Hi RUN WITHOUT PIPLAY!

I HAVE BEEN DOING LOTS OF TESTING AND HAVE FOUND SOMTHING IMPORTANT!!..If you run pimax with oculus .08 runtime and steam vr using vive NOT oculus and no piplay the games run faster and look better!!! plus u can use steam vrr supersampling, !!!, the only thing missing is u cant use plogger to send brightness commands!!
BUT THE OCULUS .08 runtime makes pimax work much better!!----------TESTED with PCARS…, ASSETTO------WARTHUNDER-------AND ELIETE DANGOURUS…SOME ONE MAKE A STANDALONE BRIGHTNESS CONTROL FOR PIMAX , TRY THIS AND YOU WILL BE AMAZED!!

Thats awesome find Kev!

Have you tried loading PiPlay to manipulate brightness then exit & load oculus runtime?

YUP IT WORKS!! ,JUST CLOSE PIPLAY AFTER YOU SET BRIGHTNESS !!, AND KEEP PIMAX SET TO 4K!! THEN SHUT DOWN PIPLAY AND MAKE SURE OCULUS .08 IS ON ,JUST CHECK OC CONFIG UTIL.!

Thats sweet for sure. If you want to check resolution with your method SteamVR screen capture may work as it did in 1.1.92 PiPlay.

On desktop goto steamvr settings turn mirror on.
Then on mirror window choose it to display left & right then use capture from that menu.

You should get a pre hmd screen & a capture showing what is sent to hmd showing left & right eye.

The one showing hmd image should have resolution numbers.

OK SO GHOSTING COMPLETELY GONE ON PCARS ,I HAVE THE SAME CPU AS U ,OC 4.3 AND USING PIPLAY JUST WAS REAL BAD ,JITTER AND GHOST …LOL ITS GONE !! TEXTURES AT LOW THOUGH , 20 CAR PRACTICE RACE WHTH F1AS LOL ITS GREAT,JUST ABOUT GAVE UP ON PIMAX BUT USING OC .08 JUST CHANGED THE GAME, NOW JUST TO GET NOLO FOR POSITONAL AND THIS WILL BE BETTER THAN OCULUS OR VIVE!!

Apologies, I am confused.

What version of piplay do you have? Do you have to close Piserver.exe for this? And do you have to remove Oculus 1.3 first? Can you still play all the games on the Oculus store?

Cheers. I’m gonna try it out.

Edit: Nothing works for me. I give up. I need Oculus 1.3 anyway.

ITLL work with the last 2 piplays , i would use oc .08 , oc home might work but ya u need to x out of piplay then have oc running and it will say DK2 connected then use steam vr and run in vive mode an ur off!!

PiPlay 1.1.92 works really well for visual quality little to no ghosting. However this version takes alot sometimes to get connected.

In 1.2.5x beta they are developing their own custom driver which will greatly reduce gpu load. However it still needs alot of work unless you have a powerful system like @Lukeb who was able to tweak his setup using nvidia dsr. I imagine once the Pimax team gets the kinks worked out should be awesome.

What gpu are you running?

fx 6300 oc 4.3 1070 this works, pimax driver is just bad , just no compaison with oc .08

Cool i am running amd 7950x2 cf.

1.1.92 worked great also supported gpu vr specifc optimizations (amd LiquidVR & Nvidia VRwerks)

I do have an r9 390 but think it doesn’t like my psu.

I have no oc on fx6300. On plus side with Am4 being out now you can buy the 8350 for under $200 canadian

@Sjef posted some great pics using VRmark. In 1.1.92 you can read the plaque quite well. In the 1.2x beta its not too clear

What mode do you set the Pimax to before closing Piplay, Video or Pimax?
And which version are you using? I am on 1.2.53, and I just get this warning: HMD Powered Off, Check HDMI Connection.

Cheers.

Could you make a video instruction on setting up and then I can not run steamvr on piMax in oculus 0.8 runtime

I could not start. Need a video instruction.

Why not just run Piplay v1.1.92 instead ? That version is using the Steam Compositor. Later versions use Pimax’s own compositor, which they’re doing to get more speed, but at it’s current implemention it’s nothing but a buggy alpha version that shouldn’t be used for gaming.

Also I may be misunderstanding something but what you’re doing doesn’t make much sense. Just shutting down the piplay.exe does nothing. Piplay.exe is just a front end to configure your headset, it’s not used for gaming. Piserver.exe, piservice.exe and piservicelauncher.exe (which keeps launching the service, which in turn launches the server) are the binaries that control the Pimax Steam driver. Shutting them down would make the pimax steam driver stop working.

In order to really remove Pimax from Steam, just remove the Pimax Steam DLL, cause this is the ‘interface’ into the server and the service.

Although, MAYBE, I’m thinking, if you shut down those binaries, then when steam detects the Pimax dll doesn’t function, that it will look for the oculus driver, so that might actually work, not sure, haven’t tested.

Also I haven’t tested what happens if you run 2 Steam drivers (oculus and pimax) for the same headset together, it might work I guess and just choose 1 of those 2, but I’m not sure.

Anyway, long story short: try to kill those 3 binaries in your task manager. If steam still works, then you know for sure it’s not using the Pimax driver (always first kill the service launcher, then the service, then the server, in that order, because the servicelauncher re-launches the service and the service re-launches the server)

But even then, I doubt the Oculus driver is better than pimax v1.1.92 ? Or am I missing something ?

I haven’t tried it. So can’t say better than 1.1.92 (probably not).

But reading his post; sounds like its good on the 1.2x betas as he reported better visuals & ghosting no where near as bad.

I can only speculate that with the headset set to PiMax mode; with Piservice closed the oculus 0.8 runtime sees it as Rift Dk2. With things being pretty busy probably won’t have time to test it this weekend.

That is exactly what I did, on Pimax and Video mode, and I couldn’t get it to work at all. We need some step by step guide.
I remember on old drivers that the Pimax was detected as a DK2, perhaps it is related to that?

But regardless, as far as I am aware, doing this means you have to delete OC Home, and lose access to the games there, so I am reluctant.

Edit:
Ok, so I got it working. I am not sure which of these steps you have to do, but this is what I did:

  1. Went back to 1.1.92, rebooted.
  2. Removed OC 1.3 (they conflict), rebooted.
  3. Installed OC 0.8 Runtime
  4. Closed Pilauncher.exe, piserver.exe and Piplay.
  5. Launched OC 0.8.

Then 0.8 Runtime says Oculus DKHD2 detected.

There is still ghosting though. I am not sure if it is really any better but I will test more. If this enables me to play Alien Isolation it’ll be worth it.

Edit 2:

This will come in very handy:

Somebody started using this method?

I tried it but I decided it was too much trouble. I prefer to have Oculus games working properly. If you have 0.8 installed you lose access to 1.3. The above gui didn’t work for me, I gave up.

can you supply exact instructions how to do this???
