HMD Manufacturers should start using PU Leather instead of Foam

Just a global VR annoyance of mine…

The fact that VR has you moving a lot more is one of the pluses some games are implementing for exercise etc but the big issue in this is the foam face surround. It would be nice if HMD manufacturers just skipped foam and started using faux / PU leather as it is comfier and can be wiped down with an antibacterial wipe after each use.

It is clearly a positive as you can buy these leather face trims for every headset released.

Nothing worse than putting on a damp foam headset, especially if the moisture isn’t your own

will be honest, i was in your camp as a phsyically active vr user , and picked up a leather vr cover. but what i found was that it created a true seal , and radically increased condensation inside the headset so i took it off.

for all its faults, foam is breathable and humidity absorbent, and while that can be gross, its also functional.

The pu leather always wares off after a short time. I wouldn’t like it.

Some have perforations in them to avoid that. My Rift fogs up with the foam so I must be working out harder  or I am not as fit as you

i think single biggest difference will be room temperature. in winter room i have hmd gets cold. not see your breath cold but nor far off it. I started specifically heating the room pre vr in winter to reduce internal condensation.

It is a fair point. My spectacles do the same when I leave the house in winter. I guess the Pimax HMD will have a specified operating temperature but any sudden change in temp will cause condensation no matter what wouldn’t it?

Real life outdoor Paintball CTF was the worst. Running through the woods with the flag and your goggles fog up. Taking them off gets you insta banned so you just have to put up with it

The 8K is supposed to have an antifogging feature. Iirc, this will be provided by a fine wire that heats up, much like the defog wires found on the rear window of many cars.

Now that would be cool.

The anti-fogging of the pimax 4k appears as vertical stripes on the lens, which interferes with the user’s vision.
Sometimes it flashes like a flashlight.
If we want a clean lens or field of view, we may have to ask for a retraction of anti-fogging features.

Have the VR “leather” cover and it’s great, been using it for a year and a half no issues and I exercise almost daily in VR (using big screen and zwift)

maybe you just a sweaty dude…

I perform stock pads, pu leather traps in too much heat and moisture, there were threads about vives dying to water damage from sweat using pu leather before on reddit

i do sweat quite alot but not enough to sweat all over the headset, so i rather not use the foam ones because i hate the feeling wet foam pushing up against my face, i been using the 6mm aftermarket fake leather and it works wonder

I have tried different ones but I vastly prefer the foam style facial interfaces for active gaming. They absorb, wick and disperse moisture and allow air circulation. Also really easy to clean and dry out. The fake leather ones trap in heat and moisture.

The fake leather is great for sharing/giving demos and quick wipe-downs, It is nice to have a set to use for those occasions, but for active gaming I find foam is best. The liners in the newer 8k pictures look really comfortable.

At least the option is there and easily obtainable.
Just buy a pu leather one if you prefer that

I wouldn’t want one as the stock foam…
