I would be interested in knowing what version of firmware is installed when it arrives and also what version of Piplay the link you get to download gets.
Before you install Piplay, make sure you turn off you anti-virus software.
There is lots of advice on the forum for getting the games you mentioned going so help is at hand if you need it.
At the moment, in my opinion, Piplay version 1.1.92 gives the best image quality, how ever the latest version 1.2.57 is probably the most stable and compatible with Oculus and SteamVR.
I can’t comment about the car racing games because I haven’t tried them, but for Elite Dangerous, I think that Piplay 1.1.92 gave the best display.
It may take a bit of fiddling to get Pimax working how you like, but stick with it and ask lots of questions if you get stuck.
Also Pimax support on Skype is available, but sometimes a bit slow to respond.

1.1.92 for ED, 1.1.57 for another xDDD
I had to go back to 1.1.92 to get Dirt Rally working.
Later versions have better performance but don’t look as sharp, as everyone says.
The biggest issue for me though is that in Steam VR, the menu doesn’t work properly in later versions. In order to quit games I would have to take the headset off and go to my computer.
So basically, if your computer is fast enough, 1.1.92, if not, the latest version.

it arrived yesterday and I was really happy to start with,
1st the Parcel Rap had been taped up, so the item had been opened already :frowning
2nd on opening the box, the front of the headset where the plastic film protection cover looks like it has been used then replaced back on, as there is lots of dust behind it, and the item was sold as new item on ebay, which I pay £315 pounds
I have opened a Case on Ebay
so I already had looked on these forums for info, but was still unsure which was the best Software (Piplay) to use
@LukeB regarding the Frimware , im sorry my friend but I was in such a rush to test I didn’t even Document the Info and Updated it by pressing the check for updates (at the bottom of the Piplay window)
I ended up installing v1.192 Piplay and also install oculus Software along with Steam Vr
so I ran the unit and tested,
THE GOOD…
I reached the figure of 63 or 64 IPD which was ok
running AssettoCorsa looks stunning
EliteDangerous looks stunning
THE BAD
there is some horrid Ghosting ,Bluring and distance view is not good either
there is a also something behind the one of the lenses, a hair ?, a hairline crack ?, or some kind of defective production error ?
I also read other people with things behind the lens, (skin, hair, dust), this has happened in production, regardless of forum reply saying they are built in Dust Free Enviroment
My Thoughts on PiMAX Company
as you all know the price of VR units are a lot of money and for what you get it isn’t what us GAMERS or DEVELOPERS really want, as in Resolution Quality
I have tried Oculus Rift and the Vive and where both AMAZING for the 1st time, although the Resolution on both was not great 1st time or any other time…
I looked around for something better and found the IMAX VR, but later learned these Units were not destined for Commercial Users like us, they will be using them for Films and where people sit in a pod and watch a film LOL…
then I seen the PiMAX Specs and didn’t seem to bad tbh it looked promising
from what I have seen on the forums, it appears that they are trying to make better Software and Firmware
THIS IS GREAT
although its seems like some have resolved some issues and made new issues
just a WORD of Mention to PiMAX Developers
if you can fix the issues what the PiMAX 4K has then im sure without a doubt people will be FLOCKING to this SITE and PURCHASING your UNITS like HOT CAKES
you have some great SPECS on this UNIT but FIRMWARE and SOFTWARE needs to be REVISED
if I had the money I would like to Visit the PiMAX Company as I have family in China

I just read a post of your where you say your sticking with 1.192 Piplay and 1.0.0.248 Firmware
have you used 1.0.0.236 before
I ask as i watched a YouTube vid and they use 1.0.0.236 which looks ok in the vid

The hair on the panel is the reason mine no longer works and Pimax will not help me as I disassembled it to remove the hair and am now factory locked out of the device. If you attempt to fix this do not turn the headset on until fully assembled or it will brick it.
I wonder if this is even legal in the us. A device that kills itself when you open it, that is just absurd. I have made a hacked version that enables the device again and have enabled a few users again who for example wanted to remove the blue light filter in the device which btw yields a so much brighter image, or wanted to clean their lenses or who wanted to relieve stress on their nose. All legit reasons to open the device and it is just crazy those people can not use their devices anymore. I am not a lawyer but I would say they would win a class action lawsuit against pimax.

No I think I missed that firmware update and went to 1.0.0.248.
I have now installed firmware version 1.0.0.251 which seems ok, I also have the latest Piplay 1.2.57 which is not the best in video quality, but I’m coping with it for now.
I’m hoping that Pimax will make an update to resolve the quality issue in time.
I installed the latest OCHome but without the Oculus sensor the install cannot complete and does not detect the HMD.
Piplay works OK but the part of the Oculus software that does install causes more trouble than it’s worth so I uninstalled it again.

I have boxed up the VR Unit and i am requesting a refund from the ebay seller
the seller has offered a reduction of the price, but its of no use with a optical defect 
so im just waiting for the returns process atm
I would like to see what the PiMAX 8K brings to the table
some SPECS would be nice
DEAR PiMAX i would like to MENTION that you should allow the user to ACCESS MULTIPLE RESOLUTIONS VIA THE PiPlay APP and THROUGTH THE user`s GPU PANEL ie NVIDIA OR ATI PANEL

So I have decided to take a gamble and keep the PiMAX
update on my purchase
The seller has reduced the cost of the VR Unit, so im going to keep the Unit and see if I can get behind the Lens and see what the Defect is
My question is, has anyone succeeded in getting to the inside of the Lenses, Cleaning them and Fitting it back together
