How does War Thunder | DCS | IL-2 or other flying sims perform?

Hi

I am interested in getting a HMD for simulation flying games such as:

  • War Thunder
  • DCS
  • IL-2
  • Aerofly FS 2

I have only briefly tried a Vive at a demo and the SDE was terrible and what appeals to me about the Pimax is the superior resolution.

I know the current limitations of no 6DoF and 60 FPS but in a seated flying games this may not be a big deal. From what I understand that some of the bad points such as blurring and positional drift have been improved with the later updates - is that true? It seems that comments on forums before April this year were quite negative but since then it seems that there have been more positive comments.

So is anyone playing the above sims and how well does it work? I am planning on getting a power PC with GTX1080.

Thanks

From a seated VR perspective I found the Pimax to be quite good and 60fps to be adequate. The ghosting issue (with slower head movement) and the yaw drift from a tracking perpsective is still something that the engineers are working on and can be a real pain. Some users have it worse than others it seems. I mostly play Assetto Corsa which supports additinal IR tracking on top of the in device tracking, where most games in VR do not necessarily allow for tracking information that does not come via the steamVR api (Elite dangerous and project cars can track via IR when not rendering to the HMD but will not do so when running VR, so this may be true for your flight sim games). Using Opentrack with Assetto Corsa makes the blurring less apparent, eliminates the yaw drift and adds some 6dof, but can be a challenge to get the mapping set up. So this solution is purely dependent on whether the game supports it. If it is possible to get access to a Pimax unit to try out, I would recommend you try it first, but the drift issues and ghosting has not been resolved as yet. That being said, the resolution is good and you will need some proper horsepower to get the most out of it.

The developers asked if nolo asked to remove the drift, they answered that they will correct the drifts + position tracking.

Thanks for the info Grey. I would think that a sim racing game may be similar to a flying simulator in terms of pros and cons?

Regarding acceptable performance at 60 fps - presumably that is all the more incentive to have the most powerful PC you can to minimize a lower frame rate and therefore avoid the ghosting.

Always a pleasure. Well apparently the Ghosting issue has to do with the panel type. I don’t believe that higher fps would really resolve that issue. I run a 980x2 sli setup. Although the second card does not contribute to sheer fps and sli is not supported, I found that the fps is more consistent in relation to me having sli disabled. Once the fps drops say below 55fps or so, you’d find that the experience deteriorates noticeably. So. If you can maintain that 60fps, everything should be very smooth at least, so horse power is definitely key and Vr performance of the 1080 is apparently vastly superior to the 980.

All three are pretty good experiences. IL2 is arguably the best implementation, Elite Dangerous is also very good. I have done limit flying in DCS and also seems to work decently. The better your hardware the better experience you will have as well. Honestly there is a HUGE amount of personal interpretation/ experiences with VR. I personally have not got sick and while far from ideal, I have flown a couple missions at ~30FPS. Im sure some would puke in the same situation.

Honestly biggest issue for me right now it the lack of 6DOF tracking and BAD yaw drift. Thank god for recenter HMD buttons. Looks like NoloVR might solve this (at a steep price) or fingers crossed we can get opentrack/Pimax/SteamVR to all play nice together.

Thanks for your reply, that helps a lot. I never get car sick or air sick so doubt that I would have issues.I have heard that IL2 is the best VR experience out there. If do end up getting a Pimax then I will make sure I get a GTX 1080 or GTX 1080Ti.

I bought a Nolo yesterday during their flash sale for $130 so even I don’t go the VR route then I should be able to sell it and get most of my money back.

Thanks again

One more question - given that the main selling point of the Pimax is the superior resolution to the Rift and the Vive, have you have you had the opportunity to compare those 3 flight sims against the Pimax taking into account the PC hardware that you used?

Hi there, I use the Pimax 4 K mostly for Aerofly FS 2 . And it works pretty good for me. The feeling of flying is just you sit closed in the cockpit, but in real you sit in front of your desk. Peformance can be better, a GTX 960 3 GB is running in my system and a think an up grade for better VR is a must. GTX 1060 GB will be the next card for me. Three Green for Aerofly FS2. For the other sims you stated ; I have no expirience.

regards, Eike

Don’t upgrade to 1060 it is pointless upgrade below 1070 and wait for AMD RX Vega to release to see effects on GPU market.
At least could effect on Nvidia to drop prices little bit more so 1070 will be more afordable then it is now.

okay, many thanks for your statement, I am a friend of nvidea graphic cards. With AMD , I have no expirience.
So you mean, GTX 1060 6 GB is not enough to play games in VR mode by fully or middle graphic settings.
