I feel like MRTV should stop doing these comparisons against finished HMD’s and wait until he has the final 8KX in his hands. I’m struggling to get any value from this video purley based on the fact that it’s not the finished article.
The device actually is just the same one that was also shown at CES. Audio is not the final one but displays are. Looking at the comments it seems most viewers appreciate these first impressions from “real people”.
Personally don’t trust anyone until my 8KX arrives and I can check whether it’s terrible or great.
I tried it out for myself in Orlando and it was great. Bottom line is the SDE is so minimal it’s seriously barely even perceivable, and won’t be noticed. The comfort was great with the MAS, and I didn’t have any issue at all trying to find the sweet spot. I do own a 5K+, so maybe I’ve adjusted to that over the past year, but I didn’t have any issues like the guy described in that video. It basically felt like I was wearing a more comfortable, higher resolution 5K+, without SDE. I just hope it gets released sometime soon.
Thank u4 sharing your experience with the 8KX. I do not like SDE and find it very distracting so I’m looking forward to seeing the display.
PimaxUsa did say that they were going to incorporate some type of IPD adjustment screen.
Sounds good! IPD, vertical alignment - if all these things would be set up initially in some kind of wizard (optimally in per-user profiles) the initial experience might already be a lot better for many.
See this thread I posted!
PimaxUSA denying it to the grave haha, he said there was only one tester experiencing eye strain even after I posted a thread about the eye strain with 800 replys hahaha

So how do the two of you like the software IPD adjustment introduced in PiTool some time ago ? I haven‘t tried it yet because I stuffed the 8K back in the box when my last base station died and was too lazy to get it out again (and update firmware & PiTool etc. etc.). Would be curious to see if that actually helps - possibly even if you over-compensate if you could dial the hardware IPD dial back a bit as to relieve the pressure on the nose (which I luckily didn‘t really notice despite sitting at 60 on IPD settings).
I had the 5K+ and 8K and even after the Pitool IPD adjustments were implemented I still could not get it dialed in just right. Some games it was more noticeable than others. My IPD is low, around 60mm
Well, I have tried the software IPD but thankfully, I seem to be OK with just the hardware. I think it might help for people with IPD’s smaller than 60. Better than nothing, I guess.
Hi.
I never needed to go below the hardware ipd. I dialled it down to the minimum and found it improved the clarity/eye strain for me. I then got my index and retired my Pimax completely due to the improved comfort and sound and zero motion sickness. I hope I will fair better with the 8kx.
95% of the people who tried the headset loved it. It didn’t win a digital trends award for no reason. This guy is clearly part of the 5% who are outliers. It could also be the configurations and the fact it is pre-production without the MAS.
Yeah comments from real people is a great thing. I just find little value when I know you have a pre production unit which has issues (audio and distortion profile from what I’ve read in other threads here) and the fact that you did nothing but sing its praises when you tried it at CES. It feels a little like since the fall out over NDA’s etc there has been a distinct change of tune. I pre ordered partly based on your initial impressions, not sure I can put much value on your reviews anymore tbh
Sebastian does have the mas fitted to his 8kx. I’m not disputing the 95% but how do you know? They are not likely to show you clips of people saying it’s crap. *not that it is or they did. I agree no conclusion should be drawn until its 100% finished and ready including pitool.
Unfair comparison ,they were not testing apples to apples.Finished product
compared to beta product
It’s possible Sebastian might still have a grudge with Pimax. But it’s also possible that he didn’t give his real opinion previously, because he was afraid of getting sued while under NDA. A third possibility is Sebastian has been truthful this whole time. He has said that in fast moving games distortion is more noticeable than when playing sim games. Everyone has their own subjective experiences though depending on how sensitive they are to distortions, their IPD, head shape, etc. It won’t be perfect for everyone.
Hi Dion,
even though we had that uncalled for NDA fall out, I still reviewed the Artisan and 8K X in a fair manner. Actually the previews show both, the good and the bad and if you feel that there is anything unfair in it, please do point it out to me. Here they are again:

However, you are right with one thing and I have learned from that: it is a very different thing to try a VR headset at an expo demo situation for a couple of minutes in perfect demos as compared to be able to try it at home for hours, with all kinds of content that you choose yourself and the opportunity to do A/B comparisons against the competing headsets. My initial impressions at CES/VR Days were indeed fantastic, and I learned the following from it: in the future I will not be as vocal about my first impressions and will always add: “Disclaimer: these are my first impressions after trying the perfect demo that was set up by the manufacturer. Please wait for the full MRTV review.”.
I have started with this now when talking about the StarVR One. I saw the demo, which was perfect at that time, but I would not encourage people to order it now, since we are not sure about compatibility with games and how the SDE can compare with the current generation headsets.
So, it is good to have made this experience, because in the future, I will act accordingly. I cannot claim for myself to be the perfect reviewer yet. But I can tell you that I am striving for it and that I can learn from past mistakes.
I am truly sorry that my very first impressions made you preorder the device. Again, I am sure you can still enjoy it, if you belong to the group of people who are not affected by the Pimax distortions and if you are looking for the headset with the best resolution. In the future though, I will always make sure that people understand, that these expo experiences are my “first impressions” only.
Bye, Sebastian
Well spoken. I think indeed people easily mistook enthusiastic first impressions for full verdicts. It is not so different to us ourselves having difficulties to judge a headset from a limited demo, just remember the first 8K demo’s at the time with Fruit Ninja being shown - and we tried to imagine how that would make Elite Dangerous appear… but with the expert’s like Seb and Co. it is somehow assumed that hey would get a much bigger insight, spend hours on the booth, etc. which in fact will not necessarily be the case - each company of course wish for the Youtubers to be as positive as possible about their product so they will rarely direct them voluntarily towards their weaker spots.
And unlike some other journalists or Youtubers, Seb is a rather emotional person who then may word his positive (or negative) impressions stronger and emphasize these more than perhaps some others would do it.
But placing such a disclaimer will surely help people understand the context better.
I’ve settled on upping my mechanical IPD to 68.4 when my measured is 66.4
Used looking one eye on an object seeing focus sweet spot and then introducing the other eye, then left right tests on sweet spot and back again to setting to confirm that I got it right.
I don’t use vertical image shift or software IPD in PiTool.
Near and far IPD is also something to think of and with VR, one should accommodate far IPD for their headsets.
Also Sebastian, try running the 8K-X with PiTool 1.25 and SteamVR Video 50% and App 50% This should be close to native res. If you want to up the render target, use PiTool 1.5, 1.75 or 2 with the same SteamVR settings - see how you go.
Just curious if you find this better image and less distortions compared to PiTool 1 and 100% SteamVR Vid and App. Personally I find things run better and look better on my 8K with 1.25, 50%, 50% and 64Hz. I run Large FOV as well.
