Is This What a Failed Kickstarter Looks Like?

Full of endless delays, excuses, confusing messages, and lack of concrete information, or timelines.

Does anyone else feel like there is something really off about Pimax? There are many red flags, but things like their latest prototypes having the same issues as the earliest one’s, and also being worse. Usually, a product gets better and better with each new prototype as you fix issues, but the Pimax 8k doesn’t improve. It feels like they put on Kickstarter a product that didn’t even exist yet, and used the money to try to make a headset, not knowing whether it would work, or not. I get that some people use Kickstarter that way, but that is not what Pimax sold as their pitch.

I know most people will ignore the Pimax 8k original release date of January 2018, saying no one expected it then, and Kickstarters are usually a year late, but that still shouldn’t be so easily accepted. That is really messed up of a company to do. To bolster a Kickstarter with a release date that they know for a fact they cannot meet, for a product that does not exist.

I’ve never been part of a failed Kickstarter, and I am willing to accept my money may be gone, but I am just curious if anyone else feels it.

I was part of the Oculus Rift DK1 Kickstarter, and it felt much different. The communication was honest, and consistent. Pimax either lies, stretches the truth, glosses over things, straight out ignores real questions/answers, and placates people with generic updates, and many people are just happy to go along with it.

Pimax needs to give a concrete timeline of when delivery is going to happen, or be honest about where they really are in the process, and what is going on. If the fact is they need another year of development, then they need to say it.

What can we do as a community to band together and force Pimax to be an honest company? It feels ridiculous that we even have to do that.

Can we upvote this post to stay at the top, and show that we are united and want real answers from Pimax.

I’m with you. I expected April or mai as latest delivery date for ALL the stuff. But it doesn’t look like we will get everything this year. With luck we will get the headsets this year. Next year probably there will come better vr headsets from other companies and the time I will use the pimax 8k will maybe be very short. I had the chance to sell my pledge for nearly double the price I paid but I didnt, somehow I regret this now. But since I have a WMR headset (around 2 weeks now) I dont really care when the 8k willl come. after all this delays it better should be perfect  but we all know …it will not

too many empty words. I’m starting to get annoyed by these things. You can sell your pledge at any time, no need to create such meaningless themes.

Sell it. It’s understandable that you are frustrated depending how high you set your expectations. Sell it and it will be gone in hours.

Yes, Pimax’s communication could be much better. I think a big part of it is culture; they want to save face and don’t want to share bad news.

I’m not sure how you can say that the headset is not improving. There are issues and they are working on them. To me, all that matters is that the final product is good. Sure, I’d like it asap, but not if it has major flaws.

Of course, they are selling a product that does not yet exist! That’s the whole point of a Kickstarter. I think they were hoping to get enough cash to make a few hundred headsets, which they could have shipped early this year, but there would have been lots of “issues”.

The thing is, this is a ground-breaking product, using techniques which have not been used before, like slanted displays and extremely wide FOV. There are bound to be some unforeseen and difficult challenges. We know it can work, the prototypes proved it’s possible.

I don’t understand why people keep demanding “concrete” timelines. It’s obvious that Pimax is trying to make a good headset and there cannot be a firm estimate until the hardware is nailed down and the production line is running at full speed (because until it is, there will likely be yield issues and unforeseen problems). Besides, no one would believe their estimates at this point anyway.

A “failed Kickstarter” is one which doesn’t ship any product or that the product is no good. Pimax appears to be doing whatever they can, to produce a good product, even though the “easy” solution would have been to ship a flawed product months ago.

Sorry, I am not with you. You have ignored much of the information openly available, e.g. from the beta testing, and say silly stuff like Pimax putting a product on Kickstarter which doesn‘t exist (most KS projects are about products that don‘t yet exist, are you new to the show ? And the 8K was demoed and tried by many users, including me, which really is annoying that somebody would be so ignorant to all that information and then start a dumb thread here).

So sorry, no support for your initiative and to me this at the current stage does not look like a failed KS project. It looks like a delayed KS project, that‘s about it.

Aren’t many (most?) Kickstarters delayed? I don’t think that’s a big deal. What matters most is the final product.

I think the biggest issue is that some people pledged, without really understanding what that truly means.

I would disagree, so far every single Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign I have ever supported has been delayed, if you can’t stand the heat don’t go in the kitchen…

We can’t speak of a failure if the finished product isn’t reviewed yet. As for “if” we ever get thje headset, the chances are pretty high, with a prototype already in the hands of a handful of people. The delays are unfortunate but it is how it is.

I’m also thinking about selling the pledge, as I have to travel to Japan next year for a longer time and won’t take my rig with me. And as it stands, I don’t expect to have my headset before the first quarter of 2019.

Please stop, this is just kiddish rant, a thread like this has been done countless times and is pointless, Pimax is working hard to deliver a good product to satisfy as many of you as possible and avoid the past errors, IT WILL BE READY WHEN IT IS READY !!!

no. and i think your question is disingenuous given you are offering to sell your slot to people for 2 grand. Unless you are trying to sell for a huge markup something you dont think is going to appear. You know the kickstarter is not failing. you know that they got 15 mil in additional funding. you know that they have functional units and are improving them and that testers are happy with progress. Literally nothing that has occurred would lead one to believe the kickstarter has failed.

They have been honest with where they are in the process. they are communicating as and when they have information of note to communicate.

What you are doing now is stamping your feet.

If you want the unit as soon as possible, then when survey goes out, ask for it early with beta software

For me, it is a kickstarter project that has many delays because it is extraordinarily ambitious.
Ok, communication isn´t optimal.

Compared to some others communication is great…

Having experience with pimax 4k - i was never expecting them to build perfect headset with no issues.
Having delays is sux, half year later with no delivery date is definitely not a good thing, but it must be accepted as receiving bad hardware is definitely something you dont want, as it cant be fixed afterward.

I dont feel like its failed, because neither Oculus or HTC are doing what i need, only Pimax does. If they fail i will be disappointed in VR generally, and not in Pimax particularly.

“Is This What a Failed Kickstarter Looks Like?” YES!! And you probably wondering what’s wrong with all those people of forum? Are they crazy, or have some kind of mind illness? No. This is PR B.S. Let’s be reasonable for a minute:

  • over a year late, and exactly a year ago they still don’t have final version of their HMD:)), so:
  • mass production at this level of development is pure fiction (photos of their factory on Facebook looks like good joke. In this room their can mount 10 pairs per day:)??)
  • everything is about picture quality in HMD, and there’s no information about full product - tracking stations and controllers
  • there are no real reviews of this product (how it work in in real conditions - different hardware, software) - from all we know there would be huge software problems (drivers for ex.) even a long long time after release (look at Pimax 4k - screen loks good, but this is still a piece of crap in software - I know, I have one and it’s horrible)
  • this ‘forum’ (only source of information about Pimax product) is full of crap - themes like: ‘what do you wish…’, ‘what are your dreams about…’ are wonderrfull, but any hard criticisk is ‘annoying’, 'meaningless ', ‘hostile’
  • after a year there’s literally NO CREDIBLE INFORMATION ABOUT TIMING - and I don’t care about couple hundreds of HMD for backers. I care about real production.

Hey Bro, what´s your problem ??? Did you sleep under a bridge or were you in jail ??? Have you read any other post about it (8K & 5K) ?? :sunglasses: Take a deep breath.

you could have this impression before last Berlin Week end, but looking at all these Feedbacks and happy testers, you must today feel assured that this Kickstarter, actually, IS a success

No definitely under a bridge :grinning:

As a backer of Ossic X, I can say that’s a perfect example of a failed Kickstarter campaign. Pimax is doing much, much, much better. Still tons of room for improvement, but it looks like we’ll get a decent product. And I suspect the wait will have been worthwhile.
