For those of us who wear glasses, will we be able to request our Pimax units with prescription lenses rather than the normal ones? Or what other solutions will be available regarding those of us who wear glasses? Are the default lenses that come with the unit replaceable?
If you’re a backer the HMD will come with prescription lens inserts, you just take them to your optician and have lenses made up for them, and if the preview image on the campaign is accurate, it looks like the frame attaches magnetically, so they’ll be real easy to pop in and out as you need.
Wow that’s great news! Thanks SWAT
This is important: Wait to get the prescription until we have final word on the focal distance. The last I saw it was 2 meters, but I’m not sure that’s final. Be sure to tell the optometrist that focal distance, especially if you’re older and have limited visual “accommodation”. It will save you from eyestrain.
There are at least 2 companies that specialize in VR lenses. I’m considering using this one: https://vr-lens-lab.com/
If anyone has recommendations, please share them.
As far as I know you can just use your local opticians to put the lenses in for your eyes as long as you have the attachments that go into the HMD.
My dad was an optometrist. It’s a bit more complicated to cut lenses for a frame, when you don’t have a factory-made template. They can probably do an OK job, assuming they have the equipment (not all do) or you can order on-line from a place that specializes in VR. Either option can work. I’ll still probably order mine on-line, since they have more experience with VR.
I had a short email correspondence with VR-lens regarding their plans (if any) to sell lenses for the 8K. They said their manufacturing of knock-off lens rings would be complicated by the fact that Pimax rings are presumably going to be magnetic. They speculated that they could/would just make the lenses and leave it to the user to glue/snap them into the Pimax rings.
I have vr-lens lenses in my Vive and am very happy with their optical correction so was hoping to use them again as my supplier.
I’m curious what the frames will look like
Because these don’t look sufficiently wide for the 8K
Custom lenses? Sounds expensive! Too bad an arrangement can’t be made with Zenni online to produce the correct size lens for us.
I have bought Zenni prescription lenses for both a 3d printed insert for my Oculas Rift, and for my Shinecon “Smartphone” VR head set ( for flying my RC planes) and each time the cost was $10.
Yes $10 and they worked perfect, and arrived in 1 week. Why pay $100 when we could get them for $10?
Nobody said we’re gonna get custom lenses. Just an empty frame you can bring to your optician to fit some glasses in and will fit the inside of the headset well.
The big question I think will be the ultimate shape. Hopefully it is something near to a standard lens that they can cite a frame we need to fit for.
I got a printed lens holder to fit in my Rift that has perfect circle lenses and the guy that printed it gave the frame you could order in his description (the cheapest you could get since we didn’t need the frame). Basically they were Harry Potter glasses. I ordered that frame with my scripts and just popped the lenses out and pitched the frame when they came in and popped the lenses into the 3d printed frames and put in the Rift. It was a very nice solution.
I bought rimless glasses and modified and fit them very very near to my eyes to cover the full focus area. https://www.zennioptical.com/p/rimless-stainless-steel-frame/3675?skuId=367515
“Nobody said we’re gonna get custom lenses. Just an empty frame you can bring to your optician to fit some glasses in and will fit the inside of the headset well.”
And neither did I…I’m was talking about “BUYING” expensive custom fit lenses VS buying cheaper ones from Zenni.
Where the hell did I say we were getting them with the frames? REread my post.
I use some quality glass x1 45mm camera lens with vive , once they warm up they work great
edit
I suppose it would be easy enough to attach a regular round lens to the magnetic frame that they provide with some hot glue if bespoke lens are too difficult to get hold of
I really don’t know why people are trying to make this out to be a big problem. There are several onlne places where you can send in frames and they will fit lenses for <$20. I’ve already checked with them and they say its absolutely no problem. Even my small local (chain) opticians say they can do it, the machinery is not that “specialist”, its simply routine these days.
They arent custom lenses at all, they are completely standard lenses trimmed down to fit the inserts inexactly the same way they trim them to fit all the various sizes and shapes of off the shelf glasses.
