Brainwarp Software Progress?

It does not delay anything or add latency.

It makes one eye and sends it to be displayed without waiting for the other eye.

Where you got idea about adding latency?
Regular refresh rate is 90Hz so 11ms latency between 2 frames(90 FPS) Brainwarp just split that 11ms into 2 intervals lasting 5.5ms each, and in that 5.5ms show left image to left eye(and display) then right image to right eye while turning off left display. Read my example once again(T0-T3) :slight_smile: .

Perhaps yes, perhaps no… However, the possibility that Brainwarp does not actually currently exist is my gut feeling. Again, notice that no Pimax people have commented here even though it is a moderately active thread. I suspect that software is their weak point in the chain. It does not change my excitement for the HMD because all the positive reviews so far have been for prototypes running without Brainwarp. As for Brainwarp itself, I’m about ready to call bullshit until I see/hear otherwise.

I am quite sure you are right that they don’t have it yet.

But it doesn’t really matter, they can add it after the hardware ships.

+1. Also note, this is not pure software, because chip used must allow displays to refresh async so that part is actually hardware solution. I think this is similar to 3D effect in non-vr world, each eye gets different picture. Chip in specs does say it support 3D functions, from what I read before.
So via USB command just turn that functionality off or on, firmware layer on HMD. GPU nor OS doesn’t need to know about this. I think this trick will make framerate appear a bit smoother, but it’s not magic silver bullet for MTP problems, if HMD can’t reach ~90Hz.

I know them well and they do care immensely. These panels are purposed specifically for this type application.

The thing 3d is it users one screen so it makes sense to close one eye. Two screens this doesn’t make sense

I also call BS as they lied to tested face (ceo) about hz(apology about staff not knowing doesn’t make sense). This is another promise the world to get over the finish line.

Ok, maybe, it is backlight manipulation, but that is more thing of low persistence effect, to enable backlight to be off while pixels change state. Brainwarp is enabled by that, but mostly its firmware in the chip that do the logic(ANX7530).

SpecReader - there is a vast and I mean VAST amount of tuning these panels require. Their construction for each application is often quite unique in many ways. Everything from the materials and layers of the covering to reflectivity, coatings,layer adhesives, brightness ramp and fall, voltage ramp, backlight config (which is a science in it’s own right), panel driver config and a zillion other things. Once the panel is in the device it requires copious testing as there are all sorts of things that can go wrong. Your cavalier statement on this is just plain silly.

I am 99% sure they don’t test for Brainwarp cause it only require screen to have option to turn off display after 5.5ms(if target is 180Hz simulated). On hardware side, it is simple function, on firmware a bit more complicated, cause you need to delay signal to one of the displays etc etc. They don’t even claim to have Brainwarp working, and you are saying LCD is tuned for Brainwarp? :slight_smile:

I think you may not completely understand the concept of a kickstarter. This isn’t you buying a TV on amazon.com where the box says the specs. OF COURSE you expect the specs on the package of a product to be what it is. On a development project the invention process is involved and the point is to get something out that DOESN’T already exist.

In this case they are trying to push the envelope a numerous ways. It saddens me to see you bloviating about lies when the product doesn’t even exist yet as if this man is talking about something sitting on a shelf at Best Buy. When you build dozens of prototypes there are all sorts of variables and some of them will meet the specs in some aspects and some won’t. What he saw working in some lab may or may not be in that particular proto. Gimmie a break.

I was saying that this is an area they can expect manpower to test it and make many suggestions. The LCD maker our company purchases from (which I suspect is the same one) provided copious support to a degree where they literally sent engineers to our location and provided firmware test reports. Indeed changes to the panel were required on a lot of occasions where they determined improvements (many of which weren’t even directly related to the panel).

Understood. Now I get what Valve regarded as software was probably firmware close to LCD driver level. Thanks for explanation. I just expected panels to be off-the shelf ready for Brainwarp, maybe naive assumption, I am more a SW guy, and close to hardware things are not as perfect I guess.

Hassle factors for panel’s is really high, in fact for me it’s usually the most troublesome BOM component. I imagine Pimax will even have to worry about conformally coating those panel PCB’s due to all the moisture and sweat etc. which will be expensive (because of the extensive masking that surely will be required) and a whole can o worms of it’s own. They will also need standoffs to prevent the panels from moving from impacts etc… Even simple changes like those can cause unforeseen issues that require further firmware, software and design changes.

What the other user is referring to is called accommodation, and without lightfield displays it is not possible. However eye tracking could mimic it.

I do hope they address these things.

Now if you read what I posted and got your head out of the pimax campaign you will notice I wrote about what the ceo said to tested about what the prototype is. Not what the ceo promises in the Kickstarter. Tested asked if the current prototype was running at 90Hz, which the CEO(not some I’ll informed sales/tech person, as stated in apology letter) responded yes it is. Oh and it makes me happy to know your sadden.

The v2 prototype WAS running the panels at 90 Hz. It had two hdmi inputs and thus was more an pimax 4k hmd x2 from a tech point or more like a 8kx-prototype. So the hmd had two chips to receive two 4k signals (in reality 2x 2560 x1440 max, but i simplified) from the pc.

Only with the v3 came the problem of not reaching 90Hz. Because they switched the hardware to one DP connection now there is only one chip receiving and sending to two scaler chips (i guess here, one per panel). So this receiving chip now has to deliver double bandwitdh. And this is causing the problem not reaching 90Hz reliably.

So the CEO was not lying about the v2 doing 90Hz.

Another question is if they really could deliver the 90Fps stable while running off the laptop. And i think it is save to say that this was not always the case :wink:
