to pay the extra $15-20 for it.
I understand that it’s bigger than most normal lenses but they are glasses maker I don’t think it should be difficult. Lenses could be small, large, round, square, rectangular… Zenni is a company who knows how to make quality frames and lenses on the cheap.
Ya I’m not expecting Pimax to learn how to make glasses frames and lenses, similar to them not developing the majority or their modules like hand and eye tracking.
I think its a terrific idea if they could partner with a company like Zenni who has been making frames and lenses for years.
The one issue is that people may have complex prescriptions that would be more expensive for Zenni to produce.
But if they give Zenni a headset and Zenni designs a frame for the Pimax, I (and I assume many other backers) would be more than happy to pay the $10-25 to have the pair shipped to me that I can insert into my headset and has my prescription.
Or if they have to pay for the frame (due to legal concerns), they could give us a Zenni coupon for the free frame and we would just pay the price of the prescription lenses we require and Zenni would ship it directly to our doors and would not have to bother Pimax or use any Pimax resources.
Also they don’t need to be shipped with our headsets they can be shipped afterwards.
I feel like I have a great idea here (or I can just be going crazy…)
An idea in regards to your post might be that once the designs are finalized. Perhaps the team could release a pic with lens size details for fitting frames.
Size thickness limits/shape. Then a user could contact a lens provider of choice to have lenses made for the frames.
The word “customized” modifies “prescription”, not “frame”. I don’t think it was misleading on purpose, but another example of miscommunication due to the language barrier. They really would have benefited from a native English speaker on their team for the campaign. A lot of people are expecting to give their prescriptions in the backer survey…
Oh I don’t think it was misleading on purpose.
I fully understand the language barrier many of us had with the Pimax staff, but it seemed like their campaign was written and designed by an English speaker.
All of the Description of the campaign and the videos on it were in pretty perfect English.
Good to know even if I don’t succeed in a Partnership between Pimax and Zenni, at least I saved a few people thousands of dollars in glasses for the rest of their lives.
Zenni is a terrific site and I highly recommend it.
Yes you could buy the cheapest lenses that are included with each frame, but I recommend to step up a few tiers to the high index lenses, a few tiers lower than the best lenses. I have purchased 3 pairs from Zenni one was $6 and the other two were $60-70. The higher end glasses were beautiful and just as good as my glasses from my local shop.
Plus, once you have your prescription, you can do it from home.
Yup, due to the language barrier the wording may have mislead us a bit.
Although I would be more than happy if they partnered with Zenni and let Zenni design the frame and lenses.
They could even sell them on Pimax store and orders would be forwarded to Zenni to fulfill.
at that price you should definitely keep pushing it as an idea. i would 100 percent buy prescription lenses off the pimax store for 20-30 bucks. thats a nice slice of profit for both parties. it would be conditional on the lenes being removable and insert-able to the later eye tracking frame though.
