apparently Xtal is fighting back with a 8K 180 deg FOV HMD, which will be available to test at CES …

    • High-density LCDs displays with unbeatable resolution 8K
  • Foveated rendering capabilities

  • AR mixed reality module addon

  • Improved lenses with 180º FOV

  • Eye-tracking capable to run up to 210 fps

  • Embedded Ultraleap hand-tracking

  • The convenience of VirtualLink cable

  • Version with helmet mount for simulations*

Interesting but I doubt this is for consumers…

Are the 8K total? Even with foveated rendering how are they gonna drive the real 8K? Not the Pimax 8K

not sure, just passing on the info i got

It will be VR 8k & at 180 FoV that means a 32:9 layout not TV ITU 8k which is not True 8k but 7680×4320@16:9 vs true 8k at 8196×4320.

Now True True 8k is 1:1 @ 8196×8196

Anyway that’s hell a lot of Pixels to render…

It would be interesting to see if VRgineers can match pimax on refreshes considering I believe the 5k Xtal is 70hz.

Now we can see VRgineers are even moving away from oled it seems.

Virtual link might be odd to adapt as it seems to have had failings (see Valve on Vlink Index)

Helmet mount definitely seems to be more targeting professional use in training sims.

Wonder what this is supposed to mean… 210 fps but on 70 Hz?

At.a guess think Eyetracking is at 210fps not the rendered image.

I would think that’s the point. Basically it “reads” Your eyes (pupils) position 210 times per second.

(EDIT: Hmm, must try avoid them ninjas…)

Well, it’s the… eye-tracking… The cameras that shoot your eyes, which have nothing to do with the screen and game frame rate – the faster they are, the better they can catch rapid eye movements, and provide material of greater temporal resolution for extrapolating where your gaze is going. :7

So… Remind me, those lucky few among us who have tried the old XTal: Would that be actual 180 degrees of FOV (horizontal, of course), or is it a number pulled out of some piece of anatomy, like Pimax’s 200°? - I seem to recall SweViver made a “reconstruction” sort of picture, that I took to confirm suspicions toward the latter… :7

Do you have a link or some other reference to the announcement?

8K  Im pretty sure its 4K per eye. Either way, interesting to check it out. I wonder about the price though…

It’s an email i got from them.

Yes. That resolution would make one impressive simulator. We tried the new Flight Voyager 180 3D cinema at dream world last week in the Gold Coast. The scale was impressive but I kept thinking next gen VR will blow it away

I think this move is to justify the price difference over 8K-X. The decision was probably made after trying your sample at VR days

Thanks for posting. But Im not holding my breath, we have seen XTAL’s demos at these demo shows for the last 2 years and still nothing consumer or price friendly. Now a “new and improved” ? By the time this is ready for prime time, Pimax will have launched a “poor mans” equivalent for 1/4 the price. But a “true” 8K definitely sounds interesting for sure!

Now do you mean 8k x 2? Otherwise you will have limited FoV headset.:upside_down_face:

Well my fingers got ahead of my brain, I meant it would be nice to see what another 8K headset looks like compared to Pimaxes (2 X 4K) unit ie 8KX/8K+. Be cool to see XTAL’s promoted ( assumed 2 X 4K) with great lenses, minimal distortion, more panel utilization, better IPD setting utilization etc etc

Just keep in mind with Xtal’s 8k it is likely to have similar complaint of low Vertical FoV due to it being 20° wider than Pimax on Large FoV. Just like it’s 5k version.
