You will never get even a fraction of the base from other store platforms.
Focus on improving your software to work with existing platforms instead of fragmenting the market further. Feature creep like a store would only detract from improving the overall experience. No one wants a Pimax store. No one uses the existing Videos/Games tabs anyway.
Pimax has a big advantage right now with its 2K display, and bumping this to 4k native and having it work with SteamVR better would be the best move IMO. How well the hardware works should be significantly more important than shoddy new experiences that fragment the market.
The fact that this idea was brought up only worries me that the firmware and 4k is not a priority for Pimax.
I have to agree with n4ru. Better to work with steam and focus on your tech improvements & such.
You have the beginnings of a great product. I would reccommend focusing on hmd improvements and work on your positional tracking/controller concepts keeping in mind to have compatability to use with other headsets(like Nolovr) and easy controller emulation compatibility.
I see vr hmd n control systems should be modular. Using things like usb-c (micro) port for addons say 2 or 3. (ie camera/s; tacking system/controllers, etc)
Not a strong tech head. But wondering if anyone has explored passive wireless?
Ie had a mouse that had no internal power but sat on a wired pad that the mouse powered n tracked mouse movements, button presses etc. The leds even powered wireless.
Another example of source is inventory control tags in stores.
Something Lukeb mentioned is those who need glasses have bad experience.
An idea since i am sure there might be a way to “distort” the displayed image using software to input one’s eye prescription. As you already use a software ipd adjustment. I would recommend having user stored setups.
Unfortunately this cannot be corrected by distorting the display.
The only way is to either make additional lenses available or to change the design of the lens holder to allow some positional (distance to the display) adjustment.
I don’t mind having to wear my glasses with Pimax, but also needing to have a second pair of lenses stuck on top of the Pimax lenses to get a usable focus makes the HMD uncomfortable and reduces the focused field of view to a small zone in the middle of the display.
Believe it or not, this is still ok when playing games and viewing videos because we normally only require the object in the centre of our vision to be in focus to get a good image experience.
This is why good head tracking is so important with Pimax.
Even with perfect vision, objects at the edge of the field of view are not in perfect focuse.
Some HMD designers are proposing to use eye tracking to only fully render the part of the image that the user is focusing on, to be able to achieve higher frame rates.
So in my opinion, I couldn’t care less about having full 4K. The current 2K display is excellent if focused, and I would happily purchase another Pimax 4K if it had proper focus adjustment.
Pimax is ahead of the competition at the moment with a 4K display and the engineers should be designing the next better 4K Pimax with room sensing and controllers and not taking their eyes off the ball with an 8K unit that will just be another alpha development.
People won’t give Pimax another chance if you ignore the needs of your current user base.
Thats unfortunate. So then we need a version 2 shell at the very least for dyi folks to swap guts out of. Along with a full v2.0.
Be good to change model to fully upgradeable. (be able to swap componets out for upgrading hmd) ir mainboard & daughter board. I would also have 3 micro usb 3 ports for “add ons” ie camera, pos system and controllers
I found with myself having the PiMax against face i can see outer edge of display (binocular effect). However pulling it out say approx 1/16" to possibly 1/8" it removes the binocular effect n improves focus 4 me.
My idea for warp/focus “distortion” for lack of better word. I remember playing with old crt displays to try n fix the monitor/tv in question. And recall one of the internal adjustments affected focus. Was hopeful that something like that could be used to emulate a physical adjust (lens 2 screen). But from what you have said unfortunately won’t work in this case.
Unfortunately as one ages, the focal point of the lens in the eye changes forward or back of the retina and no amount of image adjustment will move the focal back again. Only an optical lens can do that because it bend the light rays so that the focal point is changed.
This is what has to happen with Pimax if it is ever going to be able to cater for people with different vision.
If it’s market is only for people with perfect vision then they will very quickly find out how small a market it is.
Sadly even a $20 Google Cardboard unit focuses better than Pimax and this is because the lenses can be moved back and forth.
Pimax made a VERY BAD decision to not allow mechanical focus adjustment.
Yeah I agree on physical focus adjustment. The current headset has a real big problem and that is that if you use it for a while, like an hour, and then take it off, your eyes really need a few minutes to adjust again to the normal world. I’m pretty sure that’s because while using the headset, your eyes are forced to look towards the middle, because that’s where the lenses are.
I never had this issue with a google cardboard and it really is limiting the fun of the experience
