New HP 4K HMD $599

Im new to all this but how does Pimax get away with calling the 5k+, 5k? Its made up of two panels that are less resolution than the panels in the reverb?

Release date april 26 according to this post: Reddit - Dive into anything

Also the lack of IPD adjustment seems indeed a deal breaker here, since the sweet spot supposedly is actually quite small. Kind of amazing how anno 2019 big companies are releasing HMD’s without IPD hardware adjustment.

They are using Fresnel Aspherical lenses which they claim can handle a wider range of ipd’s (along with software ipd adjustment)

The Redit guy who demoed it said the sweet spot (getting everything into focus by moving Hmd around on your head) was very small. I remember the Hp rep saying in an interview that it was big. Hopefully the one released to public wil have bigger sweetspot! Also he said the release date is April 26th.

Keep in mind pure aspherical lenses has a huge sweetspot compared to a hybrid fresnel aspherical hybrid.

@Sjef did extensive mod to his p4k to improve eyestrain due to his ipd being wide.

I swear its like a VR dev inside joke. No one wants to take a chance in creating a creative looking HMD. Asides from Pimax everything looks like slapping a cardboard box on your face. Make you wonder if they are purposely doing so and 8 months to a year down the road Hey consumers look we have a slimmer cooler looking form factor. I’ll stick with my Pimax and Thank you Pimax for taking a leap of faith in HMD design creativity

Cheers

The chevron certainly makes the Pimax headsets stand out from the crowd and design matters when selling a product.

As someone on the opposite end of the spectrum, I am not put off by the design but I’m not marvelling at it either. Adding the LED weakens the structural integrity of the housing and adds costs and complexity to manufacturing. In the end Pimax thought it was worth it.

Just my opinion, I prefer the minimalsim of the Reverb but volume rockers and adjustable IPD would be nice.

Can’t wait for more details on the Acer OJO and the Valve Index.

The real question is the Chevron still RGB capable as it was in prototypes that we were told was being kept? Or are we stuck with the lolely blue?

I’d say we are stuck with the color, because the plastic would have to be transparent. At best variations of blue.

So then they mustn’t understood when it was asked & they said they would keep the rgb light strip. Probably only capabable of on/off or blink. Too much just saying yes it seems without considering rammifications of answers not being communicated…

Personally I only care how the HMD looks from the inside

Still no official pre-order or any availability news, other than that reddit guy who said sale starts the 26th. I hope they’ve not run into any problems

With amazon as the seller we shouldn’t have to wait long anymore. :+1:
The official HP page doesn’t know of the Reverb’s existence yet, just the old headset.

There is a premonition that HP Reverb will eclipse all other headsets in terms of high resolution and lack of SDE
I’ve barely restrained to get an HP Reverb as an additional VR headset, but there is every chance that the price will be reduced during the year, so I’ll wait for a while.

At the same time I want to see the reviews actually.

I would honestly suggest waiting for the Ojo. It has the same res and has physical IPD adjustment unlike the HP.

Also we will know more about the valve Index May 1st

Am I missing something regarding the software only adjustment for IPD. The PSVR had software only IPD adjustments and I never had any issues with that.

Looks like a solid HMD when it comes to resolution but I’ll be waiting for some reviews as well, maybe price wil come down between now and then. I still have to unload my Pimax 5K+, have the Pimax 4K and 8K too, how many headsets does one actually need!?!:beers:

HW IPD adjustment has the potential to support a wider IPD range, software can only compensate for a limited amount of factors.
With fixed lenses there isn’t a problem as long as the user’s IPD falls into the range they have been designed for.
