Somnium VR-1 Q3 2023

Very interesting to see what lands, 136 FOV is difficult to achieve without canting (index 5 degrees per display, Crystal 10 degrees per display) or sacrificing stereo overlap.

136 degree because you have to come closer to the lenses lol.

True. Guess we have to wait for new user reviews to see what people get and if there’re any trade offs.

So d you get to try Wearality Sky? A bit of a juggling act but they had claimed a 150 wide using just 1 screen (mobile phone)

I tried to find one with no luck a few years or more after it released

Speaking of ā€œtrade off,ā€ does Somnium accept Pimax 8KX trade off? LOL.

After losing interest in this one, it has definitely grabbed my attention again. Can’t be bothered reading Arthur’s blog, is he inviting Brad back again?

yes all youtubers are invited to come back and check out the updated version.

Yikes, first production run in April at the earliest.

I’m not sure if that’s for the base model without eye tracking or all models at the same time.

At this point I wish Somnium had stuck to one model only and included everything for $1800.

Following. I hope this is the wide or ā€œwiderā€ FOV we have all been waiting for without puting up with Pimax antics.

Current website has not altered, still is 125° HFoV, so just rumors about potential edge cases.

Half way through March and not even a date for Somnium Connect. I doubt it will be in March which means another delay.

With DPVR announcing a high end HMD in April and now rumours of a Pico4 S Somnium are going to have to hit the floor running with the VR-1 if they are going to see any return on their time and money.

Agreed, somnium connect will be delayed AGAIN. This is more and more looking like Pimax. Although if it was Pimax, they would already have had a ā€˜release event’ and we’d be waiting for the ā€˜final release’ LOL

I thought one of the reasons making the VR-1 was to have total control of production but who knows what the delay is. Could be 1 screw. Lol

It’s getting to the point where you have a 6 month window to get a HMD out before some one else pulls out their trump card. Has the VR-1 window already passed?

I only can guess, it“s the Apple Vision, where all competitors IMHO failed to deliver.
You are right, one need a trump ccard. If a me-too product, then one need to have at least something to differentiate like price, no ecosystem vendor lockin, HFoV and so on.
The Crystal is for sure a competitor in a way, like some others, but no real trump IMHO.

It remains out of my scope, ~120 HFoV is WAY TO LITTLE, regardless what this guy is telling about any other features.
Still seems improvement regarding immersion, which is good.

Pico 4 S is an optimized version of Pico 4, you really think that’s gonna compete with VR1? Totally different market imo

Compete is what way? Sales? Performance? Value for money?

With AVP, XR4, BSB, Crystal Light in Q2, Quest Pro2 later this year and the PicoS I’m not sure where the VR-1 fits as its really expensive and needs more add-ons to bring it up to Crystal specs.

The VR1 comes across as a passion project rather than a viable product tbh. I hope they can keep going and make more interesting highend headsets but I also really struggle to see how it could be feasible. The crypto aspect probably funds it for the most part, so maybe the economics of it don’t need to be as tight as normal, it also probably acts as a way to pump their crypto also so perhaps the real profit margin is their rather than selling headsets.
