that’s actually a good idea to get some insight for people what works best. Or to get insight about the callibration of the headsets, if the results are random. But then there is the distance to the lenses also, i use a 18mm facepad for example
that possibility crossed my mind also while writing my last comment
I have a real IPD of 72 mm and have modded the facepad to be 20 mm thick, but I have to set the IPD on the headset to 70 mm to feel the less eye strain (I still feel it, but this seems to be “the lesser evil”), even though by all the math, it should be exactly the opposite. With such a thick facepad I should actually set the larger IPD to compensate for the additional distance. It just does not make sense and I have no idea why.
yeah that’s weird. maybe the ipd dailer not giving the direct ipd? I don’t trust mine, it doesn’t feel tight.
The different facepads are also a mystery to me, some users have no problems with there eyelasses against the lenses and others need thick facepads to get rid of the distortions and eyerelief… I’m leaning more towards inconstistent callibration of the headsets
I’ve tried it again with another headset, the 5k XR, in this case the green vertical line is right in the center. So it must be the other 5k+ that has the screens or the lenses bad aligned.
This could be the cause of so many different perceptions of geometry, distortions and eyestrain, maybe some, or many headsets have the screens bad aligned.
I was thinking if RMA my 5k+ because of another beautiful crack it has, now I know I’ll have to.
This must be off by pretty big margin then .
On the 5k+ it’s displaced two squares to the left, I’ll try to render it
I too need the lens to be set at 2mm less than my actual ipd (67.5), the software ipd can then be changed to between 0 to +2 without much difference to comfort ,
I do have my eyes very close to the lens though just so my eyelashes miss the lens by a few mm
I think the differences in face shapes are partly to blame , some have high cheek bones , narrower faces , deeper eyes than others etc
Maybe pimax used an average Chinese face shape to set their ipd which like you said is harder than other hmd’s due to the canted diplay’s
Maybe the mechanical ipd adjuster can be moved or deformed slightly during assembly.
edit
but that would cause massive eye strain for some users so it’s unlikely
the green line is perfectly in the center on my display
One experiment. Everybody tried to see if they continue with eyestrain in small FOV?
I’m thinking about one thing… now that I corrected my IPD, I see that sometimes the exterior FOV was the problem. Then I focus only in the 100 interior degrees, and it feel as good as my Quest for instance.
I’m thinking that the “extra FOV” without varifocal screens produce this “eyestrain”.
But it can be “relaxed” if you adjust correctly the IPD.
And one more thing. I notice that my “Vr sense” affects my eyestrain. That is to say, if a think in my eyestrain, I have more and more. But if I focus in think that my View is real… my mind adjust to it and feel relaxed.
Think about that. There are a lot of people who have vision problems and their minds adjust their “vision” to see relaxed.
Sometimes I played for hours with my Pimax, and found that the IPD was move by my friend and is wrong. Then… only in this moment… I feel a lot of eyestrain hahaha.
That is to say, I’m thinking eyestrain is something mental. And yes… it’s mental hahaha that is the truth.
The screens are poorly aligned in my 5k+ replacement headset after RMA’ing the old one. I had to use +2 “Left” vertical offset to fix the double vision I was having. (No major issues with 1st headset) So it seems that my panels are not aligned vertically and are off by around 2 Pitool units.
PimaxUSA mentioned in another thread that they now have a step in the manufacturing process to detect panel misalignment with a digital tool. So, hopefully the panel alignment is better on newer units. Too bad Pimax isn’t RMA’ing misaligned units though…
Ouch, at least with vertical offset you can fix it, hopefully new units are all well aligned.
I think would be a good idea to implement horizontal offset adjustment per eye
When you increase the IPD offset does it look like the world is getting smaller ? I ask because I find the world scale in Skyrim VR too big, and it’s not immersive. But if I could make the world smaller then I might wanna play it, assuming it will be more immersive like that.
no if you increase the offset the scale gets bigger so you have to lower it, in my case the scale/depht was to small
@Heliosurge Can we add this thread to the pinned banner thread under possible fix for the eyestrain issue?
haha whut?
are you saying eyestrain can be a placebo effect?
I really think there might be variance in the headsets because I have a 70 ipd and have never felt eyestrain.
Or maybe i have and dont know it. How does eyestrain feel?
All i know is I returned Rift S because it felt like eyestrain for me, because the lenses cant line up.
Exactly, the stereopsis. Not everybody see the stereoscopic images equal. A person with strabismus can see in 3D for instance, but because his mind is accustomed to it. Your eyes + your brain = your sight.
That is to say, if you have eyestrain in some situation (virtual reality) and you force your sight a long period, then your brain get used to it and the eyestrain disappears.
Or you simply can “cheat” your sight to force your brain to understand it as “no strain” vision. I know it is possible. But requires training.
Hi,
Tried this yesterday. My measured IPD is 70.2 mm
I was never able to get a real clear picture with my Pimax5k+. The „best“ results when playing Xp11 were with the mechanical IPD adjustments at 64.3 mm and 0 (default) offset.
When performing the test I had to move the IPD offset to -8.5 to see the squares and the green line correctly. But then when back in the game (xp11), the view was completely out of focus.
Is my Pimax5k+ faulty?
I also use a Valve Index and there I move the mechanical IPD slider to 70mm and all is well. Why can’t I get this on my 5k+ ?
Thank you all for any advice!
