Second hand Base station (2016) wont track 8k X 2 base stations different laser pattern

Hi guys

I have two base stations now. One i bought new and its from 2019 and one old i see is from 2016 that just arrived. The lasers seems a bit dim and it takes a while to start up. I seem to remember they were like this. On the new one there is a square pattern and its quite visible but on the second there are more and they are offset. Both are showing in Pitool and steamVR

I have tried everything and i just cant get the old one to track in any channel and with only that one up. Any ideas?

The one (you call old) is really strange and I never seen one like this :slight_smile:. Here is the standard (2018 LH v1) shot of mine (which I sold though, so I do not have them anymore):

What you can notice on the detail are the lit short lines right and bottom from the LED matrix. Those lines are the laser traces (one scanning horizontal and one vertical). Your old one seems to be missing the vertical laser trace, which could make it incapable of tracking.

The fact that the headset “sees” the bases is not related to the lasers but to the (IR) LED array which transmits the base telemetry and the sync pulses. If you have another headset native to SteamVR (Vive, Index, Vive pro, etc.) you can try to connect it and check the firmware rev of your bases.

From certain rev. the bases were able to report different types of errors in the telemetry data and it could help you diagnose the problem. Eventually, you may try to “hard-upgrade” the firmware to the latest one available for v1 bases by using the USB drive method described here:

I would try the first upgrade without the “calibration rescue” firmware though as we do not know if the base is miscalibrated.

You can also check the firmware version by looking into the file:
\Steam\config\lighthouse\lighthousedb.json
In this file, you also can, if you have the right FW rev, read the reported HW errors (if there are any).

The last know FW rev. for v1 LHs is 436.

Thanks for the reply. It is indeed the first ones that came out. Sadly i didnt know or i would not have bought it. Ive done the firmware (3 different but only the oldest works) and recalib things so best guess is that the Pimax firmware/software does not support it. Got a small slimmer of hope though

So you say that the first version (whatever which was it) of v1 bases does not support the latest v1 firmware?
Could you post (or send me via PM) your lighthousedb.json?

Ive tried 3 different and the 2 latter i will get a green light for a couple of seconds and then blink red

The red light does not have to mean that the firmware is not compatible, but can also mean the hardware failure. I believe this is exactly what was introduced in the later firmwares.

So the task would be to try flashing the latest firmware then try if the headset can at least receive the IR telemetry (is the LED array lit when the state LED is red?). Then looking into lighthousedb.json for the errors reported.

But my guess is the LH is busted and we can only just figure out the exact reason. The evidence suggests either the motor or the laser for vertical beam.

The IR is on and everything is lit up. The db.json file does not exist. All i have in that folder is Dir lhr-d459e904. Also tried searching for it.

Asuming you mean they introduced a HW fail detection in the later FW correct?

According to your lighthousedb.json there is a base with the serial 011e45a8 (or a8451101 as I am not sure right now if it is little or big-endian notation), which when running firmware 436, reports faults: 8.

According to unofficial info from here (LighthouseRedox/Base Station.md at master · nairol/LighthouseRedox · GitHub), faults: 8 corresponds to Laser1 error.

Just to add, time_last_seen: 1608210129 corresponds to date&time 2020-12-17 14:02:09, which means just the fresh info.

I guess not, except recycling it. I remember I read somewhere in Amazon comments that there are sellers who sell used v1 LHs (and even do not mark them as used) and intentionally downgrade the firmwares to mask the hardware failures.

So when buying the used one, make sure you know what you are buying before hand.

The old one is 1.0 Consumer-version 1 which is the same as my lighthouses however it seems to be broken as you should have a laser on the right side just like the square one which is 1.0 Consumer-version 2.

Luckily for me the seller gave me back the money no questions asked which is great. We do have a rating system for Finn.no and both of us have a very good standing and reviews there so i felt very comfortable shopping with him. So my hats off to him for that and thank you again for helping me diagnose.
