Started going through and checking out different games after just getting my 5k+. Running a 2080ti. Have a vive already and do not experience any of these issues with these same games. This was after trying around a dozen games, so about half the games I’ve tried have some serious problems on the Pimax.
#1 Parallel projection issue - so I’ve ran into 2 games so far where booting them up I had double vision, one was Raw Data and the other was Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice. If I enable parallel projection support then the double vision goes away, but Raw Data ends up running like total shit. I can have it set to low graphic settings and render at a subsampled resolution as far as I can go to the point where it looks much worse than it does on my vive and it still runs terrible. Hellblade was even worse, if I have parallel projection support turned on then the game can’t even load, it just crashes.
Also, toggling parallel projection doesn’t actually work unless you turn pitool and steamVR off and then back on again. It should probably note that because at first I thought checking that box didn’t do anything at all…
#2 I’ve found multiple games that get a black box in the center of my vision popping in and out constantly. So far this occurs in Accounting+, Form, and Space Pirate Trainer.
#3 I’ve only found this problem in Fallout 4 but it’s very strange. The shadow rendering is all screwy, I have massive shadows showing that actually move when my headset moves, as if the sun (source of light) is moving with my head. It’s super trippy. Also found it odd that the menus had the parallel projection issue but not the actual gameplay
Just got my Pimax and started testing. I have also noticed some intermittent issues with shadow flickering. One game in particular was “To The Top”. I believe I saw the black box you are referring to. Did it look like a dark square shadow? It seemed to only appear in one eye at a time. I was wondering if it was possibly a defect with the cable or something weird with the way the game is rendered.
Yeah, it’s a shame there are performance costs. But, I give Pimax credit for having PP as a solution to issues with games that seem to be hardcoded with a specific fov. I have yet to figure out when it’s a good idea to use “Hidden Area Mask”.
On a side note, I read on the (Reddit) forums that Steam VR supersampling does nothing with PP enabled, so best results may come from lowering that value in Steam VR and increasing Pitool SS. I haven’t had a chance to test that personally yet, though.
I’m in the same boat on this issue as well. If I remember correctly, Helio suggested we just keep this checked all times… but doesn’t that come with a performance hit? I haven’t find any app yet that actually required it but without controllers I’m only playing sims with my Pimax… don’t know if that matters though.
The square backet represents full panel the curved backet represents what you can see of the panel. Rendering outside of the viewport is waste & unnecessary use of resources as you can’t see it. Think of it as rendering full off screen.
Well… that’s a damn good explanation! Thank you! I’ll definitely have to put that though to the test. I’ve check and unchecked that in the past and didn’t notice any difference but I didn’t have a full understanding until you provided it.
Steam home, and whatever the first couple games I tried… I think Beat Saber and the Gallery ep 2
Are there any games that are actually optimized for Pimax that are an ideal example of what we should hope for in games? Hopefully these things get ironed out more over time I guess.
I’d say Elite Dangerous comes close. VR greatly improves the immersion, so you really feel that you are flying a ship in space. The wide FOV is put to good use, so that you can appreciate your surroundings, see attackers approach, etc. Of course, this is what others have said; I won’t have my 8K for quite a while yet.
