Inner Edge Lens Banding/Distortions

Hey guys. I have my 5k+ since 2 Days now … and i really have mixed feelings about it…

The outer edges are pretty unsharp and even the inner edges have distortion which is really unpleasant… The whole world kind of shifts if I turn my head, and this is also present in the inner edge.

Is there anything I can do about this?
Changing the IPD does improve it by a small amount but it’s always a tradeoff between wobbly world (which is always present for me) and super blurry sides (also always present).
I don’t really know how anybody can not see this.
I tried pretty much everything, e.g. removing the foam to get as close as possible ( touching the lenses) and tilting and shifting the HMD around my head… I also tried adding foam for increased distance and stuff like that.

Everything else is fine, no dead pixels and the audio jack works just fine…
And by the way I’m only playing skyrim right now and even my 980 works really well with it there. I will get a new GPU soon, but that is definitely not the issue.
I just have the feeling that my lenses are thrash. :frowning:

Do you know your correct IPD? Having the accurate vs wrong IPD set can make a dramatic difference.

So when you move your head left and right or up/down, the objects in some inner areas are stretching or shrinking. For me this issue is called geometry distortions and you cant do anything with that. Pimax need to correct distortion profile in their software. But they didnt so far that means its pretty hard task.

Your lenses are just fine. What you described are common problems. Not everybody seems to notice them though for some weird reason. It’s really beyond me how some seem to not notice the geometric distortions (the ‘wobbly’ effect where the geometry changes)

Is this happening in the center of the screen as well as the edges ?, dose it do this on the small FOV ?
If its the hole screen/center of the screen try lowering you setting.

In my opinion the center 50% is fine but it happens in the 25% left and 25% right part, in normal FoV. But not sure if @NoobstaysNoob agrees?

I wondered because he is using a 980 :worried:

I have a 2080TI and see the exact same thing. In fact I personally think it happens to everybody, it would make no sense if it didn’t. However some people just don’t notice it and some others don’t care or seem to simply ‘forget’ about it.

I think this issue needs more discussion.
It looks like it is a real problem to some people.
Pimax should investigate and find a solution.

I was also wondering if maybe the people with this problem have defective units. Eg. maybe assembled by the same worker who did something wrong.

Other possibility is face shape + IPD that falls into a range that the headset+lens setup can’t give good results.

Or it may be just as sjefdeklerk says, it is just some people don’t notice it. However with so many positive reviews that don’t mention this at all, I don’t think that is the case. Since for the people who have this problem, they all seem to say it is very noticable and immersion breaking.

I prette much know it yes but I also tried moving it along.
I would really like to test another 5k+ from a user who doesn’t see it…

I mean I played around 5h already but it’s still disturbing as hell.

Man … I really expected something different …
I don’t know … I already used the vive with the big FOV mod… the gained FOV is pretty much trashed because it’s blurry or does compress…
The worst thing is the inner lens distortion as it impacts both eyes and it’s quit in the middle…

Yeah I thought about that.
This is a real bummer for me. It feels kind of worse than my vive to be honest… :frowning:

Maybe im gonna play a little with that file where you can set that he distortions.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn‘t this distortions point the subject of debate with people like MRTV, Sjef having brought it up like 100 x already ? Not exactly flying under the radar so far…

It just seems that only a certain subset of users is sensitive to it, which explains why others don‘t see it or can‘t be bothered to make a fuss about it (I didn‘t notice it during the demos either but will of course reserve my final judgment for the time when I have spent more time with the devices at home).

Yeah pretty much correct… and a little bit in the inner edge like the last 3% of the ‘nose’ edge are distorted but that’s espacially annoying since you see this part in the middle of your other eye (focal overlay)

I don’t think it’s my GFX but I’m gonna upgrade soon anyway.

I would love to be able to unsee it dude. Amazing device if you don’t have that wobble and if your edges are more clear.
But I have booth of the damn issues and it’s really breaking the experience …

I only tested 3 games so far - Elite Dangerous - it’s bothers me like hell inisde coriolis or planet stations
IL 2 - bothers only when doing mission briefing / map
Asseto Corsa - oh this headset shine in this game ( pitool 1.5 , steam vr ss 60 %) becouse you dont have to move your head to munch, most time focusing on center of the screen

Imho those distortions are provide by the rings inside manufacturing lenses , they have just this shape . In my opinion only ppl with custom lenses might not noticing this issue

Hmm. Why don`t all the people who do notice the distortions please post their IPD so we can see if there is any correlation between the IPD value and noticing the distortions ? If what you suggest is the case there may be an IPD range where the lenses badly match the IPD and cause distortions, while others don’t see them ?
Probably complete rubbish, but worth a try (I am sure this has been suggested before but now more people have the headsets at home, so we get a broader base of input)

Yes I agree with this. Can you list your ipds please @SweViver @Sjef @Yata_PL @NoobstaysNoob and anyone who doesn’t/does see distortions please tell us your ipd

We def need a program to move adjust distortion in headset
