Setting for IPD

Hi,
First, my Pimax arrived yesterday and I was able to get it working with Piplay with no problems. However, I must say that the Pimax logo image in the headset is not suitable for setting up the unit for best operation and actually just shows the poor quality of the lenses used.
All the stars a little way out from the logo are very distorted and show rainbow colours just like a very cheap telescope. This is disappointing.

Second, I would like to suggest that the IPD software needs to be very much improved to include a grid of dark lines so that adjustments made can be seen in the headset.
I have set it to 50 which is the lowest setting as this seems to give the best picture, but it is still not perfect and values lower than 50 may help if that was possible.

Also, I normally wear weak glasses and have found that the image is very much out of focus without them on and is still not focused even with my glasses on.
This indicates that the lenses used in the unit should be able to be changed to accommodate different vision characteristics with different people.
To get an almost focused image, I have to wear very strong glasses, but it is still not perfectly focused which means that having a 4K high resolution screen is wasted.

Is there another way to be able to adjust focus or is this unit really only for people with perfect vision?
Surly this can be fixed. Is it possible to get additional lenses?

For me, I would be very happy with the unit if the focus issue can be improved. Everything seems to work ok, including SteanVR.

I will be interested to get some other users comments and any advice.

One more thing. Do I need to install any other software to be able to play Oculus games?

Thanks, regards, Luke

The focus issue cannot be solved. Its a hardware issue. The Pimax is a lemon and good luck trying to use it for more than 10 minutes. Send it back while its still under warranty

I’ll be getting mine Friday, and I’m going to see if I can do a lens replacement on them. From what I understand the lenses have had quality issues because of some of the “Anti-blueray” coating. So nicer lenses that are a little less convex are probably desired by a good amount of people in the community. I think this HMD has potential, but it seems it was put out as a bit of a beta, granted it took oculus multiple iterations to get a stable product. I think with some more work on the software/firmware and some mild adjustments, this could be a fantastic headset.

If you can make one that actually runs 4k with display port, can mechanically change the ipd and software that actually works I’ll buy one off you. In other words if you can make an Oculus/HTC Cv2

Hi Guys and thanks for your replies.
If this product is to be successful in the market then something will have to be done to allow focus to be adjusted for different vision.

To me, it appears that the engineers were more concerned about getting the widest field of view rather than the best quality image and the lenses were fixed in that position.
This needs to be changed so that lenses can be exchanged. Pimax could sell a kit of different lenses and so easily fix this problem.
Even very cheap ($20) Google Box VR units have adjustable or exchangeable lenses and so can produce a better focused image than the Pimax can at the moment.

I find it hard to believe that this unit in this form won any prizes at the 2016 show, unless it was just for build quality which is very good. However any person putting this unit on would not be able to see a focused image unless the unit that was displayed at the show was different and had some way to adjust the focus.

The Piplay software must be improved.
The IPD adjustment utility must be improved so that changes can be easily seen. A display of vertical lines would allow this.
I have a 4K PC monitor driven by a NV GTX1080 video card and Piplay sometimes has problems displaying properly. Also the download speed is VERY slow for getting the games and movies shown in the unit and keeps loosing connection with the server.
This is definitely a Piplay softwarre issue because I have a very fast cable internet connection.
Can these games, movies etc be downloaded directly from the Pimax web site? This may be a faster way to get content for the unit.

I will keep my unit because I believe that something can be done to make it better.
Pimax must work closely with the people that have purchased one of these units to get the product working satisfactorily otherwise the product and company reputation will suffer and the product will fail in the market.

The main thing that attracted me to this unit was that it is able to work with both Steam VR and Oculus games and programs and as far as I know, this is the only unit on the market that can do this and so has great potential, but Pimax must listen and look after its existing customers otherwise poor reviews will kill this product.

Customers will purchase the Pimax as long as they know that they will be supported.
I would really like to get some response from Pimax engineers about how we could move forward and resolve these issues.

Regards, Luke
PS. I’m in Melbourne Australia and would be interested in knowing if anyone else here as purchased a Pimax.

@LukeB

Thanks for your good support and suggestions!
and we will keep working hard to make this product more better. As we mentioned in another thread, we suspect it may relate to the mismatched lens holder, would you please help us to verify it? we will send you the sub-assembled lens houlder.

you can refer below infor
@all,
Thanks for your patient. we have received three batch(total 7 units) with center blur issue. all this units have been done detailed analysis, now we think we found all rootcuase, this
issue mainly comes from two reasons:

  1. 2 units’ lens coating has big issue.
  2. 5 units lens holder mismatched . we have two version lens with different materials:
version 1.0 is COP (opcital focus F0 is 34mm) , version 2.0 is PMMA K26A combined( optical focus F0 is 37mm). since version 1.0 and version 2.0 focus is different. so we using different height lens holder to match. that’s to say, version 1.0 lens must use lower holder, and version 2.0 lens must use higher holder. While this 5 units we found version 2.0 lens with lower holder. we think some older holders were mixed in new holder parts during assemble in the manufactory. we’re so sorry for this production issue. and all the lower holder parts have been well quarantined now.
After stock check in the factory, we believe that there’re about 2-3% units(20-30units) with mismatched lens holder were shipped to oversea markert. for myopia person, it won’t cause issue, but for normal sight person, this optics mismatched unit will cause center blur issue.
we’re sorry and we offer two solutions for this issue:
  3. send us your address, we privide two lens wih correct holder sub- assembled and assemble manual, then you guys could change the lens by yourselves.
  4. we’r trying to coordinate our sales channel to handle this issue.

If you guys have other better suggestions, pls tell us!
Thanks!

PimaxVR team.

Hi Luke. I bought a Pimax and had the same problems. Your best option is to send thing back an save your money for a true 4k headset when one of the big players release one. This is your typical chinese company selling click bait items that do not work. They put up some flashy marketing images but if you visited their headquaters you would realise how amature they really are. Their engineers are clearly a bunch of muppets and they arnt going to do anything to fix these problems. They will just keep selling as many broken units as they can

Hi Davobkk,
It is frustrating going through the learning curve procedure and I know that the Piplay software still needs a bit more work. Especially in the setting of the IPD.

Obviouslly if you purchased your unit a while ago, then I can understand why you are not happy. The software probably had even more issues than now.
However for me, apart from the focus issue, the unit has worked. BUT the focus problem is a product killer if it isn’t resolved.

The quality of the lenses must be improved to give a properly focused field of view. And focus must be able to be adjusted to suite the vision of different people.
I would suggest the the pimax developers also test the unit with people that wear reading glasses of different strengths.

I’ve only had my unit a few days and thanks to this forum and also the pimax support guys I’ve managed to get SteamVR and Oculus VR working. So in that respect the unit is now working well (and as long as I wear strong reading glasses to get the focus almost right).

As far as the focus issue is concerned, the pimax people have stated that they will send out a replacement lens sub-assembly to those that are having focus issues and I am satisfied with that.

I do believe that the pimax development engineers are working hard to get the product up to it’s full specifications (4K @ 60Hz) and improve the piplay software and I hope there will be improved versions available soon.

I have sent pimax my address and I hope the lens kit will arrive soon.
Until then, there is still lots for me to learn so I’ll stick at it.

Cheers, Luke

I’m with you Luke.
I’ve had my PimaxVR for just under 4 weeks now and apart from a slight focus issue it’s working very well for me in SteamVR.

I did have to switch to an Nvidia card from an AMD card though because any drivers above 16.9.2 causes a BSOD when using the Pimax.

SteamVR beta now supports Asynchronous Reprojection (Oculus ATW equivalent) which also only currently works with Nvidia cards. This has improved the VR experience overall by making things smoother.

Do you know what Serial number range is affected by this flaw?

I’m not 100% sure mine suffers from this, but the image could be clearer on mine. Maybe it’s just my eyes.

Hi Roland,
No I don’t know.
Perhaps the pimax guys may know, but if it was a production problem (mixing up the lenses) then they may only have discovered it recently.
Cheers, Luke
P.S For those interested. The are heaps of free VR games, etc, for all platforms from the WEARVR web site.

Hi PimaxVR,
Yes I will be happy to help resolve the focus issue.
Hopefully you received the email with my address and as soon as the lenses arrive, I will install them and report back with the results.
I look forward to receiving them soon.

Cheers,
Luke

LukeB,

I do also think this have big potential, and because that i ordered one for myself which should arrive next week.

The main reason why i didn’t buy htc vive or oculus rift (and I do have money for that) is because I think this guys can make something great which cost a lot cheaper than htc vive. I don’t know if they are improving it or not, but i hope so, they are.

Anyway, please let us know once you get lenses, that will clarify a lot of things.

Hi Lasco,
Good on you.
I to believe that this will be a great unit and I also think that if we (and other users) work with Pimax to resolve these issues, then we will all benefit.

We should remember that Oculus were working on the Rift for several years before they ended up with a unit ready to market and they probably had a large development team.
HTC also were working on the Vive for years as well, but didn’t make as much noise as Oculus in the media.

So I think that Pimax have done a good job so far and as long as they resolve these issues and keep improving the software and adding features, Pimax will be a winner.

I was considering a HTC Vive, but when I read many complaints from Steam users about very bad support, it put me off them.

VR is a new area and if companies have poor customer support, people won’t buy from them.
So far, I am happy with the support Pimax are providing by letting us know that they are working to fix customer concerns and keeping in touch with us.

Of course talk is cheap and it is results that count.

I’m happy to work with them if the want me to, to get the focus issue fixed to a satisfactory level.

I will post in this forum and let people know when the replacement lens assembly arrives and what the results are.

Cheers, Luke

I too find myself in this situation. I’ve got a pimax VR headset and find that the center of the view is blurry, more noticeable on the right side. I don’t wear glasses and have good vision, and also have had no trouble when trying the oculus and vive products. Have emailed support@pimaxvr.com and have had one response directing me to here. I’ve sent my address but it’s been over a week with no response.
Pimax! could you please respond! Other than the blurry center the product is GREAT! Would love to get the lenses sorted out, and am happy to make some changes if you can provide instructions!

Thanks

I"m using an RX480 with the last driver and i don’t have any BSOD.

When i watch 360 pictures the image is clear on 90% of the lens but the picture is low resolution.
I have a french cardboard the Homido V2 and the lens are smaller 4cm but clear and sharp in all directions.
About the focus i think that it will be for the next version and i wonder if they will keep the lens fixed and screen movable or the best if each lens will be movable independantly. I wonder what makes the vertical shadows that i can see.

The ipd works fine for me. It is set at 58, i have myopa and i’m a tall guy so big head. Don’t think that everybody needs 50.

Everybody knows what the next version should have and it’s new hardware. New lenses, focus setting, new screen (oled) with no ghosting and better colors. The power button should be next to the green/blue/red light.

See you next year. ;o)

PS : if you are able to provide new lenses with better quality let me know, i would like to change mines.

By the way perhaps the smooth picture is not a focus issue but due to the anti blue light system.

If you remove the anti blue light lenses the image will probably be more sharp.
Of course you will have to wear protection glasses.

You can see the anti blue light lenses here

How do you explain that the 360 pictures look very clear on 90% of the lens though they are low resolution pictures?
How do you explain that Unity Chan is very clear too and without ghosting?

I think it has to do with 3D and aliasing.
It’s more complex than the lens imo.

Yes unbelievable, Half an hour for 48Mo. They should make a server for china and another one for the rest of the world.
Perhaps the server is just a computer desktop, in this case they should provide a link to mediafire, it will be faster.

By they way i wonder why i can’t process other 360 pictures into piplay.
