Previous versions would turn the display off when the proximity sensor would detect no presence of a user.
As of latest version (1.2.75) the HMD is always on, as long as the computer is running.

Also HMD auto power up when pc boot (usb power on). And I have second display as 2nd part of desktop always. Maybe its good idea, power on hmd by power button and auto off by timer when is not use (sensor)
did a few tests, in pimax mode idling in windows results in screen always on
if a game is running in steamvr the hmd correctly shuts the display down if the sensor detects nothing
today it is properly working even on windows, it seems the problem is intermittent
