Backer in the 3000s upgrades himself in eager anticipation of 8K

Hello all, first time posting on this forum, just wanted to share a part of my story; I was considering buying a VR headset back during the ‘end phase’ of the kickstarter, and seeing that the prices still hadn’t come down for the ‘first gen’ headsets by HTC and Oculus, I stumbled on a post on the frontier forums (Elite Dangerous) about the Pimax 8k, with a link to the kickstarter. I hadn’t kickstarted anything before and thought to myself that the for the price, about the same as buying a Vive, that this product would be awesome. On checking that the company had some experience at least with manufacturing previous headsets, I decided to back the product.

I decided in the intrim to also keep an eye on graphics cards to upgrade, and when a new graphics card appeared on amazon at significantly reduced price, I snapped that up, in order to ensure my computer was as ready as I could afford.

Roll on a few months later, and it occurred to me that due to wearing glasses (which I have worn since childhood - probably over 25 years but to be honest I can’t remember how long ago I first wore glasses) I would be restricted to clarity in the ~100 degree field of view provided by my glasses, and so decided, despite years of saying that I didn’t want to, that it was time to try contact lenses.

So now when the Pimax does come, I have upgraded myself in eager anticipation. If absolutely nothing else, Pimax have helped me overcome a phobia (perhaps that is too strong a phrasing?) about contacts, giving myself clear vision in my full field of view.

LOL, nice one

I wondered what on earth you meant by the title!

Very nice! Welcome to Pimax forums! I have upgraded your account by 1 level for ease. The system typically auto upgrades user levels as ypu learn forum features (quoting, posting links etc)

So the question is if you don’t mind. What are your system specs? :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-5820K CPU @ 3.30GHz (12 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

The processor is running at stock speeds, but is water cooled, so could be overclocked, and is one of the candidates for next upgrade, otherwise it would be RAM.

Awesome setup. For the time being 16g ram should be sufficient to plenty. Depending of course on application.

Does your i7 have turbo clock? If so depending on program may not need an overclock.

I also joined the Kickstarter specifically for playing Elite Dangerous. I had been considering Vive and the Pimax 4K, based on some of the discussions in the FD VR forum. I was leaning towards the 4K, since higher res appealed to me and it seemed like Pimax was doing a good job at fixing the tracking issues in their software.

When someone mentioned the 8K Kickstarter in those forums, I jumped in with a pledge for the 5K. After a few weeks, I decided to upgrade my pledge to the 8K.

While many backers are getting quite impatient, I’m anticipating the release of the NVidia 1180 Ti, which should work well with the 8K.

Neil with your experience how does his processor fair for ED? Without oc says turbo of 3.6

I think he will be fine. I sure hope so, since my system is fairly similar (except for my 980Ti GPU).

I have an Intel i7-4770 @ 3.4 GHz with 16 GB RAM. He has 12 CPU threads to my 8, so his system should be faster than mine, for modern games. His 1080Ti should be fairly good in VR in Elite Dangerous, as long as he sets the graphics settings appropriately.

Awesome picked up an i7 4770 but think the 97 board i have might be no good.

My main vr system atm is an i5 6500 16gig with an r9 390 8gig(know this gpu will need to be updated but may fair okay at medium -maybe lol)

Upgraded recently myself and hopefully it will be enough to decently run the 8K, when it finally arrives, as I am backer # 6000+

i7-8700k
16gb ddr4 @3000mhz
GTX-1070

Looks nice! Gpu is within spec & would be stronger than the laptop’s 1070. Of course when closer to min rec spec will depend on the game. I would guess med to hi settings. ED I would guess med settings with the 5k/8k.

But there are a few ED gamers who would have a better idea based on their current vr headsets. @Enopho has a 1080 ti Aorus card with the 4k model.

yes but will they actually be able to pull off the mysterious brainwarp, because even with a decent system I would think you might struggle without it on the 8K…and I’m a graphics whore so I cringe when I have to tone back the settings ha.

The 8k should not have any additional hardware requirements than existing VR headsets. The GPU pushes your chosen resolution and the 8k internally upscales that. So what your CPU and GPU push in game is not impacted

interesting ok…if true, sounds ideal.

Cool! I’ve got myself a pick-list on AMZN for a whole new PC build if my current one does not work out. I think my current PC is borderline for the 8k

Core-I7 3770k overclocked to 4.4Ghz. 16GB RAM, Nvidia 1080/8gig, ASRock z77 Extreme4 mobo and 4x512GB SSDs in RAID0 stripe

if not then I would move to a Core i7-8700k on an ASUS ROG Maximus Code-X motherboard with 16GB RAM, hopefully being able to keep my current graphics card.

Are you liquid cooling your current system?

Yes I am, and I will be liquid cooling the new one as well. - Tested it with Prime95 and it’s solid as a rock

Yea I’m liquid cooling my 8700k and at some point down the road will probably do the same; over-clock that is. But as much as I like the Frankenstonian-lab look of those over the top liquid builds with piping and bubblng witch cauldruns …I’ll keep it conservative myself.

Actually my current case is very minimal and conservative, its basically a black box and there isn’t really a window into what is on the inside at all. Antek Three Hundred Two ATX case. Those are pretty cheap on NewEgg Now compared to when I got mine

I was toying with tricking the new one out a little more with a Cosair Crystal glass and LED case - let’s see.

Avoid sleeping with your contacts in, it can really rough up your eyes. Once in a while I forget. Contacts are great compared to glasses, but I feel like my eyes need a break from them every now and then.
