I’m thinking about going for one of the 5k headsets mainly to use for Elite Dangerous, but am wondering if I can still use Touch controllers for other games and the 5k as the HMD? I can keep the Oculus cameras installed for touch. Will either steam VR or Oculus Home allowing using hmd of one brand, eg pimax 5k or 8k, and controllers of another brand, eg oculus touch or Xbox one, together at the same time?
I really like he specs and price point of the 5k unit, but not if I can’t use my existing hardware with it. Buying pimax controllers and multiple light houses makes it a less attractive option especially since it’s not clear how good the controllers will be or if they’ll have broad support in games.
The controllers included are the same tech as the Vive controllers. even using their licensed tech. I have not heard if oculus controllers will be supported but I doubt it because of oculus closed system. It might be possible with Driver4VR but you would have to ask the dev.
Yeah. Steam VR detects oculus controllers though and they work fine with games that support them. I’m hoping some degree of modularity in peripherals is possible. Guess we’ll see. Oh the fun of early adoption.
Supposedly the touch controllers will not work unless they see a rift CV1 or later Oculus goggles. It should be possible to get the camera that locates the controllers to be recognized by windows. It can in theory be set up as a normal windows camera. Driver 4 VR may work with the camera but I have not yet got it working. I read that recent versions of the Oculus software have tried to make it harder for people to run the software without an Oculus CV1 or later. I think some people are trying to get around the new tricks Occulus is doing to stop other headsets working with their controllers or programs. If you have a early version Oculus CV1 software or early drivers you may have a better chance of getting Oculus software or hardware working with other equipment. Normally if you install Oculus software to mucks up Pimax software or drivers.
