The demonstration in Toronto would be on the 19th and 20th?
No reviews available?
If I’m not mistaken, the free demo was late last night and it’s only 9:22am so give the canadians a bit of time to wake up and write the reviews
By the way they should use Fresnel lenses.
There is something that was not on the Pimax 4K and this was a sharp image. I think that’s the goal of using Fresnel lenses and only Fresnel can do that.
They are using fresnel v2.0 lens. The unit showcased in Toronto is not the new prototype that the team will be demoing in the US next week.
The images are sharp compared to the 4k. No jaggies (aliasing).
With this not being the new prototype it doesn’t have the mechanical ipd. So depending on the user small text in Bigscreen will not be as clear without proper ipd set.
I was at the event on the 19 & 20. Will post a more in depth either later today or tomorrow night.
Did you see the 5K version?
They only had the 8k prototype. I imagine the 5k might be with them in the US tour.
Great ! Anxious for your review !
I love that the hands on demos have been all around positive. Well done @PimaxVR I am very much looking forward to buying this HMD. The only thing that makes me sad is that I cant back the KS, and I will need a new video card.
what games have you tested with pimax 8k in Toronto ?
Thanks for the link.
I can’t understand how Pimax insists on not demonstrating their headset with such games as Elite Dangerous or another equivalent. These demonstrations were supposed to be awesome, but the choice of what they put to experience is frustrating.

Programs/Games sample
-Fruit Ninja
-The Lab
-The blue
-Bigscreen Beta
They do have Serious Sam but we couldn’t get it to launch on the MSI laptop. Could be a variety of reasons it had trouble (might even be mobile gpu vs full).
With the new prototype being showcased next week; will be the better time to showcase games like Ed, Project Cars 2 & something like Ethan Carter VR &/or Natures Trek.
They should have taken out the Fruit Ninja and replaced it with the ED.
I do not know why there are no reviews using The Lab.
The only one of this list that would be interesting to read about a review is just The Serious Sam, but by the way it did not work. Depressing.
Do you know, why they insist on using laptop for the demos instead of high-end desktop with possibly GTX 1080 TI? I believe the laptop does not do a justice to the hardware nor to the games people have requested (e.g. PC2, E:D, etc.).
Also I understood that they still demo the old headset, but performance wise there should be no difference to the new one (all the changes like lenses, IPD, etc should not affect perf.), so why they do not demo more demanding apps, which people were asking for, even with the current version?
Why the new version is delayed? I believe it was supposed to be ready for the shows now, no?
I know those questions are for Pimax, but maybe you could pitch them to them.
Okay lets begin my review.
Disclaimer: The 8k being showcased at Immersed 2017 in Toronto is not the new Prototype that is being revealed next week in the USA. I was at this event assisting Ru; one of the talented PiMax team.
I will start by saying Neil who is the host that organized the Immersed event was also a great help with introducing PiMax 8k to a wide variety of folks at the event. Those fellow Canucks are likely to know who AJ is from The Space Channel.
8k Model being showcased is the older Prototype with Dual Hdmi & Dual cables. As you all know this unit does not have the mechanical ipd adjustment.
What do we know about this 8k Prototype?
- Brightness on par with Rift Cv1
- No Mechanical Ipd adjustment
- Narrow distortion near edge of lense (as said you need to be looking for it)
No. 2 will affect focus on fine details like Bigscreen Beta text if tester’s ipd not the same same as the prototype. Text will have blurring for example.
The new Prototype i believe is due to have improved screens amongst other goodies like the mech ipd adjustment & likely with saying improved screens is likely to have improved contrast & brightness. (@deletedpimaxrep1 @Matthew.Xu)
Truthfully as i mentioned in the other discussion. If you own a 4k; the 8k is like night & day.
So to use some material here:
Human vision 220° FOV 32m
PiMax 8k 200° FOV 16m
Other VR HMD 110°FOV 2m
In the games programs listed above
Everything looks really good:
-
Now by that i mean no Jaggies. The small fish look as they should. Diagonal lines are straight & smooth looking.
-
Color, contrast & brightness greatly improved over 4k model. Minimal to zero ghosting (from coming from the 4k didn’t notice any).
-
SDE? I myself didn’t notice any compared to the 4k. But those who have higher acuity than mine have noticed some. (32m pixels -Human eye vs 16m pixels) like the 4k which has 8m pixels you need to be looking for it; even more so on the 8k.
-
The castle in the far off distance in Fruit Ninja is nice & clear. In Bigscreen beta fine text is blurred a bit like in other reviews of which should look considerably better with the new prototype as left & right eye will be able to adjust for proper convergence (ipd) which will bring fine details like text in proper alignment between left & right which will result in proper focus.
Now we did discover some potenial issues. Due to the headset size even though its very light & imo as others said very comfortable even with straps. If the headset straps not tight enough the headset may wobble causing a visible distortion (straps need to be a good tightness but not uncomfortably so)
Some performance issues reported by others could be due to it being a laptop the output power to usb & hdmi might be not supplying enough 5v amps at times. The team is looking at obtaining a stronger than 5v adapter to help eliminate this possible under current. Perhaps something like this guy might help.
Lighthouses the PiMax Lighthouse works well. We did however have a bit of tracking issue during the day due to big window & too much sunlight. Those who are unfamilar with the Lighthouse tech it emits infrared lasers & headset & controllers sensors track using the info collected from tge beams.
One of the fellow exhibitors helped identify this and said the vive lighthouses are affected by this. Though not affected as much as psvr is. So @Sjef you may still need some decent curtains for your large windows.
I will say now having had the opportunity to try even the prototype anticipating delivery of 8k is definitely harder. I would have loved to have taken even the prototype home. But as much as I am eager to have & use this awesome new headset if needed (though prefer on-time delivery schedule) would be content to wait a month if needed to ensure quality & finishing touches.
Will post more details later in terms Immersed event & answer folks questions where i can.
Why a Laptop? The answer simply put is a desktop system while being considerably better overall. Its not easy to cart around. With a laptop you only need to carry the laptop, power brick & headset componets.
A desktop you now have a tower, keyboard/mouse & monitor to cart around. Setup takes longer & now your also paying more to carry due increased bulk.
Performance issues i covered a bit with possible 5v amps not stable enough to power displays in hmd. The other consideration of course is driver optimization may also be a factor. Over all very nice. The new model likely to also see a performance boost with hopefully having the DP 1.4 cable as your gpu has to convert signals to hdmi where as dp from my understanding has more direct control over displays.
we are talking her about 5 min setup right at most…for outstanding and best performance…well if i would sell items, i would create the best environment for it, wouldn’t you?
5min is truthfully an understatement. Reason why you need to pack these items carefully to prevent damage. Now maybe it might only add 5mins to setup time once all the components are unpacked. But your adding alot of time, expense, weight & bulk to travelling the world. Even if using an itx compact build in a Node 202.
As for the 1080ti? If like @Enopho Aurorus thats a 2.5 pound card. Would a 600xfx psu from silverstone or corsair be sufficient? With best intel cpu? The problem with showcasing something like this with best consumer gpu is the fact if you have lesser components. Then people might be disappointed by the performance they receive.
The Laptop they are using is very nice. As mentioned with a decent 5v 4-5 amp usb brick should help the prototype. The newer prototype us likely to be easier on power with only requiring 1 DP & 2 usb vs 2hdmi & 2 usb ports.
Also all demos there were running on similar spec asus rog laptops.
Ru for example came solo so that becomes alot for 1 person to carry around. And each day she needed to take down setup to demo at a different location in Toronto.
